Alfonso and Gloria stepped into a white Audi car. Alfonso drove the car quickly, leaving La Paradise Hotel. After silence reigned for a moment, Gloria turned her face to Alfonso who suddenly became voiceless.
“So that was Siena Mori? She looked so different tonight. Huh! She must have spent old Adalfo’s money to afford for expensive cosmetics and glamorous dress. But still, she looked so old-fashioned, not worthy to be a billionaire,” Gloria taunted.
Alfonso remained silent. He rubbed his stubbly chin with his right hand, trying to take Siena’s image out of his mind.
“Honey Bear…,” Gloria started whining again. Alfonso reluctantly turned his face to his woman.
“I saw the way you looked at Siena. You’re not drunk, are you? Don’t tell me that you find her beautiful….”
Alfonso chuckled with a cold expression. “Don’t be ridiculous, Cutie Pie…. How can a girl like her look beautiful? You said it correctly, she looked old-fashioned.”
“Then why did you keep looking at her? You suddenly become so quiet, there must be something bothering you,” she countered again.
Gloria knew that Alfonso had dated many beautiful women before her. That was the risk of dating one of the most handsome and successful men in New York. But seeing the way Alfonso stared at Siena tonight, she suddenly felt jealous.
She reminded herself, Siena was nothing comparable to the type of women Alfonso favored. There was no way Alfonso would be fascinated by a girl with dull and unattractive appearance like Siena.
‘My woman sometimes can be troublesome,’ Alfonso complained in his thoughts. He wondered if Gloria would find out that he was imagining other woman.
“When you are face to face with your opponent, you must keep your eye contact all the time, Cutie Pie…. So your opponent won’t think that you’re weak or afraid,” Alfonso made a reason.
Gloria was staring at Alfonso in disbelief. “I just feel…. I don’t know. I had this strange feeling when I saw her. I’m afraid she’s going to be a trouble for us,” she complained.
Alfonso grabbed Gloria’s chin with his right hand. “Hey, don’t let her disturb our night. I’ve promised to take you out for shopping, remember?”
Gloria’s gloomy face suddenly started to glow. She quickly wrapped her arms around his shoulder. “Oh, thanks, Honey Bear… I adore you so much!”
They shared their laughter. The white Audi car sped up to the center of Los Angeles city that never fell asleep.
*****
Half an hour after Alfonso and Gloria left the party, Damien and Siena were leaving the hotel through the back door. The managers and staff of the hotel kept on nodding respectfully to Siena and Damien, and even accompanied them to their car, making Siena feel more uncomfortable.
“Where do you want to go, Siena? Shopping, watching a movie, or just taking a walk? I’ll accompany you,” Damien offered, when they had sat on the back seat of the limousine.
“That’s very kind of you, Damien, but no, thanks…. We’d better go home,” Siena answered. She knew Damien was just trying to comfort her, after Alfonso’s coming bothered her mind.
Siena’s hazel eyes were observing the majestic exterior architecture of La Paradise Hotel. Now, only when there were no more journalists disturbing with their cameras, she could admire Adalfo’s high taste of art.
The hotel looked more like an art museum from the outside. The white stone walls of the hotel were decorated by artistic carvings. Were those kinds of symbol sculptures? Ah, no. Those were two letters of L and P intertwined. L and P should be referring to the initial of the hotel, La Paradise.
Siena almost jumped on her seat. Initial! The first letter of each word!
“Fidel, drive faster! We must go home soon!” she shouted all of a sudden to her private driver, asking him to speed up.
“What’s wrong, Siena?” Damien stared at her with his eyes wide-opened.
“It’s… the message on the testament…!”
*****
As soon as they arrived at home, Siena rushed to her bedroom, opened the drawer of her bedside table, and grabbed out the attachment from Adalfo’s testament, the riddle which she had been trying to solve but to no avail. She took a pencil and a sheet of paper.
Drumbrazil, amaryllis, dahlia, anthurium, lavender, fuschia, orchid, honeysuckle, oleander, tulip, echinacea, lily.
Siena was mumbling to herself, “If I take out the first letter of each word, the result will be… DADALFOHOTEL…!”
So Adalfo was playing code with her! But what was D Adalfo Hotel, another hotel owned by Adalfo?
“Wait a minute…. Something’s wrong. All the other words use the name of flower except Drumbrazil…! Then it must be different. What if I take out every other letter of the word? The first letter is D, the third is U, then B, A, I… Dubai…!” she cried out. “So it means Adalfo Hotel in Dubai…!”
She immediately grabbed her cellphone and searched the name of the hotel on the internet. Was there Adalfo Hotel in Dubai?
“Yes, bingo…!”
Siena shouted cheerfully in her own bedroom. She even span her body on one leg imitating a ballerina, until she suddenly stopped and staggered, just realizing that Damien was already standing in front of her bedroom door!
Damien tried to hide his laugh, as if he had just caught a little girl acting ridiculously. He strode in to Siena’s room. “So, you have solved the first riddle.”
“Have you known the answer this whole time?” Siena accused Damien, staring at him suspiciously.
“No, I haven’t.” Damien shook his head. “Trust me, Siena. I have nothing to do with that. Mister Adalfo made the riddle himself.”
“Then what should I do with this, Adalfo Hotel in Dubai?” she demanded.
Damien thought for a while. “Then you should go there and claim what belongs to you, Siena…”
Dubai? That was so far away. Siena had never been to the Middle East.
Well, she indeed loved travelling. That was once part of her job as a columnist, but she had only travelled around USA and surrounding countries.
Besides, this was nothing like her office job, well-arranged with certain destination. She did not even know what she would have to deal with.
“Don’t worry, Siena, I’ll go with you,” Damien stated with reassuring smile on his face. “We’ll travel together.”
Siena zipped her suitcase closed. Everything she needed was already in the suitcase. Now it was time to prepare her sling bag. All she needed were her purse, passport, private stuffs, and the photograph of Adalfo and her mother which she always brought anywhere with her. In two more hours, Adalfo’s private jet would fly her and Damien to Dubai. Suddenly she heard the sound of footsteps approaching, as if someone was running to her bedroom. Knock! Knock! Siena opened the door. “Lucio? What is it?” The loyal butler was standing in front of her. His face somehow looked pale and sweaty. “Miss Siena…,” he stuttered. She creased her brows. “What happen, Lucio?” “Mister Alfonso Garcia is waiting for you in the living room.” &nbs
Flashback: Two months ago. Siena walked in a hurry along the pavement crowded by pedestrians, and entered a café at her left side. The glass wall café was dominated by soft pastel colors. It was just seven thirty AM, but the café was already crowded by customers enjoying their breakfast. “Welcome to Cheers Café!” a friendly voice greeted. “Good morning, Brian! My order, please…,” Siena replied, flashing a smile to the barista standing behind the counter. The man with oriental look was smiling warmly, forming a soft crease near his eyes. His lean body was just a little bit taller than Siena. His black hair and black irises typical of Asian combined with his chubby face made the man look warm-hearted and friendly. “Green tea latte, less ice, ready to go. You’re late
Flashback: Two months ago. Siena arrived at a tenth floor building locating couple blocks from Cheers Café. Angels Daily office was on the eighth floor of the building. Though it was just a small company, but Siena really enjoyed her job here. She also made a good living. Well, not a luxurious living, but the satisfaction was more valuable than the amount of her salary. “Siena! Hold the door!” A scream was coming from outside, when Siena was already in the lift. Siena immediately pushed the ‘open’ button. A girl at her age ran hastily into the lift, with a backpack on her shoulders, a paper cup in her left hand, and a plastic folder in her right hand. It seemed like she was having a difficult time to bring all her goods. “Thanks, Siena Chan! You’re the best!” the girl greeted, chuckling.
Flashback: A month ago. CRAAACKK!! Alfonso Garcia smashed his own cellphone onto his desk violently. It was not shattered, but at least the screen would be cracked. He was not even bothered anymore. The pain was suffocating him. He felt as if his heart was burning. He had just finished reading the article on Angels Daily column, nothing else but the article about Adalfo Garcia’s life story, his grandfather. He could hardly believe it, why would Adalfo willingly reveal his life story on a media like that? It was just not his grandfather’s common behavior. What made Alfonso enraged the most was Adalfo’s honest confession about how his grandfather had become the reason behind his parents’ separation. This was Adalfo’s confession: “It was I who should be bl
Flashback: A week ago. A black limousine stopped in front of a luxurious house in Beverly Hills. Siena rushed out from the car. Adalfo sent his private driver to pick her up. He wanted to see her immediately. Heart pounding, Siena frantically ran to Adalfo’s bedroom. Lucio said Adalfo had been lying in his bed for the past two days. She knew Adalfo had coronary heart disease, and he had undergone the bypass surgery once. But his condition was getting worse lately. “Grandpa…,” Siena called out, standing in front of Adalfo’s room. Her heart was racing, her chest was moving up and down trying to breathe. Adalfo lay in a jumbo size bed in the middle of the large bedroom. He turned his gaze at Siena. “Hi, Siena…. Come…,” he requested in a weak voice.
The most challenging journey in your life is the journey to find yourself.*****Back to the present time.Siena was sitting with a somber face in Adalfo’s private jet. Alfonso was on another seat, not far from across her seat. But she knew his piercing eyes kept glancing at her several times from the moment they sat, as if he was scrutinizing her.Her cellphone suddenly rang. “Hi, Damien….”“Siena, what are you doing?!” Damien sounded panic. “You can’t go to Dubai with Alfonso! He’s dangerous! I’m heading to the airport now! You must wait for me! Don’t leave without me!” he instructed.Siena glimpsed at Alfonso. He was looking back at her with a mischievous smile on his face.“Damien, I’m sorry. I can’t expla
They had travelled more than half an hour from the glamorous city center of Dubai. Getting further, the environment somehow looked contrast. Instead of luxurious view, factories and simple houses dominated. The black Mercedes Benz stopped in front of a large and tall building, looking more like a simple apartment.“This is the House of Aman,” the driver from Adalfo Hotel informed.Siena turned her gaze out. The building was far from luxurious. It was almost similar to her previous rented apartment, simple and clean. But the barren, hot, and dusty environment surrounding made the building look bleak.Siena opened the car door. But Alfonso did not even move an inch.“You’re not coming?” Siena asked, frowning.“I’d better stay here. It’s too hot outside. Besides, I know there’s nothing worth enough here, just by catching a glimps
A wide grin showed on Alfonso’s face. He really enjoyed having fun by mocking Siena. “It’s easy. Just follow whatever I want. As simple as that,” he spoke nonchalantly.“But what do you want? You can’t just order me to do whatever you like!” Siena growled.Alfonso leaned his body comfortably on the car seat, as the car driving them back to the city center. “Just start with accompanying me around the city of Dubai.”Alfonso was really serious with his words. He instructed their driver to drive them around the city center. As the day getting late, he demanded to visit a grand shopping center full of people. He strode in to a deluxe boutique with Siena tailing from behind. Just in the wink of an eye, a young girl who was the shop assistant served him passionately.“Thanks to you, I don’t even bring any clothes with me. Thus you must pay e
