Chapter 10

Author: Egg-Tart
Three Years Later

Autumn in Nordica City was always short and beautiful.

In my lab coat, I strode through the research institute with our latest report in hand.

"Jace, congrats! The project won a national award. Dinner's on you tonight!"

My coworkers grinned as I passed.

I smiled back. "Deal. Same place tonight. My treat."

In three years, I'd gone from intern to deputy director.

Leaving that suffocating mess behind hadn't broken me.

I'd built a brilliant life all on my own.

Three Years LaterAutumn in Nordica City was always short and beautiful. In my lab coat, I strode through the research institute with our latest report in hand."Jace, congrats! The project won a national award. Dinner's on you tonight!"My coworkers grinned as I passed.I smiled back. "Deal. Same place tonight. My treat."In three years, I'd gone from intern to deputy director.Leaving that suffocating mess behind hadn't broken me.I'd built a brilliant life all on my own. After work, I passed a pet store.A golden retriever puppy stood pressed against the display window, wagging its tail at me.Its bright eyes were full of curiosity.I pushed open the door and stepped inside."I'll take this one."On my way home, with the puppy in my arms, I heard my phone ring.It was Selena.Over the past three years, she'd sent me updates from back home now and then. I never replied, but I never blocked her either."Jace, Ada went back yesterday." Selena's voice was heavy. "Her le

Winter came early to Nordica City. The day the first snow fell, I left the research institute after working late. The icy wind sliced through my coat, making me shiver. As I reached the intersection, a black sedan suddenly came speeding from the side. Its headlights blinded me.I froze. My mind went blank.Right before it hit me, someone shoved me out of the way.I slammed onto the grass, scraping my elbow raw.A deafening crash exploded behind me.Terrified, I spun around.Ada lay in a pool of blood. Farther down the road, the car had slammed into a streetlight, its front end crushed."Ada!"I rushed over and pressed my shaking hands against the wound on her head. She slowly opened her eyes and forced a weak smile."Jace... as long as you're okay."The ambulance arrived minutes later, and Ada was rushed into emergency surgery.I waited outside the operating room for six hours.Dr. Bennett rushed over when he heard and put a hand on my shoulder."She made it through. Owen's arrest became the biggest story in town.My parents begged everyone they knew for help. They even sold the family home, but they still couldn't get him out. With nowhere else to turn, they finally remembered me.They called while I was backstage getting ready for the symposium."Jace! Do you know what happened to Owen? You need to use your connections in Nordica and get him out!"My mother's voice was as entitled as ever.I straightened my collar in the mirror. "I don't have any connections. And even if I did, I wouldn't help him.""You ungrateful monster! He's your brother! Are you really going to stand there and let his life be ruined?""He ruined it himself."I hung up and blocked both their numbers. The symposium was a huge success. As Dr. Bennett's assistant, I presented our research findings without missing a beat. The room burst into applause.Standing under the spotlight, surrounded by approving faces, I felt a sense of peace and pride I'd never known before

Ada never went home.Instead, she rented an apartment across from the research institute and shadowed me like a ghost.Every morning before I left for work, she'd already left my favorite breakfast hanging from my doorknob.Every night after work, she'd follow me from a distance. Once I went upstairs, I'd sometimes see the lights in her apartment switch on.She stopped trying to get close to me.Instead, she clung to this pathetic routine, as if reminding me she was still there.I ignored her and tossed every breakfast she left straight into the trash. That weekend, Selena called."Jace, Ada hasn't been back to the office in over two weeks. All her projects are stalled. If this keeps up, the board's going to force her out. Can you please talk to her?""What she does is none of my concern," I said calmly. After we hung up, I went downstairs to grab some groceries. The second I reached the entrance to my condo, Ada stepped out from around the corner. She held two cups of hot

The file hit the blanket with a dull thud.Owen flinched."Ada, what are you talking about? I really don't feel well."He reached for the hem of her shirt, but she pulled back in disgust."Don't feel well?" Ada gave a cold laugh and jabbed a finger at the results. "The doctor said you're perfectly healthy aside from low blood sugar."You and your mom lied about surgery just to trick me into coming back from Nordica?"The hospital room door swung open.Jace and Owen's mom, Linda, walked in carrying a container of food, just in time to hear Ada's accusation. Her face hardened instantly. She stepped in front of Owen."Ada, what do you think you're doing? Owen's always been fragile. The doctor said he still needs to stay under observation. How can you barge in here and yell at him over that heartless Jace?"Ada stared at Linda, then at Owen, disbelief washing over her.She took a slow, steady breath. Then it hit her.The day Jace left home. The look in Owen's eyes after he sma

Third-Person POVAfter sending Jace one more message, Ada stared at the Not Delivered notification, then tossed her phone onto the couch. She figured he'd gone back to his dorm, like he always did after they fought. That night, she opened the door to his room, planning to pack a few changes of clothes for him.The room was empty.Every last piece of clothing was gone. His medical textbooks. His photo albums. Even the toothbrush in the bathroom. All his belongings were gone. The only things left were the engagement ring and silver cufflinks, sitting by themselves on the coffee table in the living room.Ada's breath caught. She grabbed her phone and called Jace again and again. All she got was an automated message. That night, she drove straight to his university. The dorm supervisor told her Jace had checked out yesterday. Then she rushed to the medical device company where he'd interviewed. The HR manager told her Jace had never signed the employment contract. He'd turne
