The next morning, Rafael was up before Adrea. By the time she was moving about, he was already gone. That was not normal. It was the weekend—he usually slept in. But today, he wasn’t home.

She wondered, just for a moment, where he might be. Had he left the house just to get away from her? Or to be with someone else?

As she forced down her breakfast, her phone vibrated. She picked it up—and felt the last shred of her appetite vanish. Another message from Felix.

This time, there was no text. Just a series of images.

Her husband, dressed casually in jeans and a T-shirt, walking hand-in-hand with Belinda. The next image showed them laughing together. That stung more than any kiss would have. He didn’t laugh with her anymore. He didn’t even look at her like that.

Well, at least now she knew where her husband was. No more wondering.

She shoved her plate away and stood up. Her stomach churned. The housekeeper, watchin

Rafael had not been actively avoiding his brother, but he had been hoping to see little of him. Work, however, put them in close proximity. Just the sight of the younger man made Rafael see red. He wanted to renew his shiner now that it had faded with time. But he couldn’t reasonably do that.Even as Felix spoke, Rafael felt his hackles rise. He wanted to jump out of his chair and get on his younger brother. He wanted to be on him and punching his face until it was unrecognisable. Felix had no idea how much control it took for Rafael to be as blank as he was. He had no idea how close he was to having every bone in his face reduced to mush.“So, we settled for the first company,” Felix said. “They have a better, more cohesive budget plan and they have the resources to meet our demands.”Rafael nodded and reluctantly said, “You did good.”Felix smiled at him as if there was no doubt he did.As much as Rafael wanted Felix to be a fuck-up, the man never failed when he set his eyes on some

He checked his phone for the third time and still could not believe it. She had blocked him. Why? Because she was angry with him, or because she still loved Rafael? He hoped she had moved on from his brother. He was not as good as she thought. He was not as clean. He was trying to show her that. Rafael was not an angel. He was taking advantage of her and the Galanis estate. He was not her knight in shining armour. But Felix could be that for her. He could do better by her and be her prince. She just needed to see things under his light. She just needed to be receptive to the narrative that was his reality for her. She was his soulmate. His perfect fit. They clicked. She knew that.So why not lock in and be together forever? Why couldn’t she see that as the ultimate solution? He had heard her talking about starting a family and wanting children soon, and he had panicked. The image of her swollen with his brother’s spawn had nearly driven him crazy. That had been his call to action. He

The game was over. Adrea did not want to go home just yet.Moreau put the cards at the centre of the table and slid out of his seat with panther-like grace. He looked at Aris and said, “See you at the tournament.”Aris nodded and asked, “Still refuse to fly with me?”“I make my own way,” Moreau said as he gave Aris a look Adrea could not decipher. He then looked at Adrea and said, “See you there, Adrea Galanis.”She nodded at him and then watched him stalk out of the room.“Did you bring your papers?” Aris asked her, and she turned her attention back to him.“Yes,” she said, as she began to go through her purse for her passport and driving licence.Once she got them, she extended them to him and then watched him walk towards the door. He paused when he got there and turned to look at her over his shoulder.“Come along,” he said. She nodded and walked towards him. He opened the door and stood aside so that she could walk past him. She hesitated.“I won’t bite,” Aris stated defensively,

There was an ace of spades, a three of clubs, and a six of diamonds on the table. Adrea had what she considered the best card. Doubles. A three of hearts and a three of diamonds. She was keeping her face pleasant. Aris knew something was up. He knew that face. Sanne and Moreau had dropped out of the game. So, it was just her and him.“Bet,” Adrea said as she pushed forward a fairly good number of chips.Aris looked at her and cocked his head. “What do you have that gives you this level of confidence? Would I lose my shirt if this were strip poker?”Sanne and Moreau were watching them both with interest.“I think so,” Adrea did not bother making her voice uncertain. “But why not your shoes first, Aris?”She was never hesitant or uncertain. He would know she was jerking him around… or he would think the strip poker thing was doing things to her. She did not want that.He considered her face and then said, “This is what I was talking about, Moreau.”Adrea looked at Moreau, who was watchi

As they walked into the living room, Adrea immediately took note of the company. Sanne was seated on one of the couches. She had her long red hair in a single braid at the top of her head. She smiled at Adrea as she walked in.“Hi Adrea!” Sanne didn’t waste time greeting her. “Welcome to the team,” she then added with a two-finger salute to Adrea.Adrea smiled at her as she said, “Thanks, Sanne. How are you?”“Never been better,” Sanne replied, and then her blue eyes went to the man who was sitting opposite her. He had twisted his torso so that he could get a better look at Adrea.“Hello,” Adrea said to the man, and he tipped an invisible hat at her, a warm smile on his face.“That’s Moreau,” Aris said to her.“Despite what Aris said,” Sanne interjected, “he’s no protector of virtues.”Aris grinned and Moreau chuckled. Adrea pinked and kept her expression blank. She wasn’t quite sure how to respond to that and so she decided not to.“Why are we here?” she asked instead.“Knights must
