Chapter 8

ผู้เขียน: Jojo
Fiona finally came home that day.

The moment she saw several suitcases sitting in the living room, her brows drew together.

She walked up behind Joe, who was sorting through a stack of books, and wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"Why are you packing?"

There was a subtle tension in her voice.

Joe stiffened.

He didn't turn around or answer. He simply kept packing.

Fiona turned him around to face her.

"Are you still angry? Xavier was wrong to lock you in the morgue, but you kicked him into a freezing lake. He got sick and spent days recovering too. Can't we put this behind us?"

She softened her tone.

"It's your birthday. I planned a party for you at the officers' club. You've always liked a good party, haven't you? Come with me."

Joe hadn't properly celebrated his birthday in years, not since his mother died.

It was Fiona who had made him feel cared for again.

But now, everything she did for him only left him exhausted.

"I don't want to go."

He lowered his eyes, his voice flat.

"Why are you so stubborn this time?" Fiona coaxed patiently. "I invited a lot of your friends. They're already there. Come on. Don't keep everyone waiting."

Half coaxing and half insisting, she took him to the party anyway.

And she had gone all out.

There were flowers, music, and tables full of food. Gifts were piled high.

Fiona had even pulled some strings to bring in one of Joe's favorite bands to perform live.

There was only one thing that ruined the entire evening.

Xavier was there too.

Dressed in a crisp white shirt, he sat quietly in a corner, looking as frail as ever.

But every so often, his eyes drifted toward Joe with a subtle hint of provocation.

Joe couldn't be bothered with him.

A few of his friends, however, gathered around Joe and lowered their voices.

"So that's Xavier Blake? The guy Fiona's really in love with? He doesn't look like anything special. How the hell is he better than you?"

"Seriously. Fiona must be blind. She's got you, and she's still hung up on that guy?"

Joe listened without responding.

What did it matter if he was better?

When someone was in love, none of that mattered.

Soon, it was time for the cake.

A huge three-tier birthday cake was wheeled out, covered in elegant candles.

As everyone cheered him on, Joe closed his eyes and made a wish without giving it much thought.

The moment he opened them again, a loud crash came from across the room, followed by startled cries.

Someone had knocked over the champagne tower.

Joe turned toward the commotion.

Xavier was sitting on the floor, while several of Joe's friends stood around him, visibly furious.

Joe frowned and started toward them.

But Fiona was faster.

She rushed over, carefully helped Xavier to his feet, and immediately moved him behind her protectively.

"What happened?"

Xavier's eyes instantly reddened.

"They... they accused me of stealing the birthday gift they brought for Joe. They wanted to search me, but I refused, so they tried to do it by force."

His voice trembled.

"Then somehow... they actually found it in my bag. But I swear I didn't take it. I don't know how it got there."

He swallowed.

"Then they started insulting me and shoving me around. That's how the champagne tower got knocked over."

"That's bullshit!" one of Joe's friends snapped, his face red with anger. "We saw you put it in your own bag! It fell out, and that's why we confronted you. We barely said two words before you threw yourself into the champagne tower and started putting on this whole act!"

"Enough."

Fiona cut him off coldly.

Her sharp gaze swept over Joe's friends.

"Apologize to Xavier."

"What?"

His friend stared at her in disbelief.

"He stole something, and you want us to apologize to him?"

"Because I believe Xavier's version of what happened."

Fiona's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.

Anger immediately surged through Joe.

He strode over and stepped in front of his friends, shielding them behind him as he faced Fiona.

"Well, I believe my friends. They wouldn't accuse someone of stealing for no reason."

His eyes hardened.

"So no. We're not apologizing."

Fiona's expression darkened at the sight of Joe openly taking their side.

She stared at him for a long moment before speaking coldly.

"Xavier already has things far more valuable than any of those gifts. He has no reason to steal them."

The words stabbed straight into Joe's heart.

Her meaning couldn't have been clearer.

She knew Xavier had better, more expensive things because she'd been the one giving them to him.

It was another reminder of just how close they'd once been.

Another reason she trusted him without question.

Joe looked at Xavier.

For a split second, he caught the smug satisfaction in the other man's eyes.

And suddenly, he understood.

Maybe Xavier had never cared about stealing anything in the first place.

He'd wanted exactly this.

Joe and his friends on one side.

Fiona and Xavier on the other.

He'd deliberately created a situation that forced Fiona to choose sides.

And she'd chosen his.

Again.

"Apologize," Fiona repeated, impatience creeping into her voice.

"Not happening."

Joe refused to budge.

Fiona finally lost her patience.

She stopped looking at Joe and turned directly to the soldiers standing nearby.

"Take these men away for causing a disturbance and making false accusations. Twenty strikes each."

Her expression remained cold.

"Afterward, contact their families and ask their parents whether they need the military to discipline their sons for them."

Joe's eyes widened in shock and fury.

"Fiona Spencer, don't you dare!"

But Fiona acted as though she hadn't heard him.

She bent down, swept Xavier into her arms, and carried him away.

No matter how many times Joe shouted after her, she never once looked back.

The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered."Hello?"Joe's voice was calm, with the same slightly lazy quality Fiona remembered so well. Her throat closed instantly.A thousand things she'd wanted to say crowded into her chest, but in the end, only a few hoarse, broken words came out."Joe, it's me."Her voice was almost a sob."I saw the article. You look happy."She swallowed hard."I'm glad you're doing well."A pause."I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence filled the line.It lasted so long that Fiona thought he was going to hang up on her again. Then she heard Joe sigh softly. When he spoke, his voice was calm. There was no anger in it.No hatred.Only the distant peace of someone who had truly moved on."Fiona, it's all in the past now."Fiona's breath caught."I forgive you."Her fingers tightened around the phone."Not for you. For myself. I needed to let go so I could really move on with my life."His voice remained gentle but d

Fiona returned to the house that had now completely lost its master and locked herself inside the dark bedroom. She drew every curtain, shutting out all light and sound from the outside world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The air reeked of alcohol and despair.Fiona sat on the floor with her back against the bed, clutching an old candid photo of Joe from his younger days in Hemsouth City. The picture had already begun to yellow with age.Beside her sat a small recorder. It played the same short clip over and over, a recording that had accidentally captured Joe humming to himself one day when he'd been in a particularly good mood at home. His voice was clear and slightly lazy. Now, every note cut into her like a blade.Sometimes Fiona would let out a quiet, almost deranged laugh.Other times, she'd bury her face in her knees and let out muffled sobs like a wounded animal. When the aides brought her food, she angrily swept everything onto the floor. She stared in

Fiona rushed back to the house as soon as she'd finished dealing with an urgent military matter. All the way home, she clung to one impossible hope.Maybe the baby would soften Joe eventually.Maybe this new bond between them meant their relationship wasn't completely beyond saving. But when she pushed open the front door, she was greeted by a deathly silence. The house was empty.Even emptier than the last time he'd left.Every one of Joe's personal belongings was gone again. On the coffee table sat only a velvet jewelry case and a folded piece of paper.Fiona's heart dropped.A terrible sense of dread seized her at the same moment a sharp pain twisted through her abdomen. With trembling hands, she picked up the paper. It was a record showing that abortion medication had been collected from by a private clinic. The date was yesterday.Under the recipient's name were two words:Joe Kingston.Joe had secretly slipped abortion medication into something she'd consumed. He

After the initial shock wore off, something Fiona didn't dare hope for began to flicker deep inside her.A tiny spark of hope.A baby. Her and Joe's baby.It was a new bond between them. One that could never truly be erased.Maybe with this baby, Joe wouldn't be so determined to leave her.Maybe there was still the smallest chance she could win him back.Fiona cautiously looked toward him.But the moment she met Joe's eyes, that fragile hope shattered. His gaze was cold, filled with disgust and absolute resolve."Get an abortion."Joe's voice was flat and icy."I won't let you have this baby."Fiona felt as though an invisible hand had closed around her heart. She could barely breathe. She rushed over and crouched in front of him, reaching for his hand."Joe, please! Don't!"Her voice trembled with a desperation he'd never heard from her before."This is our baby! I was wrong. Everything was my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want. But the baby didn't do anythin

Fiona looked into his eyes. There was no hesitation in them. No lingering attachment. Only absolute determination to leave her.Something inside her finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed her.She grabbed Joe by the wrist.Ignoring his struggles and furious protests, she dragged him up to the rooftop. The setting sun had painted the sky a haunting shade of bloodred.Fiona pulled Joe toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the thin railing was a drop of several stories. She clutched his arm tightly, her eyes bloodshot. Her voice trembled with unbearable pain and madness, half threat and half genuine despair."Joe, if you really leave... if you actually walk away from me..."She pointed over the edge, her eyes wild."I'll jump!"If me dying will make you hate me less, if it'll make you feel even a little better, I'll do it right now!"Her voice shook."You think I won't?"Fiona had Joe trapped against the railing, his body dangerously close to the edge as the wind whi

Fiona's expression darkened instantly. Her eyes turned frighteningly cold. She barely spared Xavier a glance before barking an order at the aides behind her."Get him out of here. And from now on, he doesn't set foot on this property without my permission."The aides immediately stepped forward. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Xavier and moved to escort him out.Xavier's eyes widened in disbelief."Fiona! How can you treat me like this? Have you forgotten what we used to...""Xavier."Fiona cut him off. There wasn't a trace of warmth in her voice. Her icy gaze settled on him."For the sake of what we once had, I promised to make sure you had access to treatment until you recovered. That's the last kindness you'll ever get from me."She paused, and her voice turned even colder."But if you ever come here and bother Joe again, if you cross that line one more time, don't expect me to honor even that."Her eyes hardened."After that, you're on your own."Th
