[Thad’s POV]

When the sun comes the next morning, I don’t waste any time heading out. After tossing and turning for the entire night, I was more than ready to busy myself as a distraction from the war that is raging within me. By the time I arrive at the airport, I’m in a mood until I spot Brielle standing with Mr. Rogers.

Her hair is up in a messy bun on top of her head, and she wears an oversized hoodie over a pair of leggings that hide her tiny frame. She looks so normal standing there that I once again wonder why my father is so hell bent on having her killed. Was there something special about her, or was he threatened by her? I didn’t know, but I intended to find out.

Plastering a smile on my face, I move forward, throwing an arm around her shoulders while Mr. Rogers watches us with an unreadable expression.

“Morning,” I chirp, keeping my voice light. “Has anyone told you that even when you’re not made out, you’re beautiful? I continue, turning my entire attention to Brielle.
