“Tell me who paid you, or you won't see daylight for the next twenty years.”

Sylvester's voice cuts through the quiet penthouse like a razor. His fingers tighten on my chin, his thumb digging into my skin, forcing my face up so I have to look straight into his dark, furious eyes.

"Nobody paid me!" I snap back, my breath coming in short, jagged gasps against his lips. "I told you, I was setting up the estate paintings! The service lift was jammed, the hallway was crowded, and I hit the wrong button!"

"Lie." He tosses my chin away like I'm trash. He paces toward the edge of the bed, broad shoulders tense beneath his tux. "You step onto a restricted private lift, bypass biometric security, and end up in my dead mother's silk robe right when the board is counting down my final seventy-two hours? Who is your employer? Is it Hale? Is it the board directors?"

"I am an independent curator," I say, my throat tight as I pull the black silk tighter over my chest. "I don't have an employer! Check my bank accounts! Search my phone! I have three hundred dollars in my checking account and a mountain of funeral debt from my parents!"

I leave out the rest. I don't tell him about my mother's encrypted journals. I don't tell him about the late-night notes she left behind, filled with dates, ledger numbers, and the name Arlington written in jagged red ink.

Sylvester stops at the foot of the bed, his dark eyes freezing into pure ice. "You think having no money makes you look innocent? It makes you cheap. It makes you easy to buy."

"I am not for sale," I whisper, standing up from the bed. My knees tremble, but I force my spine straight. "Call the police then. Bring them up here. Let them search me. I have nothing to hide."

He doesn't step closer. He keeps his distance, his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets, his body locked tight as if standing near me is a physical threat he refuses to take. "The police won't handle this quietly. The moment a squad car pulls up to Arlington Tower, the press will have photos of a woman leaving my penthouse in my mother's robe. That is exactly what whoever sent you wants."

Before I can answer, a heavy chime echoes through the room. The magnetic locks on the private entrance click open with a sharp hydraulic hiss.

A tall man in a tailored grey suit steps inside, his phone already pressed to his ear. Jefferson. Sylvester’s CFO, his chief strategist, and the only man allowed on this floor without an appointment.

Jefferson stops the second his eyes land on me. He takes in the scene in one sweeping glance—the oversized silk robe, my ruined dress underneath, the locked shutters, and Sylvester standing like a statue of pure fury.

"Hang up, Jefferson," Sylvester growls, not taking his eyes off me. "Get security up here to escort her to a holding cell down in the basement."

Jefferson doesn't hang up. He slowly lowers his phone, his sharp blue eyes locking onto my face with a cold, terrifying calculation.

"Hold on, Sylvester," Jefferson says smoothly. He walks right past me, stepping close to Sylvester and dropping his voice to an urgent whisper that still echoes off the marble walls. "The board just called an emergency session for Monday morning. Victor Hale filed a motion to freeze your voting shares on the grounds of moral instability and failure to fulfill the inheritance clause."

"I don't care what Hale filed," Sylvester snaps, his jaw clenching hard. "I'm throwing this fake curator out on her ass."

"You throw her out, and Hale's photographers down in the alley take fifty pictures of her running out of your private elevator," Jefferson says, his voice flat and precise. "You have three days left, Sylvester. Three days to produce a legally recognized wife or lose fifty-one percent of Arlington Global to the board."

"I am not marrying a plant," Sylvester says, his voice dropping to a dangerous, guttural rasp. "My father let a woman crawl into his bed and strip him of half his assets before he died. I will burn this company to the ground before I repeat his mistake."

"Look at her background check," Jefferson interrupts, pulling a slim tablet from his leather portfolio and tapping the screen fast. "I ran her face through our registry the second the elevator alarm pinged downstairs. Alice Reed. Twenty-four years old. Orphaned two years ago. No political connections. No media presence. No money. No family."

Alice Reed. He says my name like I am a line item on an expense report.

"She was hired by the charity committee six months ago to restore the estate collection," Jefferson continues, stepping closer to Sylvester, showing him the tablet screen. "She has no ties to Hale. She has no ties to the board. She is completely clean, completely unknown, and completely broke."

"That makes her dangerous," Sylvester mutters, though his eyes slide over to the screen, scanning my life history in five seconds. "It means anyone could have bought her off this morning."

"Or it means fate just dropped the exact tool we need right into our lap," Jefferson says softly.

I take a step back, my heart hammering a violent beat against my ribs. "Tool? I am standing right here! I can hear you!"

Jefferson turns his head slightly, giving me a smooth, rehearsed smile that doesn't reach his eyes for a single second. "Miss Reed, you are currently trespassing in a private residence during a high-stakes corporate transition. You are facing charges that will ensure you never set foot in an art gallery again."

"I didn't trespass!" I yell, my knuckles white where I hold the robe shut. "Your lift was broken!"

"It doesn't matter what happened with the lift," Jefferson replies calmly, taking a step toward me while Sylvester watches from the shadow of the fireplace. "What matters is what happens next. You need money to pay off your parents' debt and save your career. Sylvester needs a wife for twelve months to secure his inheritance."

"No," Sylvester says instantly, his voice like iron. "Absolutely not."

"Think about the math, Sylvester!" Jefferson turns back to him, his patience wearing thin. "The board expects you to present a high-society heiress they can manipulate. If you present an unknown, quiet woman with no family backing, they have no leverage over her. We draft a strict, bulletproof contract. Twelve months. Public appearances only. Separate quarters. Complete non-disclosure. When the year is up, she gets a settlement and walks away."

Sylvester’s eyes burn into mine, dark and filled with a bitter, toxic rage. "She's sitting in my mother's robe, Jefferson. She knew where to go. She knew where to sit."

"I didn't know anything about your mother!" I shout, my voice cracking under the pressure. "I grabbed the first piece of cloth I saw because my dress was soaked in alcohol!"

"She's telling the truth about the dress," Jefferson notes quietly, glancing down at the dark stain near my hem. He turns back to Sylvester, his tone sharpening. "We don't have time to vet a socialite. We don't have time to fake a months-long romance. A sudden, quiet marriage to an artistic orphan plays as a passionate, impulsive romance to the press. It blocks Hale. It locks the shares. It saves the company."

Sylvester doesn't speak. The silence in the suite stretches out, thick and suffocating. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass, the lights of Manhattan blink like cold stars. Inside, I can feel the invisible walls of a golden trap closing in around me.

I think about the predatory offer Victor Hale made me this morning—how he threatened to destroy my name if I didn't hand over my mother's remaining paintings. I think about the unpaid bills sitting on my kitchen table. And then I think about the encrypted page in my mother's journal, the one that listed Sylvester Arlington's father as a co-signatory on an Unclaimed Beneficiary Trust that was hidden from the public record.

If I walk away now, Sylvester destroys me, Hale starves me out, and my mother's truth dies with me. If I stay... I am inside the vault.

Jefferson turns fully toward Alice, stepping between her and Sylvester, his voice dropping into a smooth, decisive tone that leaves no room for argument.

"She’s perfect," Jefferson says, looking at Sylvester with a smile that looks like a blade. "Unknown. Beautiful. No ties. Marry her or lose the company in three days."

Sylvester’s jaw tightens so hard I hear the faint crack of his teeth grinding together. A muscle ticks furiously along his jawline as he stares at me, looking at me not like a human being, but like a dangerous, necessary poison he has to swallow.

"Twelve months," Sylvester growls, his voice dripping with absolute venom. "No touch. No public speaking without my approval. And the second the board vote passes next year, you disappear from my life forever."

My heart roars in my ears like a jet engine. My breath comes quick and shallow. The air in the penthouse feels thin, cold, and heavy with power I was never meant to touch.

The elevator doors behind Jefferson give a soft, mechanical sigh, unlocking completely and sliding open to reveal the empty, lit carriage waiting to take us down.

I take a deep breath, let my posture straighten, and look Sylvester Arlington straight in the eye. I reach up with one hand, letting the heavy silk robe fall open just enough to expose the ruined, alcohol-stained fabric of my thrift-store dress underneath.

"I'll consider your contract, Mr. Arlington," I say, my voice ringing out steady and cold through the massive room. "But only if we discuss the terms in a room where I haven't been imprisoned."

Sylvester takes one long stride toward me, stopping so close I can feel the blistering heat of his breath against my forehead. He reaches into his jacket, pulls out a sleek, black encrypted drive, and slams it into Jefferson's chest without breaking eye contact with me.

"Draft the papers, Jefferson," Sylvester whispers, his dark eyes burning into mine with pure hatred. "And add a clause that says if she leaks a single word to the press, I take everything she owns, down to her mother's grave."

Jefferson doesn't hesitate. He taps his tablet screen three times, locking the file, then looks up at me with a sharp, victorious smile.

"The preliminary terms are already loaded, Miss Reed," Jefferson says, holding out the tablet to me. "And your first official duty as Mrs. Arlington starts right now."

He swipes the screen, turning it toward my face.

On the screen is a live news broadcast from the street directly in front of Arlington Tower. A banner flashes across the bottom of the television screen in bold red letters:

BREAKING: SYLVESTER ARLINGTON ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT TO SECRET HEIRESS AFTER EMERGENCY LICENSE FILED AT 11:59 PM.

Directly beneath the headline is a crystal-clear, high-definition photograph taken thirty seconds ago—a zoomed-in shot of my face sitting on Sylvester's bed, wearing his mother's monogrammed silk robe, stamped with a legally binding digital marriage registry stamp signed in my name.
