Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
"Dual-authorization, dual-lock, continuous monitoring, with parallel electronic and paper logging. Forget about me—even if Mr. Sullivan wanted to sneak out a single vial unnoticed, he couldn't," I explained.

Unfortunately, Sally didn't listen at all.

Or rather, she refused to listen to anything that might shatter her hero complex.

Instead, she escalated things further. She pulled her phone out of her pocket. In front of everyone, she dialed the number I only ever had to deal with during medical disputes.

"Hello, hospital police station? I want to report a crime! Dr. Beresford, the head of cardiothoracic surgery, is using her position to traffic Schedule One controlled anesthetics. The evidence is conclusive!

"Come quickly! She's trying to use an emergency surgery to destroy the evidence right now!"

The moment she said "trafficking", the tension in the corridor became even more suffocating.

I almost laughed out of sheer frustration.

Reselling and trafficking were two completely different things. The former might cost you a job at most. The latter would put you behind bars for the rest of your life.

Two uniformed hospital police officers soon emerged from the elevator.

"Who called the police? What's going on here?"

The lead officer, Jim Brennan, was an older man with a serious face and sharp eyes. He scanned the scene carefully.

Sally immediately acted as if she had found her savior.

She dashed forward, thrusting the crumpled consumables list into Jim's hand.

"This is her! And she still wants to go into the operating room right now. God knows if she's going in to save a patient or to collude with her accomplices to dispose of her contraband!" she said.

Jim frowned after listening to her.

He turned his head, glancing at my half-fastened surgical gown, then up at the bright-red indicator light above the operating room.

Finally, he spoke, "Dr. Beresford, is it? Until we clear this matter up, I'm afraid you can't go in."

Just as he finished speaking, the operating room door behind me clicked open.

A junior nurse leaned halfway out, shouting frantically down the corridor in utter desperation, "Dr. Beresford! Hurry! The patient went into VF! We defibrillated twice without success. The heartbeat is almost a flat line!"

Jim extended a firm arm, blocking my path solidly.

"Dr. Beresford, please stay calm and cooperate with our investigation."

"Stay calm?" I stared at him, my voice turning raspy from sheer suppression.

"For every extra word I speak to you, that patient's chance of survival drops by another percent. He's in ventricular fibrillation right now. His myocardial cells are dying off in clumps. This is irreversible! You're not blocking me! You're killing him!" I screamed.

Right in the middle of this deadlock, a furious shout boomed from the outer edge of the crowd like thunder, "Sally! What kind of madness are you pulling here?"

The vice director, Gareth Wolfe, shoved his way through the crowd. Slightly heavy-set and completely out of breath, he rushed over.

"Who gave you the nerve to block Dr. Beresford at the entrance of the resuscitation room? Do you have any idea that every single second you waste is murder?" he shouted at Sally.

Gareth's arrival turned the tide in an instant.

As the vice director, he held immense authority in the hospital.

Faced with him, the brave front Sally had put on quickly lost its edge.

"Dr. Wolfe, I'm upholding hospital discipline and exposing corruption," she said.

"Corruption? You're a resident who hasn't even been here for three months. What the hell do you know about corruption?"

Gareth was clearly pushed over the edge, dropping his usual composure entirely.

He turned to the two officers and said, "Officers, I guarantee on my position and reputation that Dr. Beresford is completely clean. We just introduced a new surgical protocol, so the anesthesia dosage model is still being adjusted. Every single entry in the books is fully verifiable.

"A life is on the line right now. Please step aside. I'll take full responsibility for everything!"

Seeing the stalemate break, Sally was left with no way out. She snapped her head up and said, "Dr. Wolfe, of course you'd speak up for her!

"You're birds of a feather shielding one another! Do you think this hospital is your personal property?"

She took a deep breath and scanned the crowd. Then she played her trump card.

"Listen, everyone! My name is Sally Sullivan. The hospital director, Carl Sullivan, is my grandfather!"

Carl confessed to everything shortly after being brought in.Leveraging his authority as director, he bypassed the dual-authorization and dual-lock protocol for controlled pharmaceuticals. He submitted fraudulent requisitions for anesthetics under my name, smuggling them through underground channels to private clinics. Those drugs ultimately flowed into unaccredited cosmetic surgery centers and pain clinics, where their price was marked up by more than tenfold. The consumables list Sally brought was indeed stolen from the pharmacy. However, Carl himself was the one who made her stumble upon the accounting discrepancy. He had calculated her zealous sense of justice perfectly. He left a trail on purpose, banking on the fact that she'd spearhead the investigation. His original plan was to get her to expose me in public. Once the narrative took hold, he'd step in as the hospital director to play the righteous hero. That way, he could eliminate me—a cardiothoracic surgery head who po

My voice wasn't loud, but every single word was clear.Everyone's eyes converged on that thin slip of paper.Greg's expression tightened. He immediately instructed his colleague to pull up my historical signature records for an on-the-spot comparison.Meanwhile, Carl broke into a cold sweat. He finally found his voice amidst the horror: "Absolute nonsense! Ella, you're openly defaming the hospital board! Trying to shift the blame based on a groundless signing habit is ridiculous!""You know better than me if it's ridiculous. Across the entire hospital, who else could so easily bypass me to requisition controlled anesthetics in bulk using my name? No one aside from you, a former surgeon promoted to director."You've probably forgotten that when you personally guided me through my very first surgery. You even pointed out my signature with a laugh. You said my final stroke was too heavy, lacking the flair of your upward flick."These words completely broke him.Sally finally sense

"We need you to cooperate with our investigation right now."The sheer pain in my arm left me with no desire to waste a single breath. "I don't have time. My arm needs treatment," I said calmly."Once it's treated, we'll be taking you to the station," Greg replied, taking a clear evidence bag from his colleague behind him and showing it to me."We've already conducted a preliminary search of the cardiothoracic surgery department's drug storage. Out of the 60 vials of anesthesia recorded for March, only 55 empty vials are accounted for."The remaining five are missing without a trace. And most importantly…" he paused, flipping the evidence bag over to reveal a drug request slip carefully sealed inside. On that slip, right beside the serial numbers for those five vials of anesthesia, was the same fluid signature.I knew that signature all too well. I had signed it countless times over the past 16 years.Greg continued, "...every single one of those requisition records bears your p

My voice was flat, without a single ripple of emotion."Don't force it with your fingertips. It'll make the guidewire wobble. Use your wrist. Imagine it's already through the narrowed section. It'll find its own way."On the other side of the glass, Gareth took a deep breath and looked at the monitor again.Under his control, the guidewire probed cautiously toward the almost entirely blocked anterior descending artery. The entire surgical team held their breath."Good. Just like that. Hold it steady," I said, encouraging him softly. My eyes never left the data on the monitor."Blood pressure is starting to drop. Anesthesiologist, start a dopamine infusion. You can pick up the speed a little. We don't have much time to waste."Perhaps the rushing worked. Gareth's movements grew significantly more decisive.Everything was heading in the best possible direction.Outside the observation room, Carl tried to read something from my expression. But he was destined to be disappointed.

Carl's face paled in an instant. He knew the difficulty of this surgery more than anyone. In the entire department of cardiothoracic surgery, no one could take the lead except for me.He practically stumbled as he rushed over to stand beside me. He looked fixedly at my right hand. It was hanging down limply, and twisting at a horrifying, unnatural angle. His lips trembled, yet he couldn't utter a single word.He knew better than anyone what a cardiothoracic surgeon's right hand truly represented. It wasn't just a hand; it was the lifeline for countless patients. And now, that lifeline had been shattered by his beloved granddaughter, using a stainless-steel chair with her own hands."What do we do… What on earth do we do now…" he stammered.Everyone stood frozen in place like statues.Their gazes darted back and forth between my deformed right arm and the tightly shut doors of the operating room. They might not have understood medicine, but they understood the situation clear

"I came forward today because I refuse to sit by while you people turn this hospital into a profit machine, treating defenseless patients as lambs to the slaughter! I'm going to strip away your hypocritical masks on behalf of every single patient kept in the dark!"The moment those words dropped, shock swept through the entire hall.Even Gareth stood frozen in disbelief. The attitudes of the waiting patients and their families shifted completely. The mere fact that the director's own granddaughter was turning on the hospital staff for the patients sealed the deal. It proved beyond a doubt that the hospital was rotting from the inside out.A few agitated family members even began pushing forward. Their bodies formed a human wall that completely blocked my final few steps to the operating room."She's the director's daughter! No wonder she has the guts to speak up!" one of them said."We can't let this corrupt doctor go in there to destroy the evidence!"Sally's earth-shattering
