Confession of an Affair

Mark had once told me about Emily. He’d said she was the girlfriend of a former medical student he’d mentored, who tragically died in a car accident. Emily was already pregnant at the time, and eventually, her son, Jason, was diagnosed with kidney failure. Mark went out of his way to transfer Jason to our hospital, urging me to take special care of Emily and her son.Recently, though, testing had shown that Emily wasn’t a compatible kidney donor for Jason and that news seemed to have taken a toll on her mental state.Reminded of this, I spoke sincerely, “Look, I understand how desperate you are about Jason’s condition. Waiting for a kidney donor is a long process. But accusing me of being a homewrecker isn’t going to get him priority in the system.“Emily, you need to face reality. Mark and I have been married since graduation. I’m his legal family.”One of the senior leaders in the hospital nodded in agreement. “I supervised Mark when he first joined the hospital. I even appro

Emily clutched her face, shouting furiously, “Are you really going to let our son die just for her?”I wiped the blood from my forehead, smiling bitterly. “Mark, with your illegitimate son so old now, I want a divorce!”The crowd looked on in confusion, their eyes darting between me and Emily.“Mark, if she just agrees to let Mia donate the kidney, our son still has a chance!” Emily insisted.Mark’s face was stormy as he snapped at her, “You’re insane! Stop causing trouble here and leave!”Then, turning to me, he softened his tone. “Anna, we need to get that injury on your head looked at. Once you’re better, I’ll explain everything.”Even though I felt unsteady, I stubbornly brushed off his attempt to support me. “I’ll go to the ER myself. You stay here and explain things to these people.”Mark tried to follow me, but reporters quickly surrounded him.“Dr. Hamilton, your wife was being harassed by another woman. Do you have any comments on that?”“How long has your affair with

“Heh, I knew the truth ages ago. Anna is Randall Miller’s daughter, and he’s a big shot! There’s no way his daughter would lower herself to be some homewrecker!”“You knew and didn’t say anything? I’ve been cursing Dr. Miller online for days!”“Stealing someone’s husband and then labeling the wife a mistress, all to take their daughter’s kidney? This scumbag couple has no limits!”“Dr. Miller worked herself to the bone trying to treat her son, and the mom turns around and slanders her? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!”“This time, I doubt there’s any hidden twist. Alright, everyone, get ready to aim and fire at the mistress!”The internet was full of people condemning Emily, but I had no time to worry about it.My dad had flown in unexpectedly and asked me to bring Mia to join him for lunch. When we arrived, he was in the middle of a video meeting. While waiting, Mr. Smith placed a stack of files in front of me.“Here’s the full story on Mark and Emily. Take a look.”

A month later, Mark and I finalized the divorce. As we walked out of the courthouse, he flashed me a smug smile."I’m being transferred to the city soon, so I won’t be around much,” he said. “How about a farewell dinner to thank my former father-in-law?”Without another glance, I turned and walked away. When I got home, I handed the evidence Mr. Smith had uncovered about Mark’s crimes to the authorities. During the investigation into Mark and Emily, Mr. Smith found that Mark had numerous assets of suspicious origin. Tracing this lead further, they discovered he had been taking bribes for years. The matter caught the attention of officials, and they sent a team to investigate. However, as soon as the inquiry began, Mark disappeared. The investigative team came to question me, and I told them I hadn’t seen him since the divorce. One night while I was on duty, Emily burst into the ward covered in blood, holding a small medical cooler and looking half-crazed.“Jason can be save
