“Don’t worry, Mom.” I hugged her, trying to comfort her. “We will protect you. I believe Maddox is doing his best to find a way to increase our defense. No pack can easily destroy us.”
“You won’t protect me. You will meet your mate today.” Mom pinches my chin with affection.
“Well then, I’ll force him to ignore the tradition and stay with us,” I joked.
“No!!!” Dad, Mom, and Garrett shouted in unison.
I looked at them in surprise. “What? Are you guys so impatient to kick me out of the house? Is that why you’re so hopeful I’ll meet my mate today?” I asked, pretending to be angry.
Mom’s mood changed for the better. She was no longer thinking about our intense conversation. Dad and Garrett shared the jokes they had. So, the rest of our trip was full of laughter. Even that annoying Tyra was giggling.
“OK. We have arrived.” Garrett stopped the car in the available parking space.
“I’m sure you will discuss that matter later at royal dinner. Watch your words, Son. Don’t say any bad thing about dead people.” Dad patted Garrett’s back.
My brother nodded obediently. He was a Beta in our pack. He and Alpha Maddox were best friends. So it was not a surprise when he got his Alpha position, he chose Garrett to be his second in charge. They were a brilliant duo who managed to bring our pack into the fifth largest werewolves packs in the North Kingdom. There were four hundred werewolves in our group.
As the daughter of a Beta, I didn’t want to lose to Garrett. We had been training together since we were little pups. I was a girl, but Dad didn’t care about that fact. He had taught me just as hard as my brother. The result was very satisfying. I became one of the strongest warriors in our pack.
Maddox gave me the task of training our young pups, also leading the patrols at night. I was a bit more powerful than my comrades.
There were so many vehicles around us. It was a common sight every time this annual event was held. The werewolves who came were getting younger every year.
‘It’s you who’s getting older,’ Lou teased.
‘Oh, shut up!’ I teased her back.
We walked together to the location where the mateless werewolves assembled. The first thing we should do was for all mateless women needed to stand in the spot they provided. Then the men would walk past all of us until they smelled the unique scent of the mate destined for him.
A large number of werewolves gathered together in one place was not an easy thing to hide. Therefore this event was held in the middle of the forest so that no one knew about it.
“Go, Cora. Hope you meet him this year.” Mom hugged me and kissed my cheek. I looked at Dad and Garrett as they nodded their heads at me.
The eyes of many men followed me, not caring that they already had their mates. I might not have a mate yet, but my charm was not lesser to the she-wolves who had one.
I was blessed with blonde hair that I let grow so long it touched my lower back. I had green eyes, an oval face, thin lips, and a straight nose. My body was curvy and a bit muscular because I often practiced.
I did not need to swing my hips on purpose to get attention. My natural way of walking was enough to attract the men around me. The mateless men in my pack often joke about wanting to sleep with me, so I was not surprised to see the men in this place fantasize about me with nothing to cover my body.
‘They can only dream. I won’t let them touch us if he’s not our mate.’ Lou snorted arrogantly.
‘We agree on that. Enjoy it, Lou. It could be our last year being watched by many men.’
I arrived at the place provided by the committee. I stood with the other girls, waiting to be picked up by our mates. Lou was silent and did not respond to my sentence earlier. She did it again.
‘Why are you always silent when I’m discussing this?’
‘Because I don’t smell anything, Cora. I don’t like to spoil your excitement, but I don’t smell our mate is in here.’ Lou sounded sad and desperate.
Yes, she was right. She had ruined everything. I was not excited about this event anymore. ‘Let’s just hope that he’s coming late,’ I hoped.
The king of the werewolves, a higher position than the Alphas, greeted us all. King Edmund looked elegant with his royal robe and magnificent crown. He was the first king to make a peace treaty.
I had not been born in the era when war was still happening in this land. But I did not want to imagine a life of terror and anxiety where war could break out at any moment.
The crown prince, Prince Elric, stood by his side. He had found his mate. She was his second chance because he rejected the first one, the daughter of a classless warrior. He just wanted to be with the daughter of an Alpha. And he got what he wanted.
However, neither his spouse nor the Queen was present. Poor woman. She had been sick for years for an unknown reason. The Queen gave birth to Prince Elric and had not been away from her bed ever since.
After King Edmund ended his speech, the event began. One by one, the men walked vigorously through the women from the starting point of the queue. To avoid chaos, the committee gave enough distance from one man to the next one.
The first happy shriek came from behind me. The first two lucky werewolves found their mates. The next cheers of joy rang out. One at a time, women left the line, following their respective mates.
The young woman standing on my left gasped in surprise. I turned and saw her staring lovingly at a handsome man with a strong aura like an Alpha walking over. What a lucky girl!
“My mate! Mate!” said the woman, greeting him.
The man smiled at her. “What’s your name?” he asked gently.
“Alicia Cooper, Alpha. I am pleased to be united with you. You won’t regret having me accompany you as Luna.”
“I, Alpha Devon Lancaster of the Blood River Pack, reject you, Alicia Cooper, as my mate and Luna,” the man said viciously.
Everyone gasped at his evil deed. The silent forest suddenly filled with loud whispers. Everybody talked at the same time to the person beside them to share their shock.
“Why …?” asked the girl with her arms folded and a pained expression on her face. She fell to her knees unable to endure the discomfort.
I quickly knelt beside her, trying to help. I did not know what to do because it never happened before. It was the first time I witnessed a werewolf rejected the mate. However, I let her hold and squeeze my hand to ease her pain.
“Quick! Accept my rejection,” the man rebuked impatiently.
Alicia wept bitterly. I would do the same thing if rejected by the mate assigned to me. “I, Alicia Cooper, daughter of Alpha Richard Cooper of Silent Crescent Pack, accept your rejection,” said Alicia, who managed to pronounce it though it was difficult for her.
The man left without any remorse or pain from the rejection. He walked with firm steps and arrogant eyes. It was as if the forced broken bond had not broken his heart and soul. Was it because he had no feeling for her that the breaking of their ties as mates didn’t affect him?
Two women approached and helped Alicia to get up. They took her to where our families were. I stood up and fixed the clothes I was wearing. I looked at the girl. Poor her. It was the first time I had witnessed a participant reject his mate in front of everyone.
The event continued. But the high enthusiasm that had filled this place was suddenly gone. I understood how they felt because I felt it, too. What if the same fate befell me? What if my mate rejected me as cruelly as just happened?
My body was shaking at that thought. Alicia was a beautiful woman and an Alpha's daughter, yet that man rejected her. I might be attractive to other he-wolves. But what if my mate looked at me and found me repulsive?
As expected, I was the one standing still on the ground as no one came to get me. I would spend this year alone again. Of course, with the more intense bullying from my sister-in-law and her best friend. The committee asked us to return to our families. Dad and Mom looked at me with sympathy on their faces. I could only be a daughter that brings them ashamed. I was raised by Beta. Unfortunately, my fate was worse than an Omega, the lowest class in the werewolf pack. Most of the Omegas in our pack had found their mates. Not all of them met their destined mates who came from the Goddess. Some chose their own ones and completed the mating and marking rituals. I could not choose my own mate as Lou would not let me do that. She hoped that we would meet our destined one. She had been waiting this long, so she did not want to give up yet. “You will find him. He’s somewhere out there looking for a chance to meet you,” Mom said as she hugged me tightly. I held myself back from crying. “Let
Before I could turn around, something powerful slammed into my body. Fortunately, I was fast enough to grip it and throw it away from me. A familiar laugh echoed in the forest. I looked at the attacker with a sneer. He needed to change his trick because it was boring and predictable. He stood up straight and got in a position ready to attack. His mouth formed a grin. Other wolves might be scared to see that, but not me. I had never even bowed to him, let alone flinched against him. “Why are you standing still? Come and get me!” I challenged. With a stomp of a foot, he ran over. I prepared to tackle his blow. His right hand clenched into a hard fist and launched toward my face. A few inches before he could reach my cheek, I dodged. Suddenly, he shifted and increased his movement speed significantly compared to mine. Cheater! I couldn’t transform that fast. While dodging strike after strike, I looked for an opening to distance myself. ‘Now!’ Lou commanded as I saw the chance to esca
Lou ran so fast to the riverbank. It was as if something enormous was controlling her. My heart was beating rapidly the closer we got to the river. It couldn’t be right. Even if she was powerful, she couldn’t face the intruder alone. ‘Lou, we need to call someone. We can’t face the enemy alone!’ I warned her. ‘There!’ She said. I could feel she was worried about something. She ran towards the thing on the riverbank. I saw it as soon as I passed the rock blocking my view. A man was lying there in torn clothes. I quickly approached, noticing his heart beating weaker and weaker. I noticed his chest rising and falling, signaling he was still alive. The delicious scent I had inhaled earlier was getting stronger as if coming from his body. Who was he? How did he get here? Judging from the bluish color of his skin, he must have been drifting for days. ‘Mate!’ Lou shouted. What? ‘Mate! He’s our mate!’ Oh, Goddess! He’s our mate? I touched his cheek, and something weird ran through my vei
Maddox and Garrett stood side by side when I arrived in front of the ICU room. Garrett shook his head slowly, telling me he couldn't help me this time. Maddox looked at me coldly, expressionlessly. I was like a puppy caught biting his mom's favorite couch and ready to be punished. “You found him last night,” Maddox said. It was a statement, not a question. “Yes, Alpha,” I replied politely. I knew this wasn’t the time to act like a friend. So, I called him by his title. “Then what’s the reason you didn’t report this to me as soon as possible?” he demanded. I glanced at Garrett. He just looked at me blankly. “I’m sorry, it haven’t cross my mind. We’ve almost lost him, so-” “We?” he cut off. “Lou and I. He was dying and died suddenly. So, I gave him a CPR to help. I thought about calling Luke because he could help us. I didn’t think to report this to you immediately. After all, he didn’t look like a bad guy.” “Why did you must mention CPR?” asked Aspen, who walked up from behind Ma
Aspen entered the room with a bright red face. I didn't know what she was angry about. Although she quickly put her face to a neutral expression, I already saw it. Could it be that she was upset about the fact that I found my partner? A Luna should not overhear conversations, let alone interrupt others. But I chose to remain silent and not protest her disrespectful act. Luke bowed respectfully to her while I just stared at her fearlessly. “Why are you silent? Answer me!” she demanded. “We have a guest of honor, so you shouldn’t spread unverifiable news. This man is no ordinary person. He’s an Alpha that the whole world is paying attention to.” I almost rolled my eyes at that because she was the one who liked to gossip and spread it. I didn’t say anything about Alpha Axel being my mate. Luke and the nurses deduced it themselves because they witnessed him kissing me. “We don’t gossip, Luna,” Luke said politely, he glanced at me. “Cora and Alpha Axel are mates. He even confirmed it by
[Axel] My chest was tight. Every time I took a breath, my left chest ached. The shouts of the people who attacked me, the mocking laughter, and the sweet voice that broke my heart blended, deafening my ears. All of that indicated that I was still alive. What for? I had lost everything. Father, Mother, best friend, mate, even the place where I was born and grew up. What else could I do in this world as an orphan? Become a Rogue and live in rebellion? I did not want to live with the group that had caused the deaths of those closest to me. The delicious scent of cinnamon entered my nostrils. Mom’s signature scent whenever she made our family's favorite bread. I always knew she was nearby whenever I inhaled that scent. Mom was gone, so where did this intoxicating fragrance come from? I opened my eyes and met a pair of beautiful green eyes. Her long blonde hair was in a ponytail with bangs covering the forehead. The scent grew stronger whenever she got closer and lessened when she moved
I didn’t have any personal belongings, only the clothes I wore, so I didn’t need to pack up before leaving the hospital. Because the effects of the medicine had worn off completely, all my senses were functioning well. My sight, hearing, and smell were sharp again. I vaguely smelled that delicious cinnamon scent. I believed Cora must still be around the hospital. Maddox was talking to Luke about my next appointment. The doctor was amazed at how quickly I recovered. That was not unusual for an Alpha. The hospital was quite large and spacious. Nurses were not walking around, showing that not many patients were treated in this building. In peacetime, the hospital was not crowded because werewolves rarely got sick. Even if they suffered from a severe illness, it was detected before it was difficult to cure. “Don’t lie! You took advantage of his unconscious state by calling him your mate. How could such a handsome and powerful man be your mate,” a woman exclaimed. I stopped my steps and
Maddox kept his word by coming to pick me up in the morning. Garrett was also in the car. Unlike yesterday, Maddox drove. I sat in the back seat by myself. They called out the names of the places we passed, introducing me to restaurants and shops for groceries. The car then stopped in front of a building. There were only a few vehicles, which I was sure belonged to people who lived quite far from here. We werewolves preferred to walk in our packs. Maddox walked first, so I followed. They led me to the back of the building. It turned out to be a spacious field where people practiced martial arts. They must all be his warriors. Not only men, there were also women among the soldiers.“This is where we train. Garrett and I sometimes participate when paperwork doesn’t occupy our attention. Cora is in charge of the training.” She looked at the woman who was dueling with a heavily built man.Although the man was fast and cautious in every move, Cora managed to keep up with him. The duel was
