Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
I listened to Richard Gray casually say that the company treated its employees well, so they were going to write it off.

I felt as if I was doused with ice-cold water. Even my fingertips were numb.

I protested with a trembling voice, "Mr. Gray, I worked overtime for half a month straight just to bag this deal! I drank so much that I was hospitalized! I reported and asked for permission for every single concession and expense to you, and now, you're saying that these are losses due to my actions?"

I rolled up my left sleeve. The burn mark on my forearm from rushing the project report could still be seen clearly.

"So, this is what you meant when you called me the pillar of the company? A negative commission of two hundred and fifty dollars?"

Richard's gaze darkened as he snarled threateningly, "Eva Shaw, watch your behavior! The company is a place of rules and regulations! We ask for results, but we can't avoid the problems as well!

"Are you truly contributing value to this company, or merely creating liabilities? A contract's face value means nothing unless the full cost is accounted for. You need a longer-term perspective. Stop obsessing over small, immediate profits!"

The company was on the brink of collapse. The huge deal that I signed on literally put out the fire.

However, that was how I was repaid in return.

My heart completely sank. All of the promises of my future and career progression sounded comical at that moment.

I returned to my office seat with the cost-calculation sheet.

Upon slumping on my chair, Mary Walters, sitting opposite me, popped her head over the cubicle.

She said with an inquisitive smile, "Eva, you're back. Mr. Gray must've surely given you a huge bonus, right? I'm sure with a deal this big, it's at least this amount?"

She gestured a number, looking envious. I opened my mouth, but nothing came up.

Negative 250 dollars. It was so absurd I wanted to laugh.

Before I could form my sentence, another colleague, Jamie Chloe, walked past while heading back from getting a glass of water, came over and said hushedly, "Eva, did you hear about the new intern from the admin department, Jessica Sanders?

"She's only been here for a month, and Mr. Gray has already awarded her a bonus of a hundred thousand dollars! My God! A hundred thousand! They said that it was for her potential contributions. Some people really do get a different life after all."

The director of the legal department stepped forward and said sternly, showing credentials, "Mr. Gray, your behavior already constitutes a disturbance of public order and commercial defamation."Mr. Wood's contract with us was signed voluntarily after he lawfully terminated his contract with your company, all based on his confidence in Ms. Shaw's professional abilities and Easy Tech's platform. The entire process was compliant with all regulations."If you continue spreading false accusations, we will contact the authorities immediately and reserve the right to pursue legal action against you and your company, including, but not limited to, your previous attempt to pin the substantial losses on Ms. Shaw."Richard was terrified by his professional jargon, but he still said, "Y-You're just being a bully!"I snickered. "Richard, what we are is following the law, morality, and humanity. You, on the other hand, other than throwing tantrums and making a scene, what else do you have?"Ri

Richard bellowed, "Don't you dare! I'm warning you!"Right at that moment, a middle-aged woman dressed in expensive clothing stormed in through the front door.It was Hannah Blunt, Richard's wife. We had met her once at the company's New Year's party. "Where is that skank?! Richard, where did you hide that homewrecker?!"She locked eyes on Jessica standing behind Richard."You!"Hannah rushed over before anyone could react and grabbed Jessica by her primed up hair and slapped her with the other hand.Jessica screamed. She was in so much pain that tears instantly fell. She tried to break free to hide behind Richard."You shameless skank! How dare you seduce a married man?! You've spent all your time at work trying to be a homewrecker! I'll beat you to death!"Hannah hit Jessica while yelling. The entire commotion was chaotic.Richard panicked. He tried to step in between, but he was concerned about his reputation and everyone's gaze, so he merely yelled helplessly, "Stop hi

I paused for a while before stressing, "Besides, to show my appreciation, I bring with me a 12-million-dollar contract with Mr. Albert Wood to Easy Tech. I promised you that this project in the hands of Easy Tech would only be better and even more exceptional."Daniel was first stunned, but then he burst out into laughter."Amazing! This is amazing! Eva, I knew you were the right choice! Welcome to Easy Tech! I'll get my staff to draft up the contract right away!"I hung up the phone and looked at Albert once more.He chuckled cheerfully and reached his hand out. "Alright, Eva… I mean, Director Eva Shaw! I recognize real talent when I see it. It's a deal! I'll continue this deal with you at Easy Tech. Here's to a successful partnership!""A successful partnership!"We shook hands, and Albert left with his team in delight.Richard pointed at me and berated, "Eva, you shameless woman! How dare you poach my client right in front of me?! All these years, I taught you, trained you, a

"You would've then realized that the core data was based on the market three months ago. The policies have been updated. Even in the most important risk assessment module, I deliberately highlighted a few parts that needed to be updated."However, Jessica wouldn't even spend the time to study it. She just wants things done for her. She used the data that she stole as-is. How's there such a thing as a free lunch in this world?"Now that she's having an upset stomach because of the free lunch, she wants to blame the person who made the lunch. Mr. Gray, this can't be justified, no matter how you try."My words completely made Richard speechless. He knew better than anyone how Jessica took over the project. He did not even verify the details of the report. He was greedy and lazy, urgently wanting to replace me, so he had to bear the consequences of his actions.I looked at Albert and added, "Mr. Wood, as for responsibility, there's something I'd like to make clear. Before I resigned,

Richard's eyes were about to pop out of his skull due to the shock. "What did you say? Who approved your resignation? I didn't!"I cocked my head a little and explained, "Mr. Gray, approval isn't required for an employee's resignation. Besides, I thought this was what you wanted?""Eva, you can't go!"Richard no longer cared about image. He grabbed me by the arm desperately. "Eva, I was wrong!"He said with a catch in his throat, "I'll pay you the commission. Double! No, triple! You've always wanted to be the deputy CEO, right? You have it!"I'll appoint you as deputy CEO right away. You'll be in charge of the company's businesses! As long as you can keep Mr. Wood happy and save the project, you can have anything you want! The company must stay afloat!"Jessica shrieked, "Richard! You promised me the deputy CEO position! How could you…""Shut up!" Richard snapped, glaring at Jessica murderously."You useless failure! If it weren't for you, the company wouldn't have ended up i

I did not put up a fight. I calmly packed up my belongings and moved my workstation over to the new spot. I accepted every form of petty nitpicking and sabotage without any reaction.Richard finally lost his patience and decided to confront me. He summoned me to his office and cut straight to the point."Eva, let's speak frankly."He leaned back on his swivelling chair and said to me condescendingly, "Everyone has seen your recent behavior. You're passive, lazy, and disengaged. You're seriously harming the company's atmosphere and the team's morale."I asked, perplexed, "Mr. Gray, when have I been passive and lazy?"He snickered and replied, "You still won't admit to it? You clock out right on time every day. You won't accept new projects or maintain your old clients. You're either playing games or browsing the internet. Are you not slacking off?""Mr. Gray, you've misunderstood," I said earnestly."I don't easily pick up calls from our clients because I'm worried I might spea
