The first thing I felt when I woke up was the cold, empty space beside me.

The sheets were rumpled, still holding the shape of Dante’s body and his scent, but he was gone. A flicker of disappointment went through me, followed by a whisper of worry. After the fire, after the intensity of last night, his absence felt heavy.

I pushed myself up, rubbing my eyes. The penthouse was utterly silent. Too silent. I got out of bed, pulling on the silk robe he’d left for me, and padded out into the living room.

Nothing. Just the stunning, lonely view of the city.

My phone, charging on the kitchen counter, buzzed loudly, making me jump. I rushed over and saw it was my best friend, Lucy.

A smile touched my lips. I hadn’t spoken to her in what felt like ages. With everything going on with Dante, I’d been a terrible friend.

“Lucy! Hi!” I answered, trying to sound bright.

“Oh, so you do remember how to use a phone?”

“Lucy I…” I tried to speak.

Lucy’s voice was sharp, hurt. “I was st

***DANTE***The drive back from Lucas’s estate was silent. My knuckles ached, the skin split and bloody. The memory of my brother’s broken body on the floor was a dark satisfaction in my gut. He would not threaten what was mine again. The world felt sharper, cleaner. I had dealt with the problem.Rowan drove, his eyes constantly scanning the streets. He didn’t speak. He knew the mood I was in.When the car pulled up the long driveway to the mansion, the first thing I noticed was the light. Or the lack of it. The grand entrance was dark. Only the outside security lights were on. A cold finger of unease traced down my spine.“Why are the foyer lights off?” I growled, more to myself than Rowan. We got out. The night air was still. Too still. I pushed the heavy front door open. “Irene!” I called out, my voice echoing in the vast, empty space.Silence.Not a peaceful silence. A dead, wrong silence.“Irene!” I shouted, walking quickly into the living room. Nothing. The kitchen was empt

DANTE***The drive to Lucas’s estate was made in a silence so thick you could choke on it. I sat in the back of the car, my body a coiled spring of cold fury. The city passed by in a blur. All I could see was Irene’s sleeping face, and then the mental image of Lucas’s smug smile as he gave the order to burn what was mine.We didn't bother with the front gate. Rowan drove us to a side entrance, a place Lucas’s guards would be lazier. Two of my men were already there, holding two dazed-looking sentries against the wall. They nodded at me as I passed.I didn't knock. I just pushed the door open of the mansion and walked into the quiet, expensive stillness of my brother’s home.I found him in his sunroom, just as I expected. He was sitting in his wheelchair by a large window, a book open in his lap, a cup of tea steaming on a table beside him. He looked up as I entered, and for a split second, I saw genuine surprise in his eyes. Then it was gone, replaced by that familiar, calm mas

***DANTE***The first thing I felt was her warmth. A soft, living heat curled against my side, her head resting on my chest, one hand splayed over my heart. Irene. In the deep quiet of the penthouse bedroom, with the city lights just starting to fade against the dawn outside, her steady breathing was the only sound. The fierce, desperate need from the night before was gone, burned away and replaced by a heavy, satisfied calm. She had been my sanctuary, the only thing that could quiet the storm of rage in my blood after the fire. Now, she slept deeply, peacefully, trusting me enough to be this vulnerable.I pressed my lips to the top of her head, breathing in her scent. I never wanted to move. But then, it came. A sharp, insistent ping in my mind. A mind-link request. Rowan.*What is it?* I growled irritibly through the mindlink. *Sorry Alpha but it's important we see* A low growl rumbled in my chest, silent so as not to wake her. This had better be important.Carefully, so c

***Irene***The sun rose over the city, painting the penthouse in pale gold, but the beauty was lost on me. I paced the silent, luxurious space, my mind trapped in a loop of the burning factory and Dante’s cold, furious face. The guard Rowan placed outside was a silent statue outside the door. The world outside felt like a different planet, one where people were trying to hurt the man I…I didn’t let myself finish the thought. The text from Dante came as a relief, a tether to reality: Stay at the penthouse today. Do not leave. I will come to you tonight. The day dragged. I tried to read, to watch the vast city below, but my nerves were too frayed. All I could do was wait. Finally, as the last light of evening faded into deep blue night, I heard the soft beep of the private elevator. The doors slid open.Dante stood there. My heart squeezed. He looked… worn. Not tired in a sleepy way, but drained. The powerful energy that always surrounded him was subdued, like a storm that had spen

*** IRENE *** The night air was cool as we stepped out of the car, the pulsing bass from the underground club already a faint thrum in the distance. Dante had brought me back to the place that had started it all, maybe to remind us both of the raw passion that existed between the fights. My hand was tucked securely in his, a familiar anchor. But before we could even reach the heavy doors, his phone buzzed in his pocket with a specific, urgent rhythm. He tensed immediately. He pulled it out and looked at the screen, his expression turning to stone. "Rowan," he answered, his voice clipped. He listened for only a few seconds. "What? Where?" A muscle ticked in his jaw. "I'm on my way." He ended the call and turned to me, the brief softness from our drive completely gone, replaced by the hard-faced Alpha. "Change of plans," he said, his voice leaving no room for questions. "We have to go. Now." He didn't explain, just gripped my hand tighter and led me back to the car at a pace th
