I had always been half a beat too slow. My childhood friend, Alexa Collins, and my best friend, Zane Sterling, were the exact opposite. They moved through life as if everything were urgent. When we ate together, I would still be halfway through my meal while the two of them had already finished. Then they would urge each other to hurry to the internet cafe next door, leaving me alone at the table. When we went swimming, I once cramped up halfway through and called for help, only to realize they had already climbed out of the pool and disappeared without a trace. When we filled out our college applications, I had not even logged in yet before the two of them had already chosen their school and submitted everything. Then they stood up in a rush. "Ian, you're way too slow," Alexa said. "I need to help Zane grab concert tickets, so we're not waiting for you. We both applied to Ashford University. Just make sure you don't mess it up." Before her words had even settled, Zane had already grabbed her hand and pulled her out the door. They were in such a hurry that she never heard me say, "I'm not going to Ashford University anymore.
