"Dual-authorization, dual-lock, continuous monitoring, with parallel electronic and paper logging. Forget about me—even if Mr. Sullivan wanted to sneak out a single vial unnoticed, he couldn't," I explained.Unfortunately, Sally didn't listen at all.Or rather, she refused to listen to anything that might shatter her hero complex.Instead, she escalated things further. She pulled her phone out of her pocket. In front of everyone, she dialed the number I only ever had to deal with during medical disputes."Hello, hospital police station? I want to report a crime! Dr. Beresford, the head of cardiothoracic surgery, is using her position to traffic Schedule One controlled anesthetics. The evidence is conclusive!"Come quickly! She's trying to use an emergency surgery to destroy the evidence right now!"The moment she said "trafficking", the tension in the corridor became even more suffocating.I almost laughed out of sheer frustration.Reselling and trafficking were two completely

Carl's face paled in an instant. He knew the difficulty of this surgery more than anyone. In the entire department of cardiothoracic surgery, no one could take the lead except for me.He practically stumbled as he rushed over to stand beside me. He looked fixedly at my right hand. It was hanging down limply, and twisting at a horrifying, unnatural angle. His lips trembled, yet he couldn't utter a single word.He knew better than anyone what a cardiothoracic surgeon's right hand truly represented. It wasn't just a hand; it was the lifeline for countless patients. And now, that lifeline had been shattered by his beloved granddaughter, using a stainless-steel chair with her own hands."What do we do… What on earth do we do now…" he stammered.Everyone stood frozen in place like statues.Their gazes darted back and forth between my deformed right arm and the tightly shut doors of the operating room. They might not have understood medicine, but they understood the situation clear

"We need you to cooperate with our investigation right now."The sheer pain in my arm left me with no desire to waste a single breath. "I don't have time. My arm needs treatment," I said calmly."Once it's treated, we'll be taking you to the station," Greg replied, taking a clear evidence bag from his colleague behind him and showing it to me."We've already conducted a preliminary search of the cardiothoracic surgery department's drug storage. Out of the 60 vials of anesthesia recorded for March, only 55 empty vials are accounted for."The remaining five are missing without a trace. And most importantly…" he paused, flipping the evidence bag over to reveal a drug request slip carefully sealed inside. On that slip, right beside the serial numbers for those five vials of anesthesia, was the same fluid signature.I knew that signature all too well. I had signed it countless times over the past 16 years.Greg continued, "...every single one of those requisition records bears your p

Carl confessed to everything shortly after being brought in.Leveraging his authority as director, he bypassed the dual-authorization and dual-lock protocol for controlled pharmaceuticals. He submitted fraudulent requisitions for anesthetics under my name, smuggling them through underground channels to private clinics. Those drugs ultimately flowed into unaccredited cosmetic surgery centers and pain clinics, where their price was marked up by more than tenfold. The consumables list Sally brought was indeed stolen from the pharmacy. However, Carl himself was the one who made her stumble upon the accounting discrepancy. He had calculated her zealous sense of justice perfectly. He left a trail on purpose, banking on the fact that she'd spearhead the investigation. His original plan was to get her to expose me in public. Once the narrative took hold, he'd step in as the hospital director to play the righteous hero. That way, he could eliminate me—a cardiothoracic surgery head who po
