The command echoed through the holding lounge like thunder, dropping an immediate, suffocating silence over the room.

The two guards in obsidian armor didn't move an inch. Their faces were hidden behind terrifying, steel-slitted helmets, their iron spears grounded firm against the polished marble floor.

"Summoned?" Isabelle breathed, her jaw practically dropping to her chest. She looked between the guards and Aria, her eyes wide with frantic, rising panic. "By the High Throne? Why would the Lycan King want her?"

Alpha Kieran stepped forward, his posture rigid as he tried to project Alpha authority despite the sweat glistening on his temples. "There must be a mistake. I am Alpha Kieran of the Crescent Crest Pack. This female was recently severed from our pack structure. If there is a legal matter or an infraction regarding her presence at the Citadel—"

"There is no mistake," the lead guard cut in, his voice cold, heavy, and metallic. "Aria of Crescent Crest is barred from leaving the Citadel grounds under direct royal lockdown. She is to report to the High Court immediately."

Gasps erupted from the surrounding tables. Powerful Alphas and highborn Lunas from neighboring territories paused mid-drink, whispering behind raised silk fans. Whispers flooded the room like a sudden tide. Across the grand hall, sitting at a velvet-draped VIP table surrounded by noble suitors, sat Lady Selene.

Selene was exquisite. Dressed in a gown of woven gold, her dark hair pinned with diamond-encrusted crests, she was the undisputed favorite of the nobility. She had spent years perfecting her etiquette, cultivating her lineage, and waiting for the Lycan King to announce his royal selection. Hearing a nameless, rejected wolf summoned directly to the King's private court sent a sudden, icy chill through Selene's chest. Her calm expression faltered, her sharp, elegant eyes locking onto Aria with intense, quiet scrutiny.

"Aria..." Lady Eleanor murmured, stepping past Kieran. Her eyes glinted with a terrifying mix of ambition and calculating satisfaction. She placed a heavy hand on Aria’s shoulder, leaning in close. "Whatever you did out in those gardens... do not mess this up."

"I didn't do anything!" Aria whispered back, her heart beating frantically against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She felt completely numb. The golden mark on her neck burned hot, throbbing in sync with a powerful, distant heartbeat she could feel somewhere high above in the Citadel towers. Who was that man? What had he done to her?

"Move," the lead guard commanded.

Aria had no choice. Flanked by the heavy, clanking metal of the obsidian guards, she was escorted out of the lounge, leaving her family, Kieran, and the entire high-society court staring after her in absolute, stunned silence.

They walked through soaring, torch-lit corridors built of ancient black stone. The Citadel was massive, an ancient fortress carved directly into the side of a mountain, humming with a heavy, protective magic that made Aria’s skin prickle.

Finally, the guards halted before massive, ten-foot doors forged of black iron and silver.

"Inside," the guard ordered.

The doors groaned open, revealing a breathtaking, subterranean council chamber. High vaulted ceilings stretched into the darkness above, and long stained-glass windows cast deep violet and crimson light across the marble floor. Standing in a semi-circle near a raised dais were five elder councilors, three royal physicians in white robes, and several high-ranking generals.

And standing near the grand arched window, his back to the room, was the stranger from the garden.

Aria stopped dead in her tracks.

He was no longer half-hidden in the garden shadows. The sconce light hit his broad shoulders, catching the fine gold embroidery along the collar of his high-buttoned royal coat. The quiet, lethal aura filling the massive stone hall was identical to the suffocating presence that had pinned her against the marble pillar less than an hour ago.

Valerius turned around slowly.

Aria caught her breath. Under the chandelier light, his features were almost painfully handsome. A harsh, chiseled jawline shadowed with dark stubble, sharp cheekbones, and intense, luminous amber eyes that burned straight into hers.

"Your Majesty," Chief Physician Sharon spoke up, breaking the heavy tension as she bowed low. "The female has arrived."

Your Majesty.

The words hit Aria like a physical blow. Her knees felt weak, her breath catching violently in her chest as the truth shattered her mind.

The stranger who had caught her crying in the roses... the man who had laughed softly in her ear... the male who had buried his fangs into her neck on pure, wild impulse...

He wasn't a guard. He wasn't a noble lord.

He was Valerius Vane. The mateless Lycan King.

"Leave us," Valerius commanded smoothly, his deep, resonant voice echoing off the stone walls.

"Sire," Lord Vane, the head councilor, stepped forward nervously. "The mark... if it is a royal claim, the council must document—"

"I said leave," Valerius repeated, lower this time. A wave of heavy, crushing pressure rippled outward from his chest, making the iron doors rattle.

The councilors and guards didn't dare argue. They bowed quickly and filed out of the room, the heavy iron doors shutting with a loud, final THUD that echoed through the silence.

Aria was left alone with the King.

She swallowed hard, clutching her shawl tightly around her neck to cover the throbbing mark. "You..." she whispered, her voice shaking with a mix of shock, fear, and lingering heat. "You're the King."

Valerius took a slow, deliberate step toward her. His amber eyes dropped to her neck, watching the golden light of his own mark pulsing beneath her skin.

"I am," he said quietly.

"Why am I locked here?!" Aria demanded, her pride flaring through her panic as she took a step back. "You bit me! You attacked me in the dark, and now your guards are dragging me around like a criminal! Undo it! Whatever you did to my neck, take it back so I can leave!"

Valerius stopped a few feet away, a dark, solemn look crossing his handsome face.

"I can't," he said flatly.

"What do you mean you can't?!" Aria cried, her voice echoing in the vast room. "You're the King! You have all the power in the realm!"

"A Lycan mark is not a casual agreement, little wolf," Valerius said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers stopping just short of touching her face. "It is an ancient bond forged in blood and soul. It cannot be broken, erased, or severed unless one of us dies."

Aria went deathly pale, her breath hitching as the full weight of his words slammed into her. "No... no, that's impossible. I don't even know you!"

"And I don't know you," Valerius replied, his dark eyes searching her terrified face. "Yet my beast chose you. And now, whether either of us wants it or not... you belong to the High Throne."

The air in the subterranean Vault Chamber was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burned ozone and dark, decaying magic.Valerius stood over the shattered pedestal, his jaw locked tight as his golden amber eyes swept over the scorched runes on the floor. Beside him, Lord Kaelen wiped sweat from his wrinkled brow, while Lady Seraphina stared at the empty space where the kingdom’s deadliest relic had rested moments ago."Nine layers of blood-bound wards," Valerius growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. "Disabled without a single alarm going off. This was not an infiltration from the outside. It was a handed key.""The Eye of Malakor can corrupt an entire wolf core within days, Your Grace," Lady Seraphina warned softly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp concern. "Whoever took it does not just want to fight you. They want to tear the capital down from the inside.""Search every noble carriage leaving the grounds," Valerius commanded, tur

The scream echoed off the stone walls of the tower, sharp and laden with agonizing heat.Valerius moved before the sound could leave the room, his golden dragon wolf aura surging outward like a tidal wave to smother the sound waves and muffle the castle's warning wards. He slammed the heavy bolt into place and turned back toward the bed.Aria was writhing against the sheets, her skin flushed a feverish pink. Her hands clawed at her collar, gasping for air as her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blazed in the dim light. It was a primal, undeniable heat. Because her core had been weak and dormant for years, she had never experienced her wolf's awakening cycle. The sudden flood of purifying power had violently triggered her first rut, and her body was demanding her mate.At first, Valerius held back, gripping the edge of the mattress as he fought his own roaring instincts. He did not want her first time to be a frantic blur driven purely by heat."Valerius," she whimpered, pouting as her hands t

The heavy oak door rattled against its iron hinges as the head of security stood breathless in the threshold.Valerius did not move away from Aria’s bed immediately. His thumb remained resting against the faint, warm pulse at her wrist, feeling the quiet hum of her hidden core beneath her skin. Slowly, he pulled his hand back and turned toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber."Say that again," Valerius commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl."The perimeter wards at the eastern city gate, Your Grace," Captain Vane stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The barrier didn't buckle from an attack. It dissolved from the inside out. The magical signature left on the gate mechanism was an inverted royal seal.""Lucien," Valerius muttered under his breath.A deep, suffocating tension seized Valerius’s chest. The royal passkeys were bound strictly to the bloodline and locked in the royal vault beneath the Council’s jurisdiction. Lucien c

The air in the grand courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and copper. Beyond the heavy iron gates leading down to the subterranean trial grounds, a frantic crowd of royal guards and nervous Selection candidates had gathered. Rumors of dark magic leaking from the sealed depths had spread through the palace like wildfire, leaving everyone in a state of high tension. When the heavy iron doors ground open, silence fell over the yardKing Valerius stepped into the sunlight, his face a mask of cold granite. In his arms lay Aria, pale and unresponsive, her head resting against his chest.Royal physicians swarmed forward, their light-enchanted instruments glowing as they scanned her slumped form. Before the chief healer could speak to the crowd, Valerius leaned in, his voice dropping to a harsh, private whisper that only the physician could hear."Her core is shattered," Valerius commanded, his dark gold eyes locking onto the healer's in an implicit threat. "She is an unranked girl who

The moment the barrier swallowed her, the world turned deathly still.Aria hit the stone ground on her hands and knees, gasping for air. The sky above was invisible, replaced by high, cavernous stone arches dripping with dark moisture. The air did not smell like the rain-slicked pines outside the Citadel. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating, carrying a sharp, metallic stench that made her stomach churn. It smelled like old, dried blood, yet the pristine stone floors beneath her held no visible stain. She pushed herself up, her knees trembling as her bandaged hands gripped her tunic. At first, every breath felt like inhaling tiny fragments of ice, her lungs burning under the dense weight of the atmosphere. But as she stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs, the strange golden heat under her skin surged outward. Her breathing gradually evened out. She adjusted.Aria looked around in awe and terror. She was standing inside a vast, subterranean fortress. It was a royal bunker

In the subterranean security wing of the Citadel, the air was thick with tension. High-definition monitors lined the cold granite walls, flickered with live feeds from every corridor, courtyard, and perimeter fence.Valerius stood motionless behind the chief security officer. His broad hands gripped the leather back of the officer's chair, the steel framework groaning under his immense strength. His breathing was dangerously shallow, his jaw locked in a rigid, icy line.Deep within his chest, the tether that bound his wolf spirit to Aria’s collarbone mark had gone completely numb. It was not a faint pulse or a distant ache; it was a terrifying, hollow silence. If she were anywhere within these stone walls, my beast would feel her, Valerius thought, his amber eyes burning into the dark screens. She cannot be where I think she is. She wouldn't be that foolish."Check the southern boundary feeds," Valerius commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a shudder through the tec
