Aria’s breath caught in her throat. She had slipped out into the royal gardens hoping the crisp night air would dull the raw, agonizing ache in her chest. Instead, the atmosphere out here felt unnaturally thick, heavy with the dark, intoxicating scent of crushed midnight roses, damp earth, and pine.

Moonlight cut through the archway of sprawling white wisteria, casting harsh silver shadows across the man standing before her.

He was breathtaking. A strong, sharp jawline shadow-dusted with dark stubble, plush lips, and high cheekbones looked chiseled from marble. His dark hair was slightly tossed by the breeze, but it was his eyes that pinned her in place. They burned with an intense, luminous amber that seemed to cut straight through her defenses. Broad-shouldered and lethal, he exuded a natural, quiet dominance that made her knees tremble.

Her broken wolf, which had been whimpering silently since Alpha Kieran brutally severed their connection, suddenly went completely still. It did not cower. It bowed its head in a deep, instinctual submission, sending a sudden flush of unexpected heat racing straight down her spine.

Aria gripped the cold marble pillar behind her, forcing her chin up despite the embarrassment burning in her cheeks. "Into your home?" she snapped back, her voice shaking slightly with raw defiance. "Your garden? Who are you supposed to be, the guard in charge of the rosebushes?"

Valerius stared down at the small, fierce female pinned against his pillar.

When he felt a weak, intruder wolf cross the magical perimeter of his private sanctuary, he walked out expecting to execute a fool. He was the sovereign ruler of the realm, and no one stepped foot into his private quarters without permission.

Instead, he was met with the sweet, intoxicating scent of freesia mixed with fresh blood.

He looked down at the raw, bruised mark on her throat, recognizing the jagged tear of a severed mate bond. Someone had ripped away her connection and left her to bleed internally. His inner Lycan, an ancient beast that had been dormant for decades, suddenly roared to life inside his chest. A terrifying, violent wave of possessiveness slammed through his blood, completely overpowering his rigid self-control.

Mine.

The instinct hit him like a physical blow. Valerius did not calculate. He did not think about his throne, his bloodline, or his politics.

In one silent stride, he closed the distance between them, cupped the back of her neck with a broad hand, and buried his fangs deep into the hollow of her collarbone.

Aria gasped, a high, strangled sound breaking from her lips as a searing, blinding heat flooded her veins. It was not full physical intimacy, but it felt raw, primal, and suffocatingly intense. The phantom pain of Kieran's rejection was instantly burned away, replaced by an unbreakable, dark weight settling over her soul.

Just as quickly as his control had snapped, Valerius pulled back.

He staggered a half-step, staring at the fresh, golden-tinted mark pulsing on her pale skin in absolute horror. What had he done? He had just placed a royal Lycan claim on an unknown, broken wolf. He turned and vanished into the shadowed treeline without another word, leaving her gasping against the marble.

The bass from the orchestra thrummed through the floorboards as Aria pushed open the heavy wooden doors of the holding lounge. The Citadel’s grand ballroom was alive with clinking champagne flutes, silk gowns, and laughing high-society Alphas, but the moment Aria stepped inside, the air in her corner of the room went dead silent.

"Where have you been?!" Isabelle hissed, stepping forward in her shimmering gown, her hand tucked through Alpha Kieran’s arm.

Before Aria could answer, Kieran suddenly froze. His face drained of all color, his wolf whining loudly in his mind as he stumbled back a step. Isabelle gasped, clapping her hand over her mouth.

"The smell..." Kieran whispered, looking at Aria with genuine fear. "Who touched you, Aria? What male did you just let mark you?!"

"What are you talking about?" Isabelle shrieked, her voice twisting in pure jealousy and rage as she felt the suffocating, heavy aura clinging to her younger sister's skin. "Aria, you disgusting little rat! You threw yourself at some low-class guard in the garden just to embarrass us, didn't you?!"

"Isabelle, lower your voice," their mother, Lady Eleanor, commanded smoothly, stepping into the circle. Eleanor’s sharp eyes darted from Aria’s flushed face to the dangerous, crushing energy rolling off her daughter's body. A dark, calculating smile touched Eleanor's lips. "Well. It seems your sister found someone powerful enough to mask Kieran's pathetic leftover mark."

"Mother!" Isabelle cried, stamping her heel. "She's ruining my night!"

Aria clutched her shawl tight around her throat, her head spinning. She did not know who the stranger was. She only knew that the mark on her neck burned with an authority so heavy it made every pack leader in the room look small.

Before the argument could escalate, the heavy double doors of the main hall flew open. Two towering royal guards clad in obsidian armor marched in, their iron spears striking the marble floor with a deafening clang.

"Aria of the Crescent Crest Pack!" the lead guard announced, his voice echoing across the quieted room. "By order of His Royal Majesty, you are summoned to the High Throne immediately."

The air in the subterranean Vault Chamber was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burned ozone and dark, decaying magic.Valerius stood over the shattered pedestal, his jaw locked tight as his golden amber eyes swept over the scorched runes on the floor. Beside him, Lord Kaelen wiped sweat from his wrinkled brow, while Lady Seraphina stared at the empty space where the kingdom’s deadliest relic had rested moments ago."Nine layers of blood-bound wards," Valerius growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. "Disabled without a single alarm going off. This was not an infiltration from the outside. It was a handed key.""The Eye of Malakor can corrupt an entire wolf core within days, Your Grace," Lady Seraphina warned softly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp concern. "Whoever took it does not just want to fight you. They want to tear the capital down from the inside.""Search every noble carriage leaving the grounds," Valerius commanded, tur

The scream echoed off the stone walls of the tower, sharp and laden with agonizing heat.Valerius moved before the sound could leave the room, his golden dragon wolf aura surging outward like a tidal wave to smother the sound waves and muffle the castle's warning wards. He slammed the heavy bolt into place and turned back toward the bed.Aria was writhing against the sheets, her skin flushed a feverish pink. Her hands clawed at her collar, gasping for air as her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blazed in the dim light. It was a primal, undeniable heat. Because her core had been weak and dormant for years, she had never experienced her wolf's awakening cycle. The sudden flood of purifying power had violently triggered her first rut, and her body was demanding her mate.At first, Valerius held back, gripping the edge of the mattress as he fought his own roaring instincts. He did not want her first time to be a frantic blur driven purely by heat."Valerius," she whimpered, pouting as her hands t

The heavy oak door rattled against its iron hinges as the head of security stood breathless in the threshold.Valerius did not move away from Aria’s bed immediately. His thumb remained resting against the faint, warm pulse at her wrist, feeling the quiet hum of her hidden core beneath her skin. Slowly, he pulled his hand back and turned toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber."Say that again," Valerius commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl."The perimeter wards at the eastern city gate, Your Grace," Captain Vane stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The barrier didn't buckle from an attack. It dissolved from the inside out. The magical signature left on the gate mechanism was an inverted royal seal.""Lucien," Valerius muttered under his breath.A deep, suffocating tension seized Valerius’s chest. The royal passkeys were bound strictly to the bloodline and locked in the royal vault beneath the Council’s jurisdiction. Lucien c

The air in the grand courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and copper. Beyond the heavy iron gates leading down to the subterranean trial grounds, a frantic crowd of royal guards and nervous Selection candidates had gathered. Rumors of dark magic leaking from the sealed depths had spread through the palace like wildfire, leaving everyone in a state of high tension. When the heavy iron doors ground open, silence fell over the yardKing Valerius stepped into the sunlight, his face a mask of cold granite. In his arms lay Aria, pale and unresponsive, her head resting against his chest.Royal physicians swarmed forward, their light-enchanted instruments glowing as they scanned her slumped form. Before the chief healer could speak to the crowd, Valerius leaned in, his voice dropping to a harsh, private whisper that only the physician could hear."Her core is shattered," Valerius commanded, his dark gold eyes locking onto the healer's in an implicit threat. "She is an unranked girl who

The moment the barrier swallowed her, the world turned deathly still.Aria hit the stone ground on her hands and knees, gasping for air. The sky above was invisible, replaced by high, cavernous stone arches dripping with dark moisture. The air did not smell like the rain-slicked pines outside the Citadel. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating, carrying a sharp, metallic stench that made her stomach churn. It smelled like old, dried blood, yet the pristine stone floors beneath her held no visible stain. She pushed herself up, her knees trembling as her bandaged hands gripped her tunic. At first, every breath felt like inhaling tiny fragments of ice, her lungs burning under the dense weight of the atmosphere. But as she stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs, the strange golden heat under her skin surged outward. Her breathing gradually evened out. She adjusted.Aria looked around in awe and terror. She was standing inside a vast, subterranean fortress. It was a royal bunker

In the subterranean security wing of the Citadel, the air was thick with tension. High-definition monitors lined the cold granite walls, flickered with live feeds from every corridor, courtyard, and perimeter fence.Valerius stood motionless behind the chief security officer. His broad hands gripped the leather back of the officer's chair, the steel framework groaning under his immense strength. His breathing was dangerously shallow, his jaw locked in a rigid, icy line.Deep within his chest, the tether that bound his wolf spirit to Aria’s collarbone mark had gone completely numb. It was not a faint pulse or a distant ache; it was a terrifying, hollow silence. If she were anywhere within these stone walls, my beast would feel her, Valerius thought, his amber eyes burning into the dark screens. She cannot be where I think she is. She wouldn't be that foolish."Check the southern boundary feeds," Valerius commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a shudder through the tec
