Rafael had not intended to watch Adrea’s game. When he had somehow ended up on the channel the poker match was being broadcast, he had told himself he would change the channel in a minute. But he had not. A minute had compounded into more than an hour.

When the final hands were played out and the audience gasped, he found himself frozen in front of the screen, the remote untouched on the coffee table.

Adrea had looked radiant. Like she belonged on a throne. Her smile when she had flipped her cards, that controlled flick of the wrist, the way her eyes didn't even widen as the royal flush came together — it all hit him like a slow punch to the gut.

This was the version of her he had forgotten existed. Not the careful wife who made polite conversation at social dinners. Not the woman who had gone silent without him noticing. No — this was the Adrea he had seen at those cruises with her father. Fearless. Clever. Alive.

He had found himself leaning forward, elbows on knees, as the camera c

She had, again, made the news. This time due to something that unsettled him. They were linking her to a man. One who was neither him nor his brother. Aris Zervas. Who did not know the man? He was a man who came from generations of wealth and was known for his charismaFelix, of all people, knew how to create a picture that deviated greatly from reality. But it did not help ease the anger he felt from seeing it. She was lowered on her haunches in front of the man Aris Zervas with a hand on his thigh. He was looking at her with something he recognised plain as day in his eyes. He was taken with her. He wanted her.In her eyes there was something that made Felix wary. Something soft. Something he wanted her to only direct at him. There was something crackling between them. He could see it. He was afraid of it. Afraid that she was slipping through his fingers. He was afraid he was losing her all over again. The first time he had felt like this was still fresh in his mind. His brother had

When she got back onto her table, Adrea told herself that she would play more aggressively. As the dealer shuffled the cards while waiting for Chichie to give him the go-ahead to deal the cards, she looked over to where Aris was, and he gave her a subtle nod. She bit back a smile and looked at the table as the dealer began laying down cards. She checked her cards immediately. She had a king and a queen. Both of clubs. High-value cards. A good hand. In this hand, Tracey was the small blind. He laid down the appropriate number of chips, and she laid down double that value. The next player, a man called Calumn LeRoux, folded immediately. This was why no one was out yet. Everyone was playing very safe. She was not going to be part of that everyone now.The next player, Patric, called her bet. Then it was Anika’s turn. She called too. The player after Anika folded. The dealer laid down the flop cards. An ace of clubs, a queen of spades, and a jack of clubs. Adrea bit her lip and then stopp

He was watching her from the sidelines as she picked up a chip from a bag. She got a red chip. Good—Moreau had picked up a white one. They were on different tables. She smiled and then went to one of the two poker tables that had been set up with cameras and lights around them. She had another of her lady’s fans in her hands. She had it closed and was absently but deftly twirling it around her hand as she waited for the other players to join her at her table. She was the first one to get to that table. Moreau’s table already had four people.A young woman fished for a chip and held up another red chip. She nodded and then went to join Adrea. Aris watched as the two women nodded at each other and continued to watch the draws. He was not watching the draws. He was watching her. As if sensing his eyes on her, she turned her head to him and their eyes met. He smiled at her and she smiled back. She could do this. She then turned her head back to the draw where a young man had drawn yet ano

Adrea woke up a little before noon the next day. She washed up and went down, where Mrs Greene had served up brunch.“Good morning,” she said to the woman as she noticed that one plate had been laid down.“Good morning,” the older woman returned cheerily, and then said, “Mr Zervas is down at the pool. He had his breakfast earlier and instructed us to let you sleep.”Adrea smiled at that and had an odd thought. That was something a caring lover would do for his partner.Where did that come from? Was she that starved for care and attention? Rafael had not been a bad husband. He had been busy, but he had tried to do good by her until… Until the Felix incident. She did not want to think about the Felix incident. How had her mind gotten here? She forced herself to get to her meal. Surely stuffing her cake in the muffins Mrs Greene had made for her would wipe the bad mental stink left by the… incident she should not think about. And she was right. Mrs Greene had a talent when it came to goo

The night went relatively well. When it was time to check the chips, Adrea and Moreau were seated in the audience with Aris. The scores came up and Adrea breathed a sigh of relief—she was number five. Moreau was in third place. Sure, she had not beaten him tonight, but she’d held her own. All she had needed to get to the next round was to stay in the top twelve. She was in the top six. Good enough. She was exhausted as it was. She needed to go to the holiday home and rest. The mics had already been removed and they were waiting for the okay. But it did not come. Chichie, who had been presenting the scores in front of the camera, walked over to where Adrea was standing with Aris and Moreau.“I need a quick interview with Moreau and Adrea,” she said to them.Adrea and Moreau nodded at her and followed her to the green screen that had been put up for this purpose. The cameraman fidgeted with his tripod and then nodded to Chichie. The woman smiled at him and then looked at the pair of pla
