The Grand Council Chamber smelled of cold stone, old parchment, and the heavy, suffocating scent of anxious Alphas. High above, narrow stained-glass windows painted the obsidian floor in harsh streaks of blood-red and bruise-purple.

Valerius sat upon the High Throne, his long legs crossed, his jaw set in stone. Beneath his royal tunic, his skin burned. The mark he had left on Aria pulsed with a slow, frantic rhythm that echoed her panic from across the fortress.

He hated it. He hated the way his beast clawed at his ribs, demanding he go to her. He was a sovereign king, yet a single, seemingly fragile female had thrown his entire existence into chaos.

"Your Majesty, this is madness!" Lord Vane, a high councilor with paper-thin skin and greedy, sunken eyes, stepped forward. "A marked female cannot simply suspend centuries of royal law! Look at her records! She comes from a minor crest pack. Her wolf is barely responsive! She will crack like porcelain the moment she carries a royal pregnancy!"

Beside him, another councilor adjusted his heavy gold chain. "Vane speaks the truth, Sire. Duke Julian’s daughter, Selene, has trained her entire life for the Selection. She possesses the strongest Alpha bloodline in the realm. To cancel the trials for a rejected, fragile female is an insult to every high pack!"

Chief Physician Sharon adjusted her wire-rimmed spectacles, her sharp blue eyes darting nervously between the squabbling councilors and the King. She clutched her medical ledgers against her chest, her pale hands trembling slightly. She knew the truth about Aria’s sealed wolf, but the deadly look in Valerius’s eyes warned her to stay silent. The political sharks in this room would tear the girl apart if they knew she carried ancient, dormant power.

Valerius slowly leaned forward, his eyes flashing a dangerous crimson. "Have I said the Selection is canceled?"

Silence slammed over the chamber.

"The trials will proceed," Valerius declared, his voice cold and flat. "Every pack will present their daughters. The female, Aria, will remain in the east wing under guard. She is... an anomaly. A mistake of impulse."

He forced his inner beast down, though the bite mark on his own neck flared in sharp protest. He would not let his pride be ruined by a female his wolf irrationally chose.

Three floors below, news of the royal decree hit the Crescent Crest Pack’s holding quarters like a lightning bolt.

"She is staying in the palace?!" Isabelle shrieked, her face flushed red as she slammed her crystal wine glass onto the table, shattering the stem. "She is a rejected mate! She can't even shift properly!"

"Isabelle, control yourself," Lady Eleanor commanded smoothly, a calculating smile touching her lips. Eleanor’s mind was already racing with fresh ambition. "Aria is locked in the royal wing. That gives our family direct leverage with the High Throne."

From the corner of the room, Mirabel stepped forward, her eyes wide with desperation. "Mother, please! Let me enter the Selection! If the King is still holding the trials, I want to go! Please nominate me!"

"Absurd," Eleanor snapped, waving her hand dismissively. "Aria is already marked by the King. I will not have you going in there and ruining your sister's chances of securing our family's power."

Mirabel’s face contorted with jealousy, and she immediately turned to Alpha Kieran. "Kieran, you are the Alpha of our pack! You have the power to put my name forward for the trials! Please!"

Kieran stood near the hearth, his jaw set tight. He could still smell the crushing, dominant scent of the King’s mark clinging to Aria's memory, and his bruised pride was eating him alive. Did he discard her too quickly? Was there something about Aria he had missed?

Wanting to assert his authority and prove he wasn't afraid of the King, Kieran looked at Mirabel and nodded slowly. "You will represent the Crescent Crest Pack, Mirabel. I approve it."

"Kieran!" Eleanor gasped, but Kieran simply walked out of the room, his head spinning with regret and bitter pride.

Before the pack departed the Citadel grounds, Lady Eleanor was permitted a short visit to Aria’s new quarters.

Eleanor walked into the grand room, her sharp eyes scanning the high vaulted ceilings, the roaring marble fireplace, and the tall arched windows overlooking the mist-shrouded royal gardens.

"Well, well," Eleanor murmured, walking over to Aria and taking her hands with an unusual warmth. "Look at this place. I knew you had potential, my sweet girl."

"Mother, I don't want to be here," Aria whispered, her voice trembling. "He doesn't even want me. He called me a mistake."

"Listen to me, Aria," Eleanor said sternly, leaning in close. "Men like the Lycan King are ruled by power. You have his mark on your neck. Use it. Smile, stay quiet, and keep his attention on you. I will call you through the mirror link every evening. If you need anything, you call me immediately, honey. Do not let Isabelle or Mirabel ruin this for us."

After a quick, superficial goodbye, her family left, leaving Aria standing alone in the massive suite.

Aria walked toward the adjoining dressing room and gasped softly. Rows of silk and velvet gowns hung in cherry-wood wardrobes, dyed in rich emeralds, deep sapphires, and royal golds, fabrics so fine she had never even touched them before.

A quiet knock echoed at the door, and a young maid carrying a silver tray stepped inside.

"My lady," the maid said, bowing her head politely. "I am Rose. I have been assigned to serve your quarters."

The servants did not mock her, but they did not fawn over her either. They treated her with a cold, precise respect, fulfilling her every need without offering warmth. It was a polite distance that made Aria feel completely isolated.

Aria walked out onto her stone balcony, leaning against the cold railing. Below her lay the sprawling royal gardens, bathed in silver moonlight, the very place where the stranger had pinned her against the pillar.

Her hand drifted up to her collarbone, where his mark pulsed with a steady, fiery warmth.

It terrified her how much her wolf yearned for him. Despite his cold words in the council chamber, despite the humiliation of being labeled an accident, every cell in her body burned for his touch. She could still feel the phantom sensation of his warm breath against her skin and the intoxicating scent of dark cedar and rain that belonged only to him.

Why did her wolf submit to him so completely? Why did she feel this helpless, burning pull toward a King who looked at her with such wounded pride?

Aria clutched the stone railing, a sudden, unfamiliar heat flaring deep within her chest. Her wolf, usually so silent and weak, let out a low, thrumming growl beneath her ribs.

She was locked in a golden cage, dismissed by the King himself, but as she stared into the quiet night air, Aria made a quiet promise to herself. She was not going to sit in this room and fade away like a ghost.

The heavy bronze doors of the Grand Council Chamber did not just open, King Valerius threw them back with enough force to echo like thunder through the obsidian hall.Silence fell over the room instantly. Lord Julian stood at the head of the long stone table, a scroll detailing the emergency Royal Extraction Protocol gripped tightly in his hands. Beside him stood Selene, her chin held high in arrogant victory, flanked by heavily armed noble guards.Valerius stepped into the hall, his imposing aura radiating a crushing pressure that made the surrounding guards flinch. Directly behind his shoulder stood Aria, keeping close to his shadow. She pulled back her velvet hood, letting her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blaze in the torchlight. The raw gold and silver magic spilled across her vision, burning wild and completely unpredictable. She squeezed her fists tight at her sides, fighting to keep the unfamiliar power pulsing in her veins from overflowing.A collective gasp rippled through the Co

The air in the subterranean Vault Chamber was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burned ozone and dark, decaying magic.Valerius stood over the shattered pedestal, his jaw locked tight as his golden amber eyes swept over the scorched runes on the floor. Beside him, Lord Kaelen wiped sweat from his wrinkled brow, while Lady Seraphina stared at the empty space where the kingdom’s deadliest relic had rested moments ago."Nine layers of blood-bound wards," Valerius growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. "Disabled without a single alarm going off. This was not an infiltration from the outside. It was a handed key.""The Eye of Malakor can corrupt an entire wolf core within days, Your Grace," Lady Seraphina warned softly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp concern. "Whoever took it does not just want to fight you. They want to tear the capital down from the inside.""Search every noble carriage leaving the grounds," Valerius commanded, tur

The scream echoed off the stone walls of the tower, sharp and laden with agonizing heat.Valerius moved before the sound could leave the room, his golden dragon wolf aura surging outward like a tidal wave to smother the sound waves and muffle the castle's warning wards. He slammed the heavy bolt into place and turned back toward the bed.Aria was writhing against the sheets, her skin flushed a feverish pink. Her hands clawed at her collar, gasping for air as her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blazed in the dim light. It was a primal, undeniable heat. Because her core had been weak and dormant for years, she had never experienced her wolf's awakening cycle. The sudden flood of purifying power had violently triggered her first rut, and her body was demanding her mate.At first, Valerius held back, gripping the edge of the mattress as he fought his own roaring instincts. He did not want her first time to be a frantic blur driven purely by heat."Valerius," she whimpered, pouting as her hands t

The heavy oak door rattled against its iron hinges as the head of security stood breathless in the threshold.Valerius did not move away from Aria’s bed immediately. His thumb remained resting against the faint, warm pulse at her wrist, feeling the quiet hum of her hidden core beneath her skin. Slowly, he pulled his hand back and turned toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber."Say that again," Valerius commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl."The perimeter wards at the eastern city gate, Your Grace," Captain Vane stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The barrier didn't buckle from an attack. It dissolved from the inside out. The magical signature left on the gate mechanism was an inverted royal seal.""Lucien," Valerius muttered under his breath.A deep, suffocating tension seized Valerius’s chest. The royal passkeys were bound strictly to the bloodline and locked in the royal vault beneath the Council’s jurisdiction. Lucien c

The air in the grand courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and copper. Beyond the heavy iron gates leading down to the subterranean trial grounds, a frantic crowd of royal guards and nervous Selection candidates had gathered. Rumors of dark magic leaking from the sealed depths had spread through the palace like wildfire, leaving everyone in a state of high tension. When the heavy iron doors ground open, silence fell over the yardKing Valerius stepped into the sunlight, his face a mask of cold granite. In his arms lay Aria, pale and unresponsive, her head resting against his chest.Royal physicians swarmed forward, their light-enchanted instruments glowing as they scanned her slumped form. Before the chief healer could speak to the crowd, Valerius leaned in, his voice dropping to a harsh, private whisper that only the physician could hear."Her core is shattered," Valerius commanded, his dark gold eyes locking onto the healer's in an implicit threat. "She is an unranked girl who

The moment the barrier swallowed her, the world turned deathly still.Aria hit the stone ground on her hands and knees, gasping for air. The sky above was invisible, replaced by high, cavernous stone arches dripping with dark moisture. The air did not smell like the rain-slicked pines outside the Citadel. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating, carrying a sharp, metallic stench that made her stomach churn. It smelled like old, dried blood, yet the pristine stone floors beneath her held no visible stain. She pushed herself up, her knees trembling as her bandaged hands gripped her tunic. At first, every breath felt like inhaling tiny fragments of ice, her lungs burning under the dense weight of the atmosphere. But as she stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs, the strange golden heat under her skin surged outward. Her breathing gradually evened out. She adjusted.Aria looked around in awe and terror. She was standing inside a vast, subterranean fortress. It was a royal bunker
