Chapter 7

ผู้เขียน: Jojo
"Fiona... I'm sorry. I really don't know why Joe went down to the morgue and somehow got himself locked inside. I was only joking when I told him I'd left his things there for him to find. I never thought he'd actually go."

Xavier's voice was filled with anxiety.

"Now the police are saying I could be charged with unlawfully confining Joe in the morgue. What am I supposed to do?"

There was a brief silence before Fiona answered in a low voice.

"I already spoke to the police as his family and told them we don't intend to press the matter. You'll be fine. Don't be afraid."

Joe lay on the cold table inside the morgue, listening to their conversation through the door.

His heart felt like it was being ripped apart.

Xavier had nearly gotten him killed in this freezing morgue, and Fiona had simply decided to let him off the hook?

Rage surged through him.

Joe grabbed a glass medicine bottle someone had left nearby and, using what little strength he had left, hurled it at the door.

The door opened soon afterward.

Fiona walked in with Xavier.

The moment she saw Joe's pale face, her brows drew together.

Joe struggled upright and stared directly at her.

"He locked me in here and almost froze me to death, and you told the police to let it go?"

Something complicated flickered through Fiona's eyes as she took in his condition, but she still defended Xavier.

"Joe, Xavier was just being immature. He thought he was playing a joke on you. He didn't expect you to actually take him seriously."

"A joke?"

Joe let out a cold laugh.

"You know me, Fiona. I'm not letting this go."

Fiona studied his cold, stubborn expression and realized he was truly furious this time.

She rubbed her brow.

"Fine. What do you want?"

Joe didn't answer her.

Instead, he turned to the soldier standing nearby.

"Get me a forty-five-pound weighted vest and some ankle weights."

The soldier hesitated and looked at Fiona.

She nodded.

Before long, the equipment was brought over.

Joe led them downstairs to the hospital's outdoor track and pointed at the gear.

"You."

He looked at Xavier.

"Put that on and run six miles. Finish the run, and we're even."

"What?"

Xavier stared at him in disbelief before turning helplessly to Fiona.

"Fiona, I can't do that. You know what kind of shape I'm in. The doctors told me I'm not supposed to do strenuous exercise."

Fiona immediately turned to Joe.

"Joe, enough. You know about Xavier's condition. Making him do this could kill him."

"And when he locked me in a morgue, did he stop to wonder whether that might kill me?"

Xavier looked at the weighted gear, his face turning white and his eyes filling with tears.

Finally, Fiona drew a deep breath.

She took off her jacket and began fastening the weighted vest and ankle weights onto herself.

"Fine. If this is what you insist on, I'll do it for him."

"Fiona, no! You're still injured!" Xavier cried.

"I'm fine."

Her voice was calm, as though it were nothing worth mentioning.

Joe stared at her.

She was really willing to go this far for Xavier.

It felt as if something had pierced straight through his heart.

So she really loved him that much.

Once the weights were secured, Fiona looked at Joe, exhaustion and warning in her eyes.

"I'll run in his place. Once I'm done, I expect you to leave Xavier alone."

Joe said nothing.

He merely stared coldly at her.

Fiona turned toward the track.

But the instant her back was turned, Joe suddenly grabbed Xavier and dragged him forward.

Then, using every ounce of strength he had, he kicked him straight into the partially frozen pond behind the hospital.

"Ah!"

Caught completely off guard, Xavier plunged into the freezing water.

Fiona spun around at the scream.

Her expression changed instantly when she saw what had happened.

"Joe Kingston! What the hell are you doing?"

Joe stood at the edge of the pond and looked at her, his expression cold and resolute.

"He liked the freezing morgue so much, I figured he could see how he liked an ice bath."

Fury flashed in Fiona's eyes.

But she had no time to confront him.

She immediately jumped into the icy water.

In her rush, her elbow slammed hard into Joe as she went past him.

Joe wasn't prepared for the impact.

He staggered backward several steps before the back of his head struck a large landscaping rock with a sickening thud.

Pain exploded through his skull.

Warm blood immediately began pouring from the back of his head, staining the cold stone beneath him.

His vision flickered in and out.

Through the darkness closing in around him, he watched Fiona swim desperately toward Xavier.

She carefully pulled him into her arms, calling his name over and over in panic.

She never once noticed Joe on the shore, bleeding heavily from the head.

Clenching his teeth, Joe pressed a hand against the wound.

Despite the pain and dizziness, he forced himself to his feet.

Then, one unsteady step at a time, he turned and walked away.

Later, he ended up in the ER and needed seven stitches.

As a nurse bandaged his head, she sighed.

"How did you manage to hurt yourself this badly? Where's Major General Spencer?"

Joe closed his eyes.

He didn't answer.

Even while he remained in the hospital, he could hear the nurses whispering about Fiona and Xavier.

About how Fiona barely left Xavier's side after he developed a fever from falling into the freezing water.

About how gentle and attentive she was with him.

Joe listened without reacting.

His heart had gone completely numb.

He couldn't even cry anymore.

He discharged himself before the stitches were even removed.

Over the next few days, he quietly packed up his belongings at home, one by one.

He was getting ready to leave for good.

  • Clear Skies Without You   Chapter 30

The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered."Hello?"Joe's voice was calm, with the same slightly lazy quality Fiona remembered so well. Her throat closed instantly.A thousand things she'd wanted to say crowded into her chest, but in the end, only a few hoarse, broken words came out."Joe, it's me."Her voice was almost a sob."I saw the article. You look happy."She swallowed hard."I'm glad you're doing well."A pause."I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence filled the line.It lasted so long that Fiona thought he was going to hang up on her again. Then she heard Joe sigh softly. When he spoke, his voice was calm. There was no anger in it.No hatred.Only the distant peace of someone who had truly moved on."Fiona, it's all in the past now."Fiona's breath caught."I forgive you."Her fingers tightened around the phone."Not for you. For myself. I needed to let go so I could really move on with my life."His voice remained gentle but d

Fiona returned to the house that had now completely lost its master and locked herself inside the dark bedroom. She drew every curtain, shutting out all light and sound from the outside world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The air reeked of alcohol and despair.Fiona sat on the floor with her back against the bed, clutching an old candid photo of Joe from his younger days in Hemsouth City. The picture had already begun to yellow with age.Beside her sat a small recorder. It played the same short clip over and over, a recording that had accidentally captured Joe humming to himself one day when he'd been in a particularly good mood at home. His voice was clear and slightly lazy. Now, every note cut into her like a blade.Sometimes Fiona would let out a quiet, almost deranged laugh.Other times, she'd bury her face in her knees and let out muffled sobs like a wounded animal. When the aides brought her food, she angrily swept everything onto the floor. She stared in

Fiona rushed back to the house as soon as she'd finished dealing with an urgent military matter. All the way home, she clung to one impossible hope.Maybe the baby would soften Joe eventually.Maybe this new bond between them meant their relationship wasn't completely beyond saving. But when she pushed open the front door, she was greeted by a deathly silence. The house was empty.Even emptier than the last time he'd left.Every one of Joe's personal belongings was gone again. On the coffee table sat only a velvet jewelry case and a folded piece of paper.Fiona's heart dropped.A terrible sense of dread seized her at the same moment a sharp pain twisted through her abdomen. With trembling hands, she picked up the paper. It was a record showing that abortion medication had been collected from by a private clinic. The date was yesterday.Under the recipient's name were two words:Joe Kingston.Joe had secretly slipped abortion medication into something she'd consumed. He

After the initial shock wore off, something Fiona didn't dare hope for began to flicker deep inside her.A tiny spark of hope.A baby. Her and Joe's baby.It was a new bond between them. One that could never truly be erased.Maybe with this baby, Joe wouldn't be so determined to leave her.Maybe there was still the smallest chance she could win him back.Fiona cautiously looked toward him.But the moment she met Joe's eyes, that fragile hope shattered. His gaze was cold, filled with disgust and absolute resolve."Get an abortion."Joe's voice was flat and icy."I won't let you have this baby."Fiona felt as though an invisible hand had closed around her heart. She could barely breathe. She rushed over and crouched in front of him, reaching for his hand."Joe, please! Don't!"Her voice trembled with a desperation he'd never heard from her before."This is our baby! I was wrong. Everything was my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want. But the baby didn't do anythin

Fiona looked into his eyes. There was no hesitation in them. No lingering attachment. Only absolute determination to leave her.Something inside her finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed her.She grabbed Joe by the wrist.Ignoring his struggles and furious protests, she dragged him up to the rooftop. The setting sun had painted the sky a haunting shade of bloodred.Fiona pulled Joe toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the thin railing was a drop of several stories. She clutched his arm tightly, her eyes bloodshot. Her voice trembled with unbearable pain and madness, half threat and half genuine despair."Joe, if you really leave... if you actually walk away from me..."She pointed over the edge, her eyes wild."I'll jump!"If me dying will make you hate me less, if it'll make you feel even a little better, I'll do it right now!"Her voice shook."You think I won't?"Fiona had Joe trapped against the railing, his body dangerously close to the edge as the wind whi

  • Clear Skies Without You   Chapter 25

Fiona's expression darkened instantly. Her eyes turned frighteningly cold. She barely spared Xavier a glance before barking an order at the aides behind her."Get him out of here. And from now on, he doesn't set foot on this property without my permission."The aides immediately stepped forward. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Xavier and moved to escort him out.Xavier's eyes widened in disbelief."Fiona! How can you treat me like this? Have you forgotten what we used to...""Xavier."Fiona cut him off. There wasn't a trace of warmth in her voice. Her icy gaze settled on him."For the sake of what we once had, I promised to make sure you had access to treatment until you recovered. That's the last kindness you'll ever get from me."She paused, and her voice turned even colder."But if you ever come here and bother Joe again, if you cross that line one more time, don't expect me to honor even that."Her eyes hardened."After that, you're on your own."Th
