The SUV tore down the dark highway, the engine growling like a beast. Inside, no one spoke at first, the silence heavy with dread. Finally, Cruz broke it.

“Where is he, Viper?”

Viper drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. “You don’t just ask where Ghost is. He finds you.”

“Not good enough,” Cruz snapped. “I need specifics.”

Viper smirked. “You always this bossy when your back’s against the wall?”

“Answer the damn question.”

Blade leaned forward from the back seat, his voice edged with steel. “Quit playing games, Viper. If you know something, say it.”

“Relax, big guy,” Viper said lazily. “I’ve got a lead. Word on the street is Ghost’s been squatting in an old steel mill on the east side. Quiet, out of the way. Perfect place to stash a prize.”

My stomach knotted. “A prize? You mean my daughter.”

Viper glanced at me in the rearview mirror. “That’s exactly what I mean.”

Cruz’s jaw flexed. “If he touches her—”

“He will,” Viper cut him off flatly. “That’s what Ghost does. He breaks peop

The chamber echoed with the heavy slam of metal doors locking behind us. Cruz tightened his grip on our daughter, holding her so close I thought he might break in half if anyone tried to pull her away. Across the wide floor, Ghost stood still, surrounded by armed men. His voice cut through the silence, coldly.“You’ve come far, Cruz. Further than I expected.”“Cut the speeches,” Cruz growled, his jaw hard. “You want me? Here I am.”Ghost tilted his head slightly. “Bold. But I don’t just want you.” His masked face shifted toward the small bundle in Cruz’s arms. “I want her.”“Over my dead body,” I snapped before I could stop myself.“That,” Ghost replied smoothly, “can be arranged.”Cruz’s muscles tensed. His arms tightened protectively around our daughter. “If you touch her, I swear—”“You’ll what?” Ghost cut him off, amusement lacing his words. “Kill me? You’ve tried before.”Blade stepped forward, with a knife glinting under the dim light. “Then maybe this time he won’t miss.”Insta

The walls shook, dust raining down.Cruz pulled us tight against him, shouting over the rumble. “Stay down! Don’t move!”Blade’s voice cut through the dark. “We’ve gotta move, now!”“I’ve got her!” Cruz barked, clutching our daughter. “Clear us a way out!”The child whimpered, “Daddy—what’s happening?”“Shh, baby,” Cruz whispered into her hair. “It’s just noise. I’ve got you.”Another explosion boomed closer.Viper laughed like a madman. “Oh, Ghost outdid himself this time. He wants to bury us alive.”“Shut up and help!” I screamed.“Fine,” Viper drawled, kicking debris aside. “This way—if the roof doesn’t fall first.”Blade’s tone was sharp. “We don’t follow him blindly.”Cruz snapped, “We don’t have time to argue!”“Exactly,” Viper said smugly. “Trust me or stay here and roast.”I grabbed Cruz’s arm. “We have to try something. We can’t stay.”Cruz’s eyes burned in the flickering emergency lights. He nodded. “Blade—watch our backs. Nova—stay close.”I tightened my grip on his jacket.

The world outside was chaos—sirens wailing in the distance, engines roaring, shouts breaking the night. Inside the ruined warehouse, the tension was a vice around my throat.Cruz’s hand was still bloody when he grabbed mine.“Nova, you don’t flinch. You hear me? Not once.” His voice was ragged but sharp.“I’m not leaving you behind again,” I shot back, with my fingers digging into his. “Not now, not ever.”Blade shoved open a side door, gun raised. “We don’t have time for speeches. They’re circling us. We’ve got one way out, and it’s through them.”Viper barked a laugh that held no humor. “One way out? Kid, you better start praying, because there’s an army out there waiting to skin us alive.”“Then we cut through them,” Cruz growled, struggling to his feet. His jaw clenched against the pain, but his eyes were blazing. “No one touches my family and walks away.”I stepped in front of him, my palms pressed against his chest. “You’re bleeding everywhere. You can barely stand.”His gaze lo

The water slammed into us, tearing Cruz from my arms.“No!” I screamed, choking on the current. “Cruz! Don’t you dare!”My hands clawed through the freezing torrent, grasping for him. My fingers brushed his jacket, slipping once—then caught fabric. I pulled with everything in me.“Don’t close your eyes! Stay awake, damn it!”His head lolled. His lips were blue.“Cruz, please! Talk to me!”Nothing. The river spun us into a whirlpool, smashing my shoulder against stone. Pain ripped through me, but I refused to let go. “You promised me! You promised we’d get out together! Don’t you break it now!”A rough hand seized my arm. Viper, half-submerged, teeth bared against the current.“Hold him up!” he barked. “Keep his mouth above water!”“I’m trying!” I gasped, spitting river water. “He’s not—he’s not breathing!”“Then make him!”“How?!”“Breathe for him!”I pressed my mouth to Cruz’s, forcing air into his lungs even as the river dragged us under again. My tears mixed with the water, my ches

“Nova! Nova, wake up!” Blade’s voice shaking me back into reality. My eyes fluttered open to chaos. The truck was on its side, smoke filling the air, gunfire still rattling outside. Cruz lay beside me, blood soaking through his shirt faster than before.“Blade…” My throat was dry. “Cruz—he’s not moving!”Blade’s hands were already pressing down hard on the wound. “He’s alive, but barely. We need to move—now!”“What about the shooters?!” I cried.“They’re everywhere,” one of Viper’s men shouted from the front, pulling himself out of the wreckage. “We’re boxed in!”“Then fight our way out!” Blade snarled, yanking his gun free.Viper crawled from the other side, blood streaking down his forehead, but his eyes were sharp. “They knew we were coming. This was no accident.”“You think?” Blade snapped. “Save the analysis for later—we’ve got Cruz bleeding out in my sister’s lap!”Viper’s gaze landed on me, cold and cutting. “You want him alive? Then listen to me.”I tightened my hold on Cruz.
