KAREN ANDERSON

"Sis! Wake up!"

I heard my sister's voice in my dream. But It sounded too close. Too real to be just a dream.

I rolled away, away from the sound. But it came again. This time, closer than the first time.

Then I felt something spank my body and my eyes fluttered open from the sudden pain.

"Lily?" I mumbled, staring up at the brown eyes before me.

"Do you know what the time is right now?" She asked with a deliberate frown.

I rubbed my eyes. I still wanted to sleep. My eyes felt heavy. It was as though I had just shut my eyes to sleep only to be woken up.

"Time? Why?"

She sighed exasperatedly. "It's almost 8:00am. Aren't you going to work today? Big sis, don't tell me you have been fired?" She added with a suspicious frown.

Work?

"Work!" I jumped up from the bed.

"Shit! How did I oversleep…"

I dashed into the bathroom and turned on the shower and began to bathe.

"I did the chores and helped dad take his bath and eat. Eat something before you leave for work! I'm going to school…"

"Lily, wait!" I yelled from the bathroom. I unhung the towel and dashed out of the washroom again, foams of soap all over my body.

"Here, take this and get some snacks."

I squeezed some notes into her palms and dashed back into the bathroom again.

Moments later I heard the door shut and I knew Lily had left for school. I continued my bathing which didn't last for more than another minute.

I stared at the two outfits that lay on the bed.

One a dress and the other a chiffon long sleeved shirt with palazzo trousers to match.

"Just pick anyone idiot. It wasn't like what you wear mattered at work…" I murmured as I quickly grabbed the dress and wore it. I picked my handbag and slipped my feet into one of my stiletto heels.

I stood before the mirror and looked at the reflection of myself.

When I work, none of what I was wearing would still be on me. None of it really mattered. Well, except my underwear.

I shrugged and started out of the room.

Father was rolling his wheelchair out of his room as I walked out. His face broke into a grin when he saw me. "Did you lose track of time? It's unlike you to oversleep. Is something going on?" he said.

"Did you sleep well, dad? How is your leg? Any pain anywhere?" I asked, lightly ignoring his question as I scooped some milk into a cup.

He sighed. "Well, it's the same. I slept and I woke up. That's all that matters." He said, still smiling.

I was looking at him but then I quickly tore my eyes and turned away. When has he ever said he didn't sleep well? Even if he didn't, he would never say. But I knew it all. I knew how much pain he was in each day. And I wished I could take it all away. All his pain.

The thought of how close I almost got rid of one of the debts crossed my mind.

"That snob…" I cussed under my breath.

Well, I couldn't blame him much. No matter how much I thought about it, that was a crazy thing I did. Any sensible man would have been mad about it.

I sighed and shook my head.

I drank hurriedly from the glass of milk and stuffed my mouth with the bacon and scrambled eggs Lily made.

My phone beeped signifying a new message. With my right hand clutching onto my glass of milk, I dug my left hand into my handbag and retrieved my phone.

"Pay up your father's debt. You have three days."

I felt a weight around my chest, so heavy I could neither breath nor think for a split second.

My palms suddenly felt wet around the handle of my glass and I lowered the glass down hurriedly.

"Karen? Are you okay?" Dad asked me.

"Uh… yes. Dad, did you say you needed something?"

"No, I don't need anything but.. Karen, is there something going on? Did those men come by?"

Dad's eyes looked downcast. He looked away, withdrawn.

"It's all my fault… It's all my fault…" he muttered with shaking lips.

"No! Dad, I told you to stop worrying about them. I will take care of them. Okay?"

He nodded quietly and forced a smile.

I downed the last of my milk and shoved the remaining scrambled eggs into my mouth.

"Take it easy so it doesn't choke you," Dad said.

"Mm-mh," I nodded as I lifted the dishes and took them to the kitchen.

"Leave the dishes, I will do them." Dad called from the dining room.

"Lily will take care of it. Get some rest, dad and call me if you need anything. Okay?"

I didn't look to see if my father had nodded or not.

It wouldn't have made a difference anyways. He would still go on and wash the dishes before Lily got back from school sometimes. He said it was part of the way he used to stay sane when left all alone in the house.

"Dad, I'm going. Bye!" I pecked his cheeks lightly and dashed out of the house.

"Shit!!"

I glanced at my watch and it was way past 9am.

It was my first time getting to work late since Mr. Hendricks took me in. He had clearly told me to ensure I got to work before 9am.

He had told me he was going against the rules employing me as he was only meant to employ elderly married ladies. He never told me why and I thought I would be intruding if I asked and so I never asked.

I saw a taxi drop off a passenger and flagged it down.

At exactly 9:50am, I arrived at the Adams Mansion.

The enormous building stared right at me as I dropped off the taxi. I had the man swipe my card and handed it back to me before I proceeded into the house.

"You are late," Urn said as he held open the gate for me.

"I know. Is Mr Hendricks in?" I handed him my gate pass. He scanned it at the gate pass scanner and looked at it before he handed it back to me. He had seen it a good number of times yet each time I handed him the gate pass he looked at it as if he was seeing it for the first time.

He nodded affirmatively and let me walk through.

The walk from the gate down to the main house was a long walk.

As I walked, briskly, I glanced at my watch hoping there was a way I could freeze the damn thing from moving anymore.

"Phew!" I heaved in relief the moment I stepped into the servants' building. I quickly changed into my servant's clothes and went off to do my work.

"Why are you late today?" Caro, the elderly servant asked. She turned off the vacuum cleaner she was holding and faced me.

I clasped my hands together, twisting my nails and lost on what to say.

"I'm sorry…"

She frowned. "Get to work immediately. You don't want Mr Hendricks finding out you just signed in to work."

"Thank you, Mrs Caro. I will not be late again." I said with determination surging through me.

I was going to ask her if by any chance Mr Hendricks had asked of me but she had already disappeared into the hallway by the time I looked again.

I shrugged and got to work.

I was cleaning when Mrs Rhoda walked up to me.

"My dear Karen, please may I ask you for a favour?"

I stopped cleaning and turned to face her. Her face didn't look good.

"Mrs Rhoda, is there a problem?" I inquired.

"I'm sorry, but I have no one else to ask…" her voice strained off.

I stared down at her hands. Her fingers shook.

I reached and held them.

"Tell me, what is wrong?"

"My son… my son has been taken in by the police…" she broke into tears.

I opened my mouth to speak but words refused to come out. I had absolutely no idea what to say.

She sobbed and I let her, only gently patting her.

"It's going to be fine. He will come out safely."

"Help me… can you help me clean the young Master's room?"

"Huh? The young Master's room?"

She nodded, sniffing.

"I know I should tell Mr Hendrickd but I can't…"

I stared at her, speechless. I understood her predicament but how could she ask me to clean the young Master's room?

I was supposed to never be near the room of the young master. Mr Hendricks had sternly warned me to stay off there. All I ever knew about him was his name, Jay Adams, Mr Hendricks' grandson. I heard he was stinkingly rich and owned a large business enterprise but I had never seen his face nor what he looked like.

I didn't care about all of that. I only cared about the money. Mr Hendricks promised to pay me well and I had only been working there barely a month.

"But…"

"Please… help me. I must go to my son now. You don't have to worry about anything. The Young Master's is never home by this time. He must have left for work already. You only have to clean and leave."

Her pleading eyes bore into me.

"You… you may go…" I stuttered, feeling almost as if her wet hopeful eyes would pierce my skin.

"Thank you so much! I will remember this… thank you Karen!" She gabbled as she dashed off.

I sighed. Should I inform Mr Hendricks? What if he found out?

Then Mrs Caro would be in trouble. And I, too. It was a risk I shouldn't take.

I took a deep breath before I started for the Young Master's room.

I tapped lightly on the door. Mrs Caro had told me the young Master wouldn't be around but it was my habit… knocking before I step into any room.

KAREN'S POV Arriving at Denva after one month of being away felt like I had been away for so long. Like I was stepping in a new place. Maybe it was just that part of me that was feeling a bit refreshed. I got out of the long bus dragging my echolac along. He got what he deserved. As I sat in the visitor seat waiting for them to bring Jessica out, I imagined me being the one on the other side. • Claiming the Billionaires Frosty Heart    GET MARRIED

A MONTH LATERJay pulled up in the empty space of Anderson ‘s front yard which had turned to become his personal parking space in the last month. He had just opened the car door to step down when the frontage of the house opened and both Lily and Mr Anderson poked their heads out. He didn't need them to speak to see the magnitude of disappointment in their eyes. Of course he knew they would rather have Karen be the one appearing in front of the house and not him. And he also knew they always ran out to check each time a car pulled up in front of the house in the hope that it was Karen. They might likely not know because he never showed it but he missed her more than he could describe. He sighed and his teeth grinded in his mouth as he finally stepped down. “Hello, Mr Anderson,” he greeted wearing the smile he had learned to wear in the last month. Mr Anderson, like he always had done, took his hand into a firm shake and welcomed him inside. Mr Anderson offered him his usual kol

WRITER'S POV“You…how…what are you doing here?” Margaret waved a hand as she walked in majestically. “Hello fiancé.” Collins gaped in shock. slowly everything began to make sense. “What did you do to me?” He snarled. “Oh, come on, shouldn’t you say Hi to your fiance first?”“What did you fuvking do to me!”Detective Defoe ordered that Zach and Hunter be taken away from the room leaving only Collins and Margaret. Collins was still clenching and fuming. “You have been spiking my drinks…you are the cause of all this…”“Like how you and your friends have been doing to those innocent girls? Oh, common' you don't think I can stoop to that level now do you.”No matter how much Collins reasoned it, there was no other explanation as to how drugs were detected in his blood. Either detective Defoe tampered with the original results or it was the devil before him. “What exactly did I do to you? Why are you out to get me? Why! Why! No matter how I think about it, I have not offended you in any

WRITER'S POV Jay spoke to the lawyer in charge of Karen's case. What the lawyer told him worried him. Karen risked being detained in the holding cell after twenty four hours. He had already hired a private investigator to investigate the case. His eyes appeared weary. He had not had a moment of rest ever since Karen was taken in. Adams group needed him but Karen needed him too. Against Hugo's wishes, he had opted to stay back in the police station while he let him hold the forte back at the company. Even though Karen sent him away, he had refused to leave. He knew she was upset at him and he completely understood. All he wanted more than anything was to get her out of here. Later he spoke to the officer to let him speak to Karen again. To his relief, Karen permitted. “I spoke to your lawyer,” he said when they were given privacy. “What did he say?”“It's more difficult than we thought. The hitman maintains you sent him. We need solid evidence to disprove his claim and I asked t

WRITER'S POV “Your hands at the back of your head!”Zach's gleeful laughter was booming in the room when the door burst open and a team of policemen barged in. Instantly it seized. Pistols aimed at their faces.Alarmed, Collins sat up. Hunter and Zach frightfully pushed away the girl who looked half dead from the drugs she had been made to shove down. “Who called the cops?” Collins gritted, shooting glares at Zach and Hunter. “We should be asking you that!” Zach slammed back.“Your hands at the back of your head!” The officer repeated his warning. Collins could feel his shirt soak with sudden perspiration as he looked around in utmost disbelief and fear inside. He had been arrested for a lot of things but had never been caught right in the act and why in this place of all places. “Shit!”Detective Defoe stepped forward, a victorious smirk lingering in his lip. “Is there a need for us to read your Miranda rights…this wouldn't be your first rodeo,” he said and pressed the cuff firml

  • Claiming the Billionaires Frosty Heart    MIX UP. FUN.

WRITER'S POV A FEW HOURS AGO BEFORE KAREN'S ARREST “What!” Jessica's yelp and her palm finding Craig's face happened in quick succession. “Say it again. What did you just say?”Craig’s jaw grinded. It pained him how he had been foolish to want to accept the challenge of tolerating a spoiled brat. Now he was too deep into the shit to take a step back. “It was Miss Tina that was shot. The hit man mistook her for miss Karen as she saw her coming out of Miss Karen's house.”“Simple job! Just a simple thing to do. Useless people! Can't get anything done right.” Then she spun at Craig, “You brought that idiot to me. You told me he was skilled. What happened? He couldn't take care of one person, just one person! He has been caught and he shot the wrong person. Who did you fuvking bring to me!”She stalked to the wine rack to grab a drink, each step she took fueled by barely contained fury. She had to do something before the man said a word to the police. She had to do something. She had

  • Claiming the Billionaires Frosty Heart    NUMB

KAREN'S POV From learning that my friend got shot to hearing the worst news of my life. My friend of many years had wanted me dead because she wanted my man. I couldn't move in my seat. I couldn't, even if I wanted to. I shut my eyes hoping to wake up and find out that everything was all a nightmare until I felt my hand being grabbed and the cold metals clasping my wrist. Maybe it was because I was already numb of any feelings at all that I didn’t feel a pain as the thing locked my arms together. As I was being cuffed, I heard Jay try to speak to one of the officers. Didn't make out his exact words nor the officer’s response but soon they started to take me away. Down the hallway, the pitiful and judgemental gazes of people washed me head to toes. I followed humbly as they led me outside. “I'm coming to the station with her,” I heard Jay say to the officers as they pushed me into the hilux. “No. You don't need to. Officers let's go,” I refused. The last thing I wanted was to wa

WRITER'S POV“What’s wrong?”Jay asked frozen Karen. Karen didn't move. Her hand dropped lifelessly beside her. Every bit of colour was drained from her face as she struggled to process what she had just heard.“I’m sorry, but I have to leave now,” she mumbled absentmindedly and her legs broke into a run. “Wait, Karen!” Jay rushed and grabbed her arm.“You are going the wrong way,” he said. Karen looked and saw she was heading towards the back of the building. She let out a shuddering breath. “I have to go…”“Please, tell me. What's wrong?” Jay demanded softly. “Tina was shot in front of my house,” Karen murmured. “Shot? How…”“I need to leave now. I need to go to her…Tina needs me…” Maybe this was the answer she needed. Tina was more than a best friend. She was her family and she would not have to be made to either choose her or not in order to be with a man. If there was one person who had always been by her side and she would never want to lose, it was Tina. “Jay, about what y

  • Claiming the Billionaires Frosty Heart    TOUGH CHOICE

KAREN'S POV It was one of the fewest times I ever wished twenty four hours didn't have to end so quickly. After the exhilarating night, it would have been exhausting if I had to wake up early the next day for work or anything at all. It was already mid day by the time my eyes saw daylight. It was the warm light rays that woke me up. The window, although still closed, allowed a generous trail of sun rays trickling inside. Jay was nowhere to be found. Thinking he would be somewhere in the suite, I called out to him but no response.Something in me kicked. I had seen a similar scenario. Like those times when a man brought his lover for a vacation only for the woman to learn it was actually supposed to be their last time together. Stepping outside the suite and I was welcomed by the workers going about their duties with the nice smell of food and fresheners. I walked up to one of them. “Hello. Excuse me…have you seen a man…”“Yes. He is somewhere around. How about you sit in the wa
