“Let me make sure I got this straight,” Sheriff Ben Whittaker said in disbelief, his voice almost sarcastic. “There was a break-in attempt at your house, security system was hacked multiple times, now the wheelchair ramp sabotaged and none of you…” He jabbed a finger at Jared, Beck, then Hayden, “…thought to call the damn police until now?” He let out a dry chuckle. “Wait, you didn't even call us; it was the hospital. What on earth are you guys about??”

Hayden’s jaw flexed. “We were handling it.”

“You call this handling it?” Detective Carolanne Higgins’s tone could’ve cut glass. She leaned back in the chair across from Hayden’s hospital bed, arms crossed, one brow arched high. “Sir, respectfully, you’ve been the victim of at least two felonies and this attempted murder, and you thought what? You could muscle through it on your own?

Hayden sat propped against the pillows, face tight, jaw clenched. He stared at the detectives with flat eyes. “This is being blown way out of proportion.”

Beck escorted Myla to the restroom and while he waited outside for her, Jared came to join him.He leaned on the wall next to Beck, then patted him on shoulder when he saw the silent anger on his face. Beck raked a hand through his hair staring at the door of the restroom Myla disappeared through. “He doesn’t get to do that,” he hissed out. “He doesn’t get to shut her out and torch everything in the process.”Jared folded his arms and sighed. “He’s scared, B.”“Of what? Her?” Beck’s laugh was bitter. “We nearly lost him last night, Jay. You think he gets to pick and choose who gives a damn?”“Drop it,” Jared said finally, though his jaw flexed. “You know Hayden’s… complicated.”“No,” Beck shot back. “Hayden’s an ass.”"He needs to out grow this childish behaviour of his. He can't always become an asshole just because things turn south a little bit."Before Jared could reply, Detective Whittaker reappeared. “Got a minute?” he asked them."You go with him and hear what he has

The steady beep of the monitors clawed at Myla’s nerves. It reminded her of memories she wished she could forget.Hayden lay still on the hospital bed, pale. She hadn’t moved from the chair beside him all night. Her fingers were cold where they clutched the thin blanket at his waist, as if her grip alone could keep him tethered here.Sunlight finally slid across the room, harsh and pale against the sterile walls. She shifted forward on the seat when she saw his lashes tremble, his brow twitch faintly.“Hayden?” Her voice cracked on his name. His eyes blinked open slowly, unfocused at first, clearer as his gaze landed on her.“You’re awake,” she whispered, reaching quickly for his hand. But he pulled it away before her fingers could wrap around his.Her chest caved in. “Hayden, I—”“I’m fine,” he rasped. She swallowed. “I stayed with you all night. I just wanted—”“I said I’m fine!” He snapped. She sat back slowly, her throat tightening with the rejection as she nodded. With them in t

Hayden pushed open the back doors. He could hear Myla's voice call for him, but he couldn't stop or go back there. He knew he had messed up, but right now he just couldn't regulate his emotions enough to be apologetic. The doctor's words echoed in his ears again: "I think you should try to get used to the way life is now...."He felt his chest burn as he pushed back the sadness trying to crawl its way up his throat. They were telling him to prepare to get used to being useless. His wife and best friends kept repeating how much they love him, no matter his physical conditions, but how long can that feeling last? How long can they endure a man with noodles for legs and a cock that doesn't work?Soon they will find solace in themselves... and God knows that he had no problem with that. Hell, just thinking about it was the hottest thing he could ever envision, but deep down, the fear that when they do, they will realize they don't need him... that they are happy without the cripple draggi

Myla was running, her bare feet slapping against endless ground. She was trying to reach Hayden who was far ahead of her, his chair sinking into the earth as though it had turned to quicksand. He wasn’t panicking or calling out for help, he just silently stared at her, his hazel eyes locked on hers as the ground devoured him.“Hayden!” She screamed in panic. She pushed harder, arms pumping, calves burning trying to reach him but no matter how hard she tried, the space between them never reduced. Every step slid her back, like she was running on a thread mill.He sank another inch into the sand. His mouth moved silently calling out her name.“No!” she cried, her throat raw. “I’m coming, Hay! Hold on!”She pushed harder, legs burning, but every step seemed to drag her back, every breath thinner, her scream breaking against the vast silence. “Myla.” His lips formed her name as the earth swallowed him whole.“No!”She woke up mid scream, her nightgown damp against her skin, heart slammin

For the past few days, a certain dark heaviness had hung in the house that Beck couldn’t shake. Myla moved through the halls like a shadow, quieter than usual, her smiles softer, weaker, like they took effort. And Hayden—fuck, Hayden hadn’t been himself at all since the alarm had gone off that night. Sure, he was present, but it was the presence of a phantom. He was there but with no substance…. withdrawn in a way that scraped Beck raw.Beck hated silence, hated unresolved tension even more…. not that he even understood what the dark tension was all about. So when he walked into the kitchen that morning and found Myla measuring coffee into the machine, he slipped playfully behind her, hugged her and leaned his head n her shoulder. “Sweetheart,” he drawled against her ear. “If you keep frowning at coffee beans like that, you’ll scare the bitterness and caffeine out of them.”She turned and gave him a quick, almost polite half-smile then went back to her task.Beck frowned, then pres
