Chapter 2

작가: Hallsy
My phone vibrated beside my pillow. I opened my eyes and stared blankly at the ceiling.

It was the third day after our breakup. During those three days, I had blocked Jaxson on every social media platform and went to stay at the school's dormitory. He hadn't come looking for me once.

He was convinced I was just throwing a tantrum. He assumed that I'd go back to him and apologize in a few days.

The withdrawal was unbearable. After all, one wouldn't just forget a habit that had stuck around for 18 years.

When I woke up in the morning, I'd instinctively reach for my phone to check for Jaxson's good morning message. Whenever I passed a convenience store, I'd automatically think about buying him a bottle of long black.

Whenever I came across a funny video, my finger would unconsciously drift toward the share button before I suddenly caught myself and smiled bitterly at our chat window.

On the morning of the fourth day, I forced myself out of bed, washed up, got dressed, and headed to the city library to look up some information about Wesmuth University's early admission program.

As I pushed open the rusty iron door of my dorm building, the warm morning breeze rushed toward me. I kept my head down as I walked out.

Suddenly, I bumped into a warm chest.

"You still don't watch where you're going, huh?" A deep, amused voice sounded above my head.

My whole body stiffened.

I looked up to see Jaxson smiling down at me. He was wearing the black shirt I'd bought him and carrying a plastic bag containing steaming hot potato rolls from the famous shop downtown. It was from the one where people had to wait in line for two hours.

"Are you still mad about that night?" Jaxson asked.

He gently pressed the bag of rolls against my cheek, wearing a placating smile.

"I didn't stay with her afterward. I really did have her roommate come pick her up. To make it up to you, I got in line at 5:00 am for these from that famous old shop. Can't you forgive me, please, Mrs. Ludlam?"

By giving a half-hearted concession and using my familiar pet name, he thought he could smooth over the way he'd belittled me that night.

If this had been the old me, I definitely would have given in. But now, the smell wafting from the box of rolls only made my stomach churn.

"Do you not understand plain English?" I asked irritably.

I didn't take them. Instead, I took a step back.

Then, I added, "We've already broken up."

The smile at the corner of his lips froze for a moment, but he quickly recovered.

"Come on, Mira." He sighed, sounding a little helpless. "I know I didn't think things through at the bar that night, and I hurt your feelings. But I was thinking about the bigger picture, wasn't I? We're all classmates."

As he spoke, he pulled an envelope out of his crossbody bag. "To make it up to you, look what I've got."

He opened the envelope and handed it to me.

It was a travel itinerary for a graduation trip to an island. It included not only a detailed schedule but also two first-class plane tickets to Sundale for the following week.

I froze, my eyes sweeping over the place names on the itinerary. It included diving at Centora Island, watching the sunset at Coconut Bay, and even dining at the cliffside restaurant I'd casually mentioned just once.

Every single detail was something I'd once excitedly planned out with him.

"I was always busy with competitions before and neglected you," Jaxson said, looking at me with utmost sincerity.

He promised, "This time, I'll turn off my phone and ignore everyone. I'll spend the whole trip with you. Think of it as making up for not properly celebrating your getting into Wesmuth University, okay?"

Looking at the itinerary, I wavered.

After 18 years together, he knew every one of my weak spots. He knew exactly how to get the biggest compromise from me with the smallest effort.

Two hours in line for a box of potato rolls and one carefully planned itinerary were supposed to make me forget all the favoritism he'd shown another woman.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

My voice sounded a little hoarse as I asked, "Can you really do it? Can you keep your phone off the entire trip and spend the whole time with me only?"

His eyes lit up immediately.

Without the slightest hesitation, he raised his hand and swore, "I promise. I won't break my word."

I stared at him for a moment before taking the itinerary from him. "Fine. I'll see you at the airport next Wednesday."

  • Confession Night Turned Into Goodbye   Chapter 10

Three years later, I stood in the Wesmuth University physics laboratory. Wearing a white lab coat, I was recording the final set of data."Congratulations, Dr. Hewlett. Your paper has been accepted by a top-tier journal." Zayn walked in carrying a folder, smiling from ear to ear."Congratulations to you too, Professor Sharpe." I smiled back.Over the past three years, I had secured direct admission into a combined master's and Ph.D. program thanks to my outstanding academic performance. Zayn, on the other hand, had become the youngest associate professor at Wesmuth University.Together, we had reached the top of our respective fields.I glanced down at the ring on my left ring finger. Zayn had slipped it onto my finger last month when he proposed to me in the laboratory. It was a simple ring. Engraved on the inside was the journal identification number of the first paper we had ever published together. He had said, "Miranda, I can't weave you a grass ring, but I can give you a f

Jaxson became a complete laughingstock. He gave up his internship at his family business and spent his days wandering around the area near Wesmuth University. He tried to engineer chance encounters with me, but I never gave him so much as another glance. In the blink of an eye, it was the second semester of my sophomore year. The physics competition project that Zayn and I had worked on together won the first prize in a national competition. On the day of the awards ceremony, the sky was overcast, and rain poured relentlessly. Holding my trophy, I walked out of the auditorium beside Zayn. He held a black umbrella, and he angled it slightly toward me.During the ceremony, he had placed the medal representing the highest honor around my neck. Beneath the spotlight, we smiled at each other.Walking side by side through the rain, we discussed the direction of our next research project.Suddenly, Jaxson came stumbling out from the side entrance of the auditorium. He was soaked from h

It was the Wesmuth University orientation gala.As the freshman representative, I stood beneath the spotlight in the grand auditorium, dressed in a formal gown. Calmly and confidently, I read my speech. My voice carried through the microphone across the entire hall."Over the next four years, may we all learn to shut out the noise of the outside world and discover our own irreplaceable value."As my words came to an end, the audience burst into applause. I gave a slight bow and turned to leave the stage. When I reached the dimly lit hallway backstage, I saw Jaxson standing there. He was dressed in a meticulously tailored suit and was holding a large bouquet of red roses. His eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, he slowly walked toward me, taking one careful step at a time.He spoke in a hoarse voice. "Mira, I know everything now. Back then, Ingrid broke the rules in the computer lab on purpose. She just wanted to see if I'd come to her rescue unconditionally. I saw the scre

The words "You disgust me" stabbed straight into Jaxson's heart like a knife. He stared at me in disbelief, his eyes filled with the confusion of someone who no longer recognized the young woman standing before him. In his mind, I had always been gentle and forgiving. As long as he humbled himself just a little, I would always let him off the hook. But now, there was nothing in my eyes except disgust. There wasn't the slightest trace of lingering affection that remained."Mira..." Jaxson murmured my name and tried to step forward again.Zayn had already taken out his phone and dialed campus security. "Hello? I'm right outside Building Six of the women's dormitory. Someone is causing a disturbance here."The moment Jaxson heard those words, his face fell. He clenched his jaw and stared at me for ten full seconds. In the end, he looked utterly defeated. He turned around dejectedly and stumbled out of the campus.Watching his retreating figure, I let out a long sigh of relief."Th

Jaxson pounded on the door downstairs for half an hour. He almost drew the attention of the area's security guards.Wearing her pajamas, Tamara stepped onto the balcony. "If you keep harassing me, I'm calling the police!""Tamara, I'm begging you. Please tell me where Mira is," Jaxson said, staring up at the second-floor balcony. "I've realized how much of a jerk I'd been. Just tell me where she is. I'll get down on my knees and apologize to her!"Seeing the once-arrogant scion looking so miserable, Tamara felt immensely satisfied. She looked down at him coldly and said, "It's too late. Mira already left to report to Wesmuth University. She changed all her contact information just to get away from trash like you. Stop bothering her. The least you can do is not disrupt her life. You owe her that much."With that, Tamara shut the balcony door."Wesmuth University..." Jaxson muttered to himself, a look of stubborn determination filling his eyes. That was right—Wesmuth University.

The hotel room was empty. The luggage rack showed no sign that anyone had even touched it.Jaxson frowned. He thought I'd gone for a walk on the beach, so he called me."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy..."His call had been blocked.A flicker of irritation rose inside him. He felt I'd dragged this tantrum on long enough. So, he borrowed one of the hotel staff's phones and called again. The phone rang for a long time before it was finally answered."Hello." My calm voice came through the receiver."I'm already at Sundale. What are you upset about now?" Jaxson grumbled.Suppressing his irritation, he did his best to keep his voice gentle. "Where are you? I'll come find you."There was a two-second silence before I replied in a soft voice, "Jaxson, you made that post saying the storm had passed. So, I wish you nothing but clear skies."His heart lurched as a wave of panic instantly seized him. "What do you mean? Mira, don't scare me...""It's over between us
