SLOAN.

Typically the mansions imposing reverberating halls hummed in a steady rhythm, hushed staff voices the distant clink of china from the kitchen and footsteps on marble. It was a continuous background to my painstakingly planned life a symphony of subdued luxury.

I entered the dinning room.I looked toward Ivy's usual seat, thinking I might see her there along with a discarded napkin or a half-eaten croissant. Nothing. Just a spotlessly organized space waiting. A few minutes had passed since her typical time.

No big deal isnt it? Perhaps she was just primping and running a little late rehearsing the easy elegance she somehow managed to project even while she was most likely fumbling with a stubborn zipper.

I greeted the stoic butler “Good morning.”

“Good morning, Sir ” He said in a low inconspicuous whisper. “Coffee?”

“Please.” I sipped allowing the dark rich liquid to warm me. “Has Ivy come down yet?”

His eyes flitted in my direction after usually being focused on an invisibl

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 126: Sloans Hurrying Chase

Author's pov.The maids frantic footsteps echoed through the long corridors of the mansion breaking the silence as though they were being pursued by a ghost. As other maids from adjacent rooms heard Claras scream they hurried to the scene their expressions a mix of fear and bewilderment. They found Clara and Elara motionless in the doorway their eyes wide with fear and their hands clasped over their mouths. It only required a silent exchange of horrified looks. The image of Ivy's lifeless pale body on the chilly bathroom tiles was a horrifying reality that didnt require an explanation. The small group was overtaken by panic a wild and infectious force. With a reedy whisper Clara finally choked out “Go! Get Sloan!. Now!”There was no need to repeat the story to the younger maids. With their starched aprons flapping behind them they turned and ran down the hall. One of them a sixteen-year-old girl was crying uncontrollably as she ran. The others who had more experience had grim expre

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 125: The Horrifying Finding

Author's pov The only sound in the morning silence of the east wing of the mansion was the steady clinking of silver on porcelain. Dust motes dancing in the air were illuminated by a low sunbeam that slanted through the window. With practiced ease Clara and Elara, two maids went about their daily tasks. As she arranged a pile of books on a mahogany end table Elara, a happy woman with a cloud of dark curls hummed a tuneless tune. With a methodical back-and-forth motion Clara who was older and more practical cleaned a glass surface. Their final stop on the wing was Ivys room which was typically characterized by a subdued tension that distinguished it from the others. But now there was a strange silence that had descended upon the room. Although the bed was not made and the sheets were a mess of white cotton Ivy was not there. “She must be with Sloan” Elara whispered as though it would disturb the fragile silence if she spoke too loudly. “These days he never leaves her side.”Clara

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 124: Unaccompanied

IVY.I forced myself to sit, a symphony of aches and pains singing through my muscles as the floorboards moaned in protest. The dull throbbing drumbeat that had been in my head had suddenly transformed into a full-fledged percussion concert behind my eyes. Even though Sloan had instructed me to take a break, the mere idea of remaining motionless for another second made me feel uneasy again. Remaining in bed felt like giving in to the silent agony of my own thoughts which were a maddening jumble of unsolved questions and Victor’s eerie smile. I needed to move around. I needed to do something. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and put my feet on the chilly floor refusing to wait for the maids. I was momentarily pulled out of my spiraling thoughts by the tiles which struck me as a sharp grounding sensation. Every stride was an effort a slow methodical march in the direction of the restroom. With every movement my muscles which had been stiffened by days of forced rest screamed.

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 123: Echoes of a Touch

IVY.The afternoon sun was a faint recollection and the room felt cold once more. With my legs crossed over my chest and my eyes averted I sat on the edge of my bed. Once so secure the white walls now felt oppressive. A sharp reminder of the pages that were missing from my memory they were a blank slate. In defiance of Sloans wishes I had been attempting to interpret what had transpired. To glimpse the last three hours of my memory that had just disappeared—a fragment a shadow. It was like attempting to scoop water with my hands each time I thought I was getting close a searing pain would shoot through my skull and the moment would vanish into thin air. The memory of Victor’s visit hung over me like a poisonous specter. The most terrifying thing of all was how courteous and concerned he had been. His deliberate and smooth voice reverberated in my ears. “We all feel terrible about what happened…” “We will examine every possibility. That I can assure you…” “I sincerely hope you ge

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 122:The Unwanted Visitor

IVY.Wearing a soft robe, I sat by the large bay window and watched the afternoon sun peek through the leaves of the tall oaks outside. The medical wing felt like a haven a place of safety but the immaculate white walls and the subtle antiseptic smell served as a constant reminder of my purpose. It was an odd paradox. I had been surrounded by gentle-spoken maids filling meals and Sloan’s silent watchful presence for the past few days. Just before he left a silent fear that was more terrifying than any outburst of rage was etched on his face. He had informed me that he would review the results with Liam the security chief. I was by myself and the silence was a solace I hadn’t yet recognized I needed. A soft tap on the door snapped the silence. I said my voice still a little weak “Come in.”I thought it was Sophia or one of the maids who had been a reassuring but infrequent guest. Victor entered as soon as the door opened. My heart gave an abrupt uneasy lurch just as it was beginning

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 121: Quiet Tensions

AUTHOR'S POV.With the lingering smell of disinfectant from the medical wing and the weight of worry Sloan’s office was a suffocating blanket of silence. The sentiment was the same throughout the mansion. In the past there was a faint murmur of activity as the staff went about their daily tasks but ever since Ivy was attacked everything has become silent. The silence was tense but respectful. Holding their breath everyone awaited news and the possibility that she would be fine in no time. Sloan was the same. He was sitting at his desk a pile of unopened documents collecting dust the mahogany surface cool under his hands. The terror in Ivy’s eyes and the image of her lying so motionless and pale replayed in his mind like a million miles away. He flinched when there was a knock on his office door. “Come in” he said sounding rougher than he meant to. Victor walked in as the door opened. His smile was a bit more forced and his normally assured gait was a bit slower. Sloan knew it was
