Eight hours. It has been eight hours since I burdened Yui with the task of finding William, and we still have nothing.

Not a clue of where this man lived. I lay sprawled on the sofa in my office, my arm draped over my eyes.

On the coffee table before me, three empty blood bags lay crumpled up. By this time of night, I should have been at some exclusive underground lounge, feeding off anyone willing enough to give.

Instead, I was here, rotting in my own mess.

The soft click of the door lock as Yui walked in was enough to tell all I needed to know. She had nothing new.

She sat on the love seat opposite me, her presence a familiar, grounding weight that I currently wanted to scream at.

The silence between us was heavy, vibrating with the ticking of the clock in my head.

"Maybe you should just sign it," Yui whispered. Her voice was cautious.

I stayed perfectly still, not even breathing for ten seconds. The only sound in the room came from her. "Astrid?" she prompted.

"How about I just kill them?" I asked, my voice muffled by my sleeve. "I go to the A.S.A. headquarters tonight. And tear the throat out of every agent in the building."

"Be reasonable," Yui sighed, "You kill one agent, and you prove every fear the government has about your kind. It won't just be a scandal, Astrid. It’ll be a full out war. Everything you’ve built, gone in twenty-four hours."

Everything I had built was not going to entirely be mine if I signed that document. I sat up abruptly, and glared at her, my eyes burning. "So that's your brilliant advice? I should just roll over? I should hand my life over to a werewolf who thinks he can own me?"

"Yes," Yui said, her gaze steady and unflinching. "For the time being."

I stared at her, incredulous. "You’ve lost your mind."

"Think about it," Yui leaned forward, her hands clasped tight. "If you sign, the blackmail stops. The A.S.A. leaves you alone because William clears your name. And more importantly, the contract requires you to live together. To be in the same house. To share a life."

She paused, and I caught a dark glint in her eyes. "It is a lot easier to kill a man when you’re sleeping in the room next to him, Astrid. You can’t find him now because he’s hiding. Marriage brings him into your space. You just play the part, find his weakness, and then you end him."

I laughed at her words, "That is the most terrible plan you have ever had in your entire life, Yui. It’s pathetic and desperate."

"It’s the only card left on the table," Yui muttered, "Sign the paper, Astrid or get ready to run for the rest of your life."

"No," I said, my voice echoing in the silent office. I sat up straighter, my nails digging into the sofa. "I am not doing it."

I refuse to lose to him, not after the way he spoke down to me. He was underneath me and I would show him just who he messed with.

Yui stood up, walked across the room to my desk, and picked up the heavy folder. She grabbed a fountain pen from the stand and marched back to me.

She pushed the empty, crumpled blood bags off the coffee table with one hand, sending them tumbling to the floor. Then Yui slammed the contract down in the cleared space and shoved the pen into my hand, forcing my fingers to curl around it.

"I am not going to sit here and watch your pride be your downfall," she muttered, her voice trembling with anger. "You have lost the battle, Astrid. He caught you and outplayed you. Accept it, and plan your next move."

"He doesn't want a partner, Yui. He wants an asset," I hissed, looking down at the pen. "He needs my money and my name to wash the filth off his pack. Who’s to say he won't just put a silver bullet in my head the second the merger is finalized? I’d be worth more to him dead and inherited than alive."

But Yui just shook her head. "He needs you," Yui countered, leaning over me, her hands flat on the table. "He needs your influence. You can't influence anything if you're dead. He’s a manipulator, Astrid. He needs his puppet to stay intact to pull the strings."

"I am nobody's puppet." I dropped the pen and watched it roll across the table, stopping just short of the edge. "I’m not signing it."

Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating. Yui stared at me for a long beat. Her eyes weren't angry anymore; they were cold.

"Fine," she said quietly. "Then I’ll start packing my things. I’ll make sure to leave before the A.S.A. arrives tomorrow."

She headed toward the door but stopped just before she opened it and looked over her shoulder. "Is this what you want? Are you so desperate to be studied and dissected on a metal table by the A.S.A.? Because that is exactly what is going to happen. You’ll be nothing more than a science project."

The door clicked shut behind her and I was finally alone. The silence in the office felt like it was crushing against me. I stared down at the white pages of the contract, the text blurring and for the first time since my father died, I felt the walls closing in on me.

I felt trapped, small and vulnerable, like the girl who used to hide in the library while her mother screamed in the next room.

I hated William Winchester. I hated the way he smelled, the way he moved, and the way he had dismantled my life in a single night.

My teeth sunk into my lower lip, drawing my own blood. I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I snatched the pen off the table. I didn't read the clauses again.

I simply flipped to the final page and scrawled my signature across the line.

It was done. I had just traded my soul for my empire. I slumped back against the sofa, the pen falling from my hand as I stared at my name on the paper.

I was officially the enemy’s property.

I woke up with a heavy, dragging sensation throughout my limbs, realizing immediately that my wrists and ankles had been chained to the floor.A dull ache throbbed behind my eyes, and when I tried to push my senses outward, I hit a wall; the room was specifically equipped with technology designed to completely dampen my abilities. My eyes locked onto Allaston, who was standing directly on the opposite side of a thick glass wall that separated my cell from the rest of the room. A wide, permanent smile was plastered across his face. His unmoving expression thoroughly unsettled me. Does he ever stop smiling? I thought to myself, keeping my face blank to hide my growing unease.Allaston stepped closer to the transparent barrier, and spoke through an intercom system, his voice clear and smug. "My noble prize," he also purred."The perfect weapon for me to use against William."I frowned deeply at him, did he really think William would give up his position for me? Thqis man couldn't be as

I forced myself to hold William's stare. Tilting my chin upward, and directing my full focus into our shared link. I thought of all the ways I could have killed him. I visualized every single detailed step, running through the thought of tearing through his arteries and draining him.William’s small smile vanished instantly. His fingers shot out, wrapping tightly around my neck as he yanked my body upward until my toes barely brushed the floor, pulling my face inches from his.His dark green irises flared into a bright gold, still I held my ground, keeping my eyes locked on him as I replayed one particular scene over and over in my mind: a clear, vivid fantasy of decapitating him in the most shameful, public manner possible. The grip around my throat grew tighter, threatening to cut off my breathing entirely. But just before either of us could say a word or push each other further, a loud, piercing alarm shattered the quiet night air. Both our heads snapped in the direction of the s

I woke with a gasp, my chest heaving and cold sweat running down my back. I blinked a few times as my vision slowly came into focus, revealing the high ceilings and familiar layout of William’s master bedroom at his pack house. I was back in his bed.Instinctively, I lifted my right hand to my mouth, running the pads of my fingers over the sharp points of my fangs. A long, shaky breath escaped my lips when I found them still fully intact.Unlike the final moments I remembered of Rowena’s cabin, the agonizing, starvation pain no longer consumed my body. I was still hungry, but the intense burning in my stomach had diminished into a dull, manageable ache deep within my bones. The alarm clock on the nightstand read 3:40 AM, and William was sleeping shirtless beside me.My eyebrows drew together in a frown as I stared at his relaxed features. "What the fuck did you do?" I whispered to m

The silence in the room became so loud that I could practically track the frantic calculations running through William’s mind. His jaw locked with such immense pressure that I genuinely wondered how his teeth had not shattered from the sheer force of his bite."That…is not a fair trade," William said, his voice flat and dangerously quiet.Rowena did not blink. "Nothing in life is fair, William, you know this. A bond for a bond. You must give up your other half if you wish to be entirely free of hers." She leaned forward, resting her palms on the low table. "I must warn you, this separation has an incredibly low success rate. And I have personally watched powerful men go entirely mad from losing their wolf."William’s breathing remained shallow. "Is there nothing else that can be done? Because my wolf is entirely out of the question."Rowena remained silent in thought for a very lon

After William’s phone call ended, he came back downstairs and forcefully grabbed my arm, dragging me up the stairs so we could both get dressed in clean clothes. Within ten minutes, we had left his ruined living room. For the first time since I had known him, William was the one driving us. His large hands clutched the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned a bloodless white, his jaw locked in a tight line. He had not looked at me a single time since we climbed into the black SUV.I kept my eyes fixed on the passenger window, monitoring our surroundings. At first, I assumed we were driving back into the city. But as the minutes ticked by, the denser the forest became, to the point where the thick canopy blocked out any form of light, plunging everything in darkness.Anxiety began to tighten in my chest as William abruptly swung the steering wheel, turning off into an unpaved dirt road.

"William!" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat in a state of absolute fear and terror. The wood came down with tremendous force. The sharp point pierced directly through the fabric of my robe, slicing through the outer layers of skin and muscle on my chest. But the moment the wood broke my skin, William froze completely above me. He clutched the makeshift stake tightly with both hands, his knuckles turning white as his arms locked."William," I whispered this time, the word trailing off into a breathless plea as a thick stream of blood slipped from the corner of my mouth.Above me, William suddenly gasped, letting out a choked sound and coughed, blood pouring down his chin.He frowned and got off me but stumbled slightly, his balance faltering as he stared down the matching, identical puncture wound manifested directly in the center of his chest identical to
