On the day I receive my acceptance letter from my dream university, Jaxson Ludlam rents out an entire bar to celebrate with me. During a tipsy round of honest confessions, someone asks him what's the most outrageous thing he has ever done in high school. Leaning back on the couch, Jaxson looks toward Ingrid Rice, who has been sitting silently in the corner all this while. With a soft chuckle, he says, "Well, I guess it's probably taking the blame for someone and getting a detention right before the SAT." The entire room gasps in shock. Even I am stunned. A month before the SAT, Ingrid is caught using the school's computer lab without permission and very nearly got expelled. Jaxson steps forward and claims that he forces her to unlock the lab, taking all the blame himself. I always believe he did it simply because of his sense of responsibility as the class president. Under everyone's curious gaze, Ingrid blushes, and tears brim in her eyes. Jaxson gets up and walks over to shield her from everyone's attention before turning back to me with a reassuring smile. "Mira." Lowering his voice so only I can hear, he gently coaxes me. "If this goes into Ingrid's record, it'll ruin the rest of her life. You're always so understanding. Let's just treat it as doing a good deed for a friend, okay?" Looking at the way he takes it all for granted, I suddenly find the noise in the bar unbearably nauseating. I stand up and slip my acceptance letter back into my bag. "I understand." Meeting his startled eyes, I say, one word at a time, "Let's break up."

Confession Night Turned Into Goodbye Chapter 10
Three years later, I stood in the Wesmuth University physics laboratory. Wearing a white lab coat, I was recording the final set of data."Congratulations, Dr. Hewlett. Your paper has been accepted by a top-tier journal." Zayn walked in carrying a folder, smiling from ear to ear."Congratulations to you too, Professor Sharpe." I smiled back.Over the past three years, I had secured direct admission into a combined master's and Ph.D. program thanks to my outstanding academic performance. Zayn, on the other hand, had become the youngest associate professor at Wesmuth University.Together, we had reached the top of our respective fields.I glanced down at the ring on my left ring finger. Zayn had slipped it onto my finger last month when he proposed to me in the laboratory. It was a simple ring. Engraved on the inside was the journal identification number of the first paper we had ever published together. He had said, "Miranda, I can't weave you a grass ring, but I can give you a f

Jaxson became a complete laughingstock. He gave up his internship at his family business and spent his days wandering around the area near Wesmuth University. He tried to engineer chance encounters with me, but I never gave him so much as another glance. In the blink of an eye, it was the second semester of my sophomore year. The physics competition project that Zayn and I had worked on together won the first prize in a national competition. On the day of the awards ceremony, the sky was overcast, and rain poured relentlessly. Holding my trophy, I walked out of the auditorium beside Zayn. He held a black umbrella, and he angled it slightly toward me.During the ceremony, he had placed the medal representing the highest honor around my neck. Beneath the spotlight, we smiled at each other.Walking side by side through the rain, we discussed the direction of our next research project.Suddenly, Jaxson came stumbling out from the side entrance of the auditorium. He was soaked from h

It was the Wesmuth University orientation gala.As the freshman representative, I stood beneath the spotlight in the grand auditorium, dressed in a formal gown. Calmly and confidently, I read my speech. My voice carried through the microphone across the entire hall."Over the next four years, may we all learn to shut out the noise of the outside world and discover our own irreplaceable value."As my words came to an end, the audience burst into applause. I gave a slight bow and turned to leave the stage. When I reached the dimly lit hallway backstage, I saw Jaxson standing there. He was dressed in a meticulously tailored suit and was holding a large bouquet of red roses. His eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, he slowly walked toward me, taking one careful step at a time.He spoke in a hoarse voice. "Mira, I know everything now. Back then, Ingrid broke the rules in the computer lab on purpose. She just wanted to see if I'd come to her rescue unconditionally. I saw the scre

The words "You disgust me" stabbed straight into Jaxson's heart like a knife. He stared at me in disbelief, his eyes filled with the confusion of someone who no longer recognized the young woman standing before him. In his mind, I had always been gentle and forgiving. As long as he humbled himself just a little, I would always let him off the hook. But now, there was nothing in my eyes except disgust. There wasn't the slightest trace of lingering affection that remained."Mira..." Jaxson murmured my name and tried to step forward again.Zayn had already taken out his phone and dialed campus security. "Hello? I'm right outside Building Six of the women's dormitory. Someone is causing a disturbance here."The moment Jaxson heard those words, his face fell. He clenched his jaw and stared at me for ten full seconds. In the end, he looked utterly defeated. He turned around dejectedly and stumbled out of the campus.Watching his retreating figure, I let out a long sigh of relief."Th
