I bit my lips nervously. The last time I visited my father at the hospital, I came with Nate and we discussed marriage. My parents never stopped telling me how proud they were. My life was perfect just how they wanted. I had a good job and a man that adored me. They love Nate. They trusted Nate. Now, walking into the hospital, a lot has changed. I wasn’t the perfect daughter anymore. I was known as a home wrecker and I was visiting with a different man, a man I knew my mother wasn’t going to approve of. A man whose name has been dragged through gossip with mine.

He had a lot of tattoos, he smoked and he caused a lot of chaos. He was the exact man my mom warned me of in my teenage years.

“You don’t have to come with me. You can wait in the car,” I said to Zac

He was acting like someone was going to snatch me if he left my side.

“I want to,” he insisted. “And your parents are lovely people.”

I can’t believe Zac’s charm worked on my parents. What did he say to them?

“I think you

Zac shut the door and leaned against it. His wet hair dripped onto the floor, but he didn’t move. He looked worried. Was this the big secret he was hiding from me? Why did he care about me and my family?“Jane, I need to explain some things to you.”“No!” I clutched it tighter against my chest. “You’ve been avoiding me for days, and now I know why. All these years, why did your father help me? Why did you help me?” I almost choked on my own tears. “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”He ran a hand through his damp hair, frustrated.“Because you weren’t supposed to know,” he said quietly. “Your father worked for mine, and he could see that your family was struggling. They weren’t close friends, but my father was very fond of yours. He knew if he offered him help, he'd reject it, so he had to go about it secretly.”“That is not good enough!” I snapped. “Why me? Why would your father care about some random family? This is a lot of money to spend on someone you aren’t even related to. Aft

The next few days were quiet. Zac moved like a ghost in his own home. I barely saw him and when I did, he didn’t say much to me. He gave me updates about my father’s health. A specialist was flying into come see him, he made arrangements for me to see my father whenever I pleased, and I was thankful for that.He shielded my family from the media, and he had security with them round the clock. I finally spoke to mama. She wasn’t upset, she was just tired from looking after my father and running the family business. Just like papa, she said he liked Zac, and he had been nice to them. She also mentioned that Mrs Gonzales had been in contact with her, and she was willing to offer any assistance that she needed.I was shocked by the kindness he and his mother showed my family. It was rather strange that he was pulling strings behind my back, but he avoided me like a plague.I had just finished yoga when I walked into my room and found a pile of books on my table. They were limited editions

I barely had enough time to collect my thoughts after Rosa left when my phone rang. It was Nate. My heart skipped a beat. I watched it ring for a second time before answering it. “Hello?” My voice was low, quiet. I had been through a lot already, I didn’t know if he called to add weight to my pains or if he wanted to hear me out. “Jane, are you okay?” He askedHe wasn’t angry, he sounded concerned. My heart warmed as I heard him say my name. I missed him so much. “I know we aren’t in the best place right now but I watched a video of you and Olivia at a restaurant. I’m worried about you.”I wanted to tell him everything that happened. I wanted him to know that I didn’t cheat and I was only caught up in something I had no business in but the words got stuck in my throat. For weeks, I waited by the phone hoping he’d call me. Hoping he’d be the only one to stand by me while others mocked me but he turned his back on me. I understand his anger but the fact that he believed what peopl

I hadn’t seen Zac in twenty-four hours, not that I was counting, but I thought about him a lot. The conversation we had that night was the most we’ve ever said to each other. I wanted more of it even though it was dangerous. My feelings for Nate were still strong, and I hoped his anger would fade away soon, and we'd be back to normal. As expected, blogs were posting about Olivia's live stream. She was the poor girl who had to pay the price for loving someone as if she didn’t try to kill me after her performance.I was in Zac’s library going through some books when I heard some voices. I dropped my book and stepped into the hallway,Zac stood by the living room window, broad shoulders tense, and next to him was a woman. Elegant. Mid-fifties, maybe. Her hair was pulled back into a low bun, her posture impeccable just like Zac’s. She noticed me first.“Oh! You must be Jane.” She lit up as if she’d been waiting to meet me all her life. “Come here, sweetheart.”I blinked. Sweetheart?B

Zac led me to the garden, a first aid box in one hand, a cup of spearmint tea in the other hand. On our way home, he noticed a small cut on my hand, and he was determined to clean it up. I had to admit that I liked the way he doted on me. It was all going to end when he was done sorting things out, but for now I was going to enjoy it. My mind drifted to what papa said. I would have to choose one. With Zac, I felt a million sparks and I felt alive, but he didn’t feel the same way I felt. His love was going to be like fire, it would warm me and it would also burn me. There was Nathan whose love was peaceful. We never argued and my future with him was going to be a peaceful one. “My father told me you visited him regularly,” I said to him as we sat down on the bench in the middle of the garden. “We have a friendship if I do say so myself.”He smiled. It was the tiniest smile but it was something. I wondered what he would look like when he smiled fully. “Zac Gonzales, what did you do
