The dresses arrived in the afternoon.

Three of them, each hanging inside a dark garment bag delivered by a silent staff member. I unzipped the first one and stared at the deep green fabric, clean lines, expensive cut. The second was black. The third was a dark wine color that caught the light when I shifted it.

None of them looked like anything I would have chosen for myself.

I left them on the bed and walked to the window. The training grounds below were busier than usual. Wolves moved in formation. Voices carried faintly through the glass. Tomorrow at sundown I would stand in front of all of them as Kael’s wife.

The title still felt like something borrowed and poorly fitted.

A knock sounded at the door. I expected Rylan. Instead, Kael stepped inside when I opened it.

He closed the door behind him and glanced once at the dresses on the bed.

“You haven’t chosen.”

“I was deciding,” I said.

He walked further into the room, stopping near the foot of the bed. His presence changed the air the way it always did—made the space feel smaller. I stayed by the window.

“The green one,” he said. “It will do.”

I raised a brow. “You’re choosing my clothes now?”

“I’m preventing unnecessary attention.” His eyes moved to my face. “The gathering is not the place for statements.”

“Everything about this arrangement is already a statement.”

Kael was silent for a moment. Then he said, “You will stand at my side for the duration of the formal welcome. After that you may leave when you wish. You are not required to socialize beyond what is necessary.”

“How generous.”

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. “I am trying to make this survivable for both of us.”

The honesty in the words caught me off guard. I looked away first, back toward the trees beyond the glass.

“Why did you come to my room?” I asked.

“To confirm you understood expectations for tomorrow.”

“I understand them.”

He did not leave. The silence stretched. I could feel the old bond stirring again, low and persistent, the way it did whenever he stood this close. My wolf pushed against my control, drawn to something I had spent three years trying to starve.

Kael’s voice was quieter when he spoke again.

“You look at me like you expect me to apologize.”

I turned my head. “I stopped expecting that a long time ago.”

Something shifted in his expression—small, controlled, but not fully hidden. He took one step closer. Not enough to touch. Enough that I had to tilt my chin slightly to hold his gaze.

“The rejection was necessary,” he said.

“For you.”

“For the pack.”

I gave a short, humorless breath. “You always did prefer the clean version of the story.”

His eyes darkened. For a moment I thought he might finally say something real. Instead he stepped back, the distance returning like a door closing.

“Wear the green dress,” he said. “Be ready by sundown. Rylan will escort you.”

He left without waiting for a reply. The door clicked shut behind him.

I stood in the quiet room and stared at the three dresses on the bed. After a long moment I reached for the green one and laid it out carefully.

Outside, the light was beginning to change. Evening would come soon. Then morning. Then the gathering.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my palms together, steadying my breathing.

Tomorrow the pack would look at me and see a contract.

I would look at Kael and see the man who had once chosen everything else over me.

And somewhere beneath all of it, the bond neither of us had managed to kill completely would keep pulling—quiet, unwanted, and still alive.

The touch stayed with me longer than the conversation did.I lay awake after Kael left, the place where his hand had rested against my neck still carrying the memory of contact. It had lasted only seconds—controlled, deliberate, and gone before either of us could cross further—but the bond had answered it with a force that refused to settle. Sleep came in fragments. Every time I closed my eyes I felt the exact pressure of his thumb beneath my jaw and the rough edge in his voice when he admitted it was not working cleanly.Morning arrived without a message.I dressed and stayed inside the east wing as ordered. The guards outside the door changed at the usual intervals. No one offered information. The house carried the same sharpened tension as the day before—more movement in the halls, shorter exchanges, the sense of a hunt in progress somewhere beyond the walls I was not allowed to cross.By midday the confinement had begun to press. I stood at the window overlooking the inner grounds

The hours after Kael left moved slowly.I stayed inside the east wing as ordered. The guards outside the door did not change again. No voices carried useful information from the hallway—only the occasional shift of weight and the low exchange of a watch rotation. Somewhere deeper in the house the wounded scout was talking, and whatever he said had been urgent enough to pull Kael away at the exact moment the space between us had nearly collapsed.I did not turn on more lights. The single lamp near the bed was enough. The bond remained active, a steady pull that had not eased since he stepped back and left. His words kept returning in pieces: the admission that he could not calculate me cleanly, the quiet confirmation that he felt the bond every time I entered a room, the way his hand had lifted and then closed before he touched me.Time stretched. When the knock finally came, it was sharper than before.I opened the door to Kael. He stepped inside at once and closed it behind him. The

The east wing felt more like a held breath than a set of rooms.I stayed inside as ordered. The guards outside the door changed once during the afternoon and again near evening. No one brought news from the eastern line. The third contact remained a closed subject, spoken about only in the low, clipped exchanges that carried faintly through the halls when warriors passed.Kael’s last words stayed with me longer than the silence did.*You are the one thing I have never been able to calculate cleanly.*He had said it like an admission he had not planned to make, then left before either of us could examine what it meant. The bond had answered it immediately, strong and restless, and it had not quieted since.Night had fully settled when the knock finally came.I opened the door to find Kael alone. He looked as if the hours since the study had been spent in continuous motion—shirt dark with the faint dust of the outer paths, expression carved into tighter lines than usual. He stepped insi

We returned to the main house in silence. The walk back from the outpost felt longer than the one going out. The confirmation sat between us without needing more words: the same faction that had forced Kael’s hand three years ago was still active, using lesser packs to test Blackthorn’s borders. The past had not stayed in the past. It had simply waited.Torren resumed his post outside the east wing when we arrived. Kael paused only long enough to give a short order to Rylan about doubling the night patrols, then disappeared toward his study without looking at me again.I closed the door to my rooms and stood in the dark for a moment, the scent from the outpost still clinging faintly to my memory. The clasp, the secondary marker, the knowledge that the same forces were moving again—all of it rearranged the shape of the contract once more. What had begun as a debt payment now sat closer to unfinished business.Sleep did not come easily. When it finally did, it was thin and broken by the

The rest of the day passed under the same tightened watch.I remained in the east wing through the afternoon. Reports moved through the house in fragments—low voices in the halls, the sound of additional warriors being directed toward the eastern line. No one brought me details. The guard rotation outside my door changed once, then settled again into silence. The conversation from the council room stayed with me. Kael had finally admitted the bond was growing harder to contain. He had said it plainly, then immediately returned to the structure of the contract and the border as if the two could still be kept separate. The honesty had not eased anything. It had only made the pull stronger.Evening had fully settled when a knock came at the door.I expected Torren or Rylan. Instead Kael stood in the hallway, alone. The expression he wore was tighter than it had been that morning.“There has been a development,” he said. “You’re coming with me.”I stepped into the hall. “Where?”“The east

Morning arrived with no message from Kael.I woke to the same tightened security—guards posted at the usual points, the east wing still under quiet watch. The conversation from the night before sat heavy in the room. He had come close enough that the bond had surged between us, close enough that his hand had almost reached for me before he forced it back down. Then he had left, choosing control again.I dressed and stepped into the hallway. Torren was already waiting. He gave a short nod and followed as I walked toward the main stairs. I had no destination beyond the need to move. The house carried a different weight today. More warriors passed through the halls. Voices stayed low. Whatever the second border report had contained, it had not fully settled.I reached the entrance to the smaller council room before I realized Kael was inside. The door stood partially open. He stood over a long table with Rylan and two senior warriors, a map spread between them. His posture was rigid, att
