Chapter 4

작가: Hallsy
It only took 40 minutes to get from the airport back to the apartment Jaxson and I had shared. Our high school had been far from home. We had rented the apartment together so we could focus on studying.

As I pushed open the door, the motion-sensor light in the entryway flicked on. Its warm glow fell across the shoe cabinet, where two pairs of matching couple's slippers sat side by side.

I walked straight into the bedroom. There, I pulled two suitcases out from under the bed and laid them open on the carpet.

Then, I calmly packed my clothes, books, and laptop.

As I packed, memories of everything we had shared kept flashing before my eyes. A photo of us at an amusement park was still stuck to the refrigerator. On the bookshelf sat the copy of "The Solitude of the Century" that I'd marked, but he had never bothered to open.

Even in the bathroom, our electric toothbrushes still hung side by side.

Everything in the apartment carried a piece of the life we'd once shared. The sweeter those memories were, the more painful reality felt now.

When I opened a drawer in the wardrobe, my hand paused.

Inside lay a gray scarf. It was the same style as the pink scarf around Ingrid's neck at the airport today.

I stared at it for three seconds before letting out a soft laugh.

So, he couldn't even be bothered to choose different gifts. His mass-produced devotion was truly something to behold.

I didn't take it. I put it back exactly where it had been.

Two hours later, both suitcases were packed to the brim.

I looked around the apartment. Half the closet was empty. Half the bookshelf was empty. Half the bottles and toiletries on the bathroom counter were gone as well.

The entire home looked as though half of it had been carved away cleanly.

I walked to the entryway and slipped the matching ring off my finger. I placed it in the center of the shoe cabinet beside the apartment key.

Next to them, I set the cover of the graduation trip itinerary that I'd torn off and brought back from the trash. Every page of the itinerary had been crossed out with a red pen.

On the inside cover, I wrote one final sentence. "May your storms finally come to an end. Jaxson, you're free now."

I took one last look at the place I'd poured my heart into for three years. The lights were still warm, but it was no longer my home.

I closed the door.

The click of the lock cut me off from everything that had come before.

Dragging my suitcases into the elevator, I finally felt the tension that had been holding me together melt away as the doors closed. A tear fell onto the back of my hand without warning.

It was the last tear I would ever shed for those 18 years.

I didn't cry because I couldn't let go. I was just mourning the youth I'd wasted on someone who never deserved it.

After seeing Ingrid off, Jaxson sat down in the airport's VIP lounge and let out a long sigh.

Watching the planes take off outside the window, he felt an overwhelming sense of relief and satisfaction. He had finally gotten rid of the troublemaker.

He snapped a photo of the terminal and posted it to his social media account that was visible only to his close friends.

He wrote, "The storm has finally passed. Now I can give my full attention to what matters."

After posting it, he leaned back on the couch and began planning tomorrow's trip to the island.

Jaxson was sure that I was still angry, but that was fine. Once he got to the island, he'd take me to the cliffside restaurant and take out the diamond ring he'd already prepared.

I loved him so much. All he had to do was sweet-talk me a little, and I would definitely forgive him.

The following evening, Jaxson landed at Fenric Airport of Sundale and headed straight for the reserved ocean-view room.

He pushed open the door and called out, "Mira, I'm here..."

Before he could finish speaking, he froze.

Three years later, I stood in the Wesmuth University physics laboratory. Wearing a white lab coat, I was recording the final set of data."Congratulations, Dr. Hewlett. Your paper has been accepted by a top-tier journal." Zayn walked in carrying a folder, smiling from ear to ear."Congratulations to you too, Professor Sharpe." I smiled back.Over the past three years, I had secured direct admission into a combined master's and Ph.D. program thanks to my outstanding academic performance. Zayn, on the other hand, had become the youngest associate professor at Wesmuth University.Together, we had reached the top of our respective fields.I glanced down at the ring on my left ring finger. Zayn had slipped it onto my finger last month when he proposed to me in the laboratory. It was a simple ring. Engraved on the inside was the journal identification number of the first paper we had ever published together. He had said, "Miranda, I can't weave you a grass ring, but I can give you a f

Jaxson became a complete laughingstock. He gave up his internship at his family business and spent his days wandering around the area near Wesmuth University. He tried to engineer chance encounters with me, but I never gave him so much as another glance. In the blink of an eye, it was the second semester of my sophomore year. The physics competition project that Zayn and I had worked on together won the first prize in a national competition. On the day of the awards ceremony, the sky was overcast, and rain poured relentlessly. Holding my trophy, I walked out of the auditorium beside Zayn. He held a black umbrella, and he angled it slightly toward me.During the ceremony, he had placed the medal representing the highest honor around my neck. Beneath the spotlight, we smiled at each other.Walking side by side through the rain, we discussed the direction of our next research project.Suddenly, Jaxson came stumbling out from the side entrance of the auditorium. He was soaked from h

It was the Wesmuth University orientation gala.As the freshman representative, I stood beneath the spotlight in the grand auditorium, dressed in a formal gown. Calmly and confidently, I read my speech. My voice carried through the microphone across the entire hall."Over the next four years, may we all learn to shut out the noise of the outside world and discover our own irreplaceable value."As my words came to an end, the audience burst into applause. I gave a slight bow and turned to leave the stage. When I reached the dimly lit hallway backstage, I saw Jaxson standing there. He was dressed in a meticulously tailored suit and was holding a large bouquet of red roses. His eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, he slowly walked toward me, taking one careful step at a time.He spoke in a hoarse voice. "Mira, I know everything now. Back then, Ingrid broke the rules in the computer lab on purpose. She just wanted to see if I'd come to her rescue unconditionally. I saw the scre

The words "You disgust me" stabbed straight into Jaxson's heart like a knife. He stared at me in disbelief, his eyes filled with the confusion of someone who no longer recognized the young woman standing before him. In his mind, I had always been gentle and forgiving. As long as he humbled himself just a little, I would always let him off the hook. But now, there was nothing in my eyes except disgust. There wasn't the slightest trace of lingering affection that remained."Mira..." Jaxson murmured my name and tried to step forward again.Zayn had already taken out his phone and dialed campus security. "Hello? I'm right outside Building Six of the women's dormitory. Someone is causing a disturbance here."The moment Jaxson heard those words, his face fell. He clenched his jaw and stared at me for ten full seconds. In the end, he looked utterly defeated. He turned around dejectedly and stumbled out of the campus.Watching his retreating figure, I let out a long sigh of relief."Th

Jaxson pounded on the door downstairs for half an hour. He almost drew the attention of the area's security guards.Wearing her pajamas, Tamara stepped onto the balcony. "If you keep harassing me, I'm calling the police!""Tamara, I'm begging you. Please tell me where Mira is," Jaxson said, staring up at the second-floor balcony. "I've realized how much of a jerk I'd been. Just tell me where she is. I'll get down on my knees and apologize to her!"Seeing the once-arrogant scion looking so miserable, Tamara felt immensely satisfied. She looked down at him coldly and said, "It's too late. Mira already left to report to Wesmuth University. She changed all her contact information just to get away from trash like you. Stop bothering her. The least you can do is not disrupt her life. You owe her that much."With that, Tamara shut the balcony door."Wesmuth University..." Jaxson muttered to himself, a look of stubborn determination filling his eyes. That was right—Wesmuth University.

The hotel room was empty. The luggage rack showed no sign that anyone had even touched it.Jaxson frowned. He thought I'd gone for a walk on the beach, so he called me."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy..."His call had been blocked.A flicker of irritation rose inside him. He felt I'd dragged this tantrum on long enough. So, he borrowed one of the hotel staff's phones and called again. The phone rang for a long time before it was finally answered."Hello." My calm voice came through the receiver."I'm already at Sundale. What are you upset about now?" Jaxson grumbled.Suppressing his irritation, he did his best to keep his voice gentle. "Where are you? I'll come find you."There was a two-second silence before I replied in a soft voice, "Jaxson, you made that post saying the storm had passed. So, I wish you nothing but clear skies."His heart lurched as a wave of panic instantly seized him. "What do you mean? Mira, don't scare me...""It's over between us
