“No.”

The word tearing out of my chest is loud, violent, and absolute. I step backward away from the lit tablet in Jefferson's hand, my heels clicking sharply against the cold marble floor.

"I am not marrying anyone," I say, my voice trembling with a mix of fury and raw terror. "I don't care about your forty-day deadline. I don't care about your board vote. I want my life back, I want my gallery, and I want to walk out of these doors right now!"

Sylvester doesn't even blink. He steps around Jefferson, his massive frame towering over me, bringing with him the suffocating scent of cedar and bitter power.

"You think you have a choice?" Sylvester’s voice drops into a low, terrifying growl. "You walked onto my private floor. You put on my mother's silk. You gave Victor Hale the exact ammo he needed to try and strip my voting rights tonight. You walk out those doors without my ring on your finger, and I will make sure you never see daylight again."

"I told you I didn't work for Hale!" I scream at him, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides. "I am an independent curator! I built my career from nothing after my parents died! You can't just force me into a fake marriage!"

"I don't have to force you," Sylvester says coldly, pulling his thin phone from his inner pocket and tapping the glass screen with deliberate, slow precision. "I press one button right now, and charges are filed with the District Attorney for high-level corporate espionage, felony trespassing, and theft of high-value estate assets. By morning, every major auction house, gallery, and private collector from Manhattan to London will have your name on a red-flag blacklist. You won't even be able to get a job sweeping floors in an art supply shop."

A cold spike of dread pierces straight through my gut. My breath catches in my throat. I look into his dark, unblinking eyes and I know he isn't lying. He has the money, the power, and the ruthlessness to destroy my entire existence before sunrise.

"You're a monster," I whisper, the words burning my dry throat.

"I'm a man protecting what is mine," he snaps back. "And right now, you are the only obstacle standing between me and my family's empire."

Jefferson steps smoothly between us, holding up his hands to break the crackling, electric tension filling the room.

"Let's lower our voices," Jefferson says, his voice maddeningly calm and practical. "Miss Reed, please. Look at this logically. You are facing complete financial ruin and criminal prosecution. Or, you accept a standardized, twelve-month temporary arrangement. You receive two million dollars upon execution of the agreement, another three million upon quiet dissolution next year, and full seed funding for your independent gallery."

I stare at Jefferson, my chest heaving as panic wars with cold survival instincts. "And what does that money actually cost me? What am I giving up?"

"Your freedom for three hundred and sixty-five days," Sylvester interjects, his tone dripping with sheer disdain. "You live in the west wing of my estate. You attend four mandatory public events a year to satisfy the board's public relations standards. You speak to no journalists. You answer no questions about my personal life. And you sign a non-disclosure agreement with a fifty-million-dollar penalty clause."

"And if I refuse?" I ask, my voice shaking despite every effort to hold it steady.

Sylvester steps closer, stopping so near I can feel the dangerous heat radiating off his chest. His eyes drag down over my face, scanning my fear with zero mercy. "If you refuse, I call the DA. I sign the complaint. And I watch the NYPD drag you out of this building in handcuffs in front of thirty press cameras."

The power imbalance in the room is absolute. He holds every card, every dollar, and every law in his iron grip.

Pride screams at me to spit in his face and let him call the police. Pride tells me to risk the trial, risk the court fight, and preserve what little dignity I have left after losing my parents. But survival—the deep, desperate instinct that kept me alive through two years of grief and crushing debt—tells me a different story. If I go to jail, my parents' remaining collection gets liquidated by Victor Hale's predatory loans. My mother's journals will be auctioned off for pennies. Everything my family built will be erased.

"Three days," I say softly, looking from Sylvester's icy face to Jefferson's calculating expression. "You said the will gives you three days."

"Seventy-two hours," Jefferson corrects smoothly, pulling a heavy, cream-colored document and a heavy silver fountain pen from his portfolio. "The board meets on Monday morning at nine. The digital license is already queued with the clerk's office. All we need is your physical signature on the preliminary contract."

Sylvester watches me in complete silence, his jaw set, his dark eyes narrowed. He expects me to break. He expects me to throw a fit, beg for mercy, or scream about how unfair the world is so he can dismiss me as another weak, manipulative woman like his mother.

I take a slow, deep breath, forcing my heart rate down. I step past him toward the mahogany nightstand where Jefferson lays the paper flat.

"I have a condition," I say, my voice dropping into a hard, clear register that startles both men.

Sylvester lets out a dark, mocking sound from the back of his throat. "You aren't in a position to set conditions, Miss Reed."

"I am the one holding the pen, Mr. Arlington," I reply, turning my head to glare straight into his icy eyes. "Without my signature, your board freezes your shares in seventy-two hours, Victor Hale takes over your executive seat, and you lose Arlington Global. You need me just as much as I need to stay out of a prison cell."

Jefferson shifts his weight, glancing at Sylvester with a subtle nod. "Let's hear the condition, Miss Reed."

I look Sylvester up and down, letting my gaze linger on his broad chest, his disheveled tux, and the cold, arrogant tilt of his head. The air between us crackles with mutual distrust, bitter resentment, and an intense, dangerous physical awareness that makes my skin prickle with heat.

"I sign your paper," I state clearly, picking up the heavy silver pen. "I live in your west wing. I pose for your press photos. But we add a specific, legally binding addendum right here on page one."

Sylvester steps up beside me, his presence looming large and heavy over the table. "Spill it."

I look him straight in the eyes, unblinking, and lower the tip of the pen to the fresh line beneath the financial terms.

"You never touch me," I say, each word landing like a sharp blade between us. "No physical contact in private. No forced affection. No territorial possessiveness when the cameras aren't rolling. You stay in your wing, I stay in mine. If you break that line once, the entire non-disclosure agreement becomes null and void, and I walk away with half your shares."

A heavy, dangerous silence descends over the penthouse. Sylvester's dark eyes flame with a sudden, violent heat. He steps right into my personal space, his chest almost brushing my shoulder, his breathing deep and ragged.

"You think I want to touch you?" he whispers, his voice dripping with venomous pride. "You think I want a fake, gold-digging intruder in my bed? You couldn't pay me enough money to touch a single hair on your head, Miss Reed."

"Then you shouldn't have any trouble agreeing to the terms, Mr. Arlington," I counter, refusing to back down an inch.

Jefferson exhales a quiet, long-held breath, pulling a sleek seal from his pocket and stamping the bottom corner of the document. "The addendum is acceptable. Write it in, Miss Reed."

I don't hesitate. I press the tip of the fountain pen to the heavy parchment paper. In clear, hard, unfaltering cursive, I write the exact words across the top margin: Party of the First Part shall maintain absolute physical boundaries. You never touch me.

I sign my full name beside it: Alice Reed.

The ink glitters black against the paper before soaking in, binding my life to Sylvester Arlington for the next three hundred and sixty-five days.

Sylvester snatches the pen out of my hand the second I finish. Without saying a single word, he slashes his own brutal, jagged signature across the line beneath mine: Sylvester Arlington.

"Done," Jefferson says, taking the signed pages and sliding them immediately into a heavy, fireproof leather casing. "The marriage filing is officially complete. The board's injunction is dead on arrival."

The quiet chime of the private elevator rings out again through the suite. The heavy titanium doors slide open, revealing the clear, lit hallway beyond. The lockdown protocol is finished. The cage is unlocked.

"Get her out of my sight, Jefferson," Sylvester growls, turning his back on me and walking toward the glass windows overlooking the glittering skyline of Manhattan. "Take her to the estate. Put her in the west wing. And make sure she stays there until the press conference at noon."

"Right away," Jefferson says, gesturing toward the open lift. "After you, Mrs. Arlington."

The name feels like a heavy iron collar dropping over my neck. Mrs. Arlington.

I gather the folds of the oversized black silk robe tightly around my body, holding my head high as I walk past Sylvester's imposing, dark silhouette. I step into the elevator carriage, turning around just as the heavy brushed-steel doors begin to slide shut.

Sylvester doesn't turn around, but his reflection in the glass window catches my eye—cold, possessive, and brooding, watching me with a dark, intense gaze that promises pure hell for the year ahead.

Just as the doors are about to seal completely, Jefferson’s phone chimes violently in his hand. He taps the screen, glances down at a newly delivered text message, and his face instantly loses all color.

"Jefferson?" I ask, my voice tightening. "What is it?"

Jefferson looks up from the screen, his blue eyes wide with pure shock as he looks at me through the closing gap of the steel doors.

"It's a certified court delivery from the probate registry," Jefferson says, his voice cracking slightly. "Victor Hale just filed an emergency petition to halt the marriage recognition."

The elevator doors freeze two inches apart as Sylvester snaps his head around from the window.

"On what grounds?" Sylvester demands, his voice roaring across the room.

Jefferson reads the text message aloud, his voice echoing cold through the steel frame: "On the grounds that Alice Reed's mother was already legally married to Sylvester Arlington's father when she died."
