The pantry door smashed inwards with a deafening crack. Myla jerked backward, heart slamming into her throat as her eyes darted around, scanning the narrow space. Flour bags, jars of preserved foodstuffs, crates of bottled water…. Then a small pair of scissors meant for cutting open packaging and sacks caught her eye.

A man stepped through the jagged frame. His face was unrecognizable because the dim kitchen light behind him shadowed it, his shoulders broad enough to block half the doorway.

“I’m here for you, Rosie,” He said in a low, strange whisper. It was as if he were talking to someone he was familiar with that has been waiting for him to come.

Myla’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Who the hell is Rosie? What do you want?!”

She quickly turned and snatched up the scissors, hiding them in her fist.

Before she could blink, the man moved faster than she anticipated for his size and wrapped a strong arm around her waist, trapping her arms to her body while the other went over her mo

“Someone get me a first aid kit.” Jared barked out as he lowered her unto the couch in one of the smaller sitting rooms. One of the two guards hovering around ran to get it. Jared turned back to her, face guant with worry as he scanned her. His hands fluttered uncertainly like he didn't know where to touch. She winced when he finally lifted her injured ankle unto a cushion. “The blood isn't mine all I have are few bruises and the ankle. I’m fine, Jay.”“No, you are not.” He said as he crouched in front of her, jaw tight, checking the swelling. His hands were steady on her leg, but when she reached for one to comfort him, she felt the tremor running through him.Myla went still, staring at him. “You are shaking,” she whispered in surprise.Normally, Jared was the most unflappable among the three best friends for as long as she has known them. He avoided her gaze but didn’t deny it. Just swallowed hard, eyes still scanning the bruises on her arms, the scrape along her shoulder. The g

“MYLA!” Jared’s voice roared through the house, rough with fear.He barreled into the kitchen, gun raised. His eyes spotted the splintered pantry door hanging off one hinge and his fear doubled.“Myla?” He called out again, heart pounding but no one answered. The kitchen was empty. He saw something gleaming in the pantry floor. He went to check it and saw it was her phoneHis heart slammed harder. He rushed out of the kitchen, and down the hall. As he he got to the mid point of the main hall, he paused not knowing if he should branch into the eastern hall, go straight ahead to the sitting rooms and library or go down the western hall. This was why he hated huge houses. Too many damned corridors and corners. The house was already lit up. All the guards heard his warning shot and scrambled to action. Soon men swarmed around him.He turned to the closest ones. "The lady of the house have been taken. Right under our fucking noses."Their eyes widen in shock, they stared at him speechles

That night, the guards swept the grounds and house twice at Jared's insistence. Jared still cross checked the entire mansion, then checked on Myla. He smiled softly when saw her already sleeping. Then he went to his room.He laid awake in the dim room, sleep refusing to come no matter how much he tried. Counting sheep didn't work, neither did trying different lying positions Staring at the ceiling, his mind flashed to day's events. In as much as he liked how successful Hayden became, he never envied him. Being known by so many and always in the public eye was not something he could enjoy or endure because people were.... people. Over the years he had watched the way the media had always found a way to turn everything little thing and mistake Hayden did into a scandal. From him making his company public to his dating life to his marriage to Myla then his accident. They always had something negative to say. He won't say he blamed them too much because he understood that negatively w

“Myla, you don’t have to do this,” Jared said, jaw tight as he looked at her adjust her blouse.“Yes, I have to, Jay.” She said as she smoothed the black blazer over her hips, chin high, eyes blazing in anger. “Just because of the rumor they have been dragging him through the mud like he hasn’t built everything they are feeding off. Like he is already dead. If they don't make any statement they will keep thinking so." Outside the estate gates, reporters were gathered like sharks circling blood. They have been there since the previous day. The news had changed from Hayden being dead to him being in a vegetative state after one of the EMTs that came with the ambulance had leaked a picture of Hayden unconscious and strapped to the stretcher. The culprit would be dealt with once they had his identity.Cameras started flashing through the iron bars, microphones raised like weapons immediately they saw Myla approaching. The guards hesitated when she reached the gate. Jared swore under hi

“You people must be out of your goddamn minds?!” Hayden thundered, voice an angry snarl. On the tablet propped up on the bed stool, six faces of the Oakley Corp's board members blinked back at him from their different pristine offices, all in expensive corporate outfits and neutral expressions.“Mr Oakley,” the chairman began carefully, “you have to understand the position we are in. The markets, the stocks, even the shareholders are reacting to the news...”“You mean the fake news,” Hayden snapped, heat rising under his skin. “Some jackass leaks one bullshit story about my death, and suddenly you are all ready to toss me aside like I’m dead already? I told you, it was just a minor incident, and the police are on it already. I am fine.”A woman in a sharp blazer cleared her throat. “You are blowing this out of proportion. It isn’t about tossing you aside, Mr Oakley. It is about stabilizing the company. Investors want reassurance.”“This is a good thing for you, too, sir.” Another man
