Chapter 1

작가: Against the Flow
Four months before I was diagnosed with stomach cancer, I was dressed in a Playboy Bunny costume and working in a bar. As I picked up a tray, I suddenly fainted.

When I woke up in the hospital, I saw that I was admitted as a patient with a critical illness. The doctor asked me to stay in the hospital to receive treatment. If I didn't comply, I would die very soon.

I stared at the astronomical amount on the medical bill—78,450 dollars.

The bill didn't include the medicine I would need to purchase for future treatments, the fees I would have to pay for my stay in the hospital, or the services the hospital staff provided.

That amount was simply the first payment that had to be made. The pen fell from between my fingers, and I refused to sign the document.

"You'll die if you're not treated," the doctor explained. "Where are your parents? Hurry and tell them to pay the medical bill."

The doctor looked at me with a bewildered expression.

"They won't save me. In fact, they would probably be happy if I died sooner than later," I answered weakly.

"How could that be? You should go home and gather what little money you have. The sooner you receive treatment, the higher the chances of you surviving."

The doctor encouraged me earnestly, but I just fell silent. Not long after the doctor left, three men rushed into the ICU.

I had just gotten to my feet when one of them slapped me hard across my face. The blow was so powerful that it caused my head to snap back and collide with the bedside cabinet. Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth.

My head throbbed loudly as my stomach churned. I could only curl in on myself as if the pain would lessen if I did that.

"Winter, why must you be so loathsome? You pretended to have stomach cancer and lied to us just to ruin Summer's coming-of-age party."

The man's voice was raised and accusatory, dripping with disgust. I forced myself to peel my heavy eyelids open and looked up into a face that looked similar to mine.

The handsome man was dressed in a crisp suit and was glaring at me with fury burning in his eyes. A bone-chilling coldness rolled off him in waves, adding to his incredibly intimidating air.

"Andy, I—"

Before I could finish my sentence, he interrupted me by shouting, "Stut up! Don't you dare call me like that!"

He raised his hand again. Upon seeing how he was going to strike me again, Summer, who had been standing to the side, hastily grabbed his arm.

She sobbed, "Andy, don't hurt Winter anymore. Maybe she was just… throwing a little tantrum."

Andy's voice softened in an instant when he spoke to Summer.

"You don't have to defend her, Summer. She's always harbored ulterior motives. She's not gentle and kind like you are."

I chewed my bottom lip as I looked at them, gripping the railing of the bed for dear life. My stomach felt like it was on fire while my head continued to throb painfully.

"Don't cry. We'll go back and celebrate soon. I even put in a special order for your favorite diamond ring."

Andy stroked her face before wiping the tears from her eyes, his heart squeezing painfully.

"Thank you, Andy," Summer replied, her eyes brightening as she hugged his arm happily.

When Andy turned to look at me, the warmth in his eyes froze over and turned to glaciers. "It's been eight years, but you still haven't cleaned up your pathetic act. You still like to lie and steal the spotlight out of jealousy."

He sighed deeply before continuing in a disappointed tone, "I can't believe that you're Mom and Dad's biological daughter. I truly regret asking them to bring you home."

Tears streamed down my cheeks and blurred my vision, but I forced a smile.

"What are you smiling for? Are you that amused by what happened today?" he shouted angrily.

"I'm telling you the truth about my stomach cancer. I'm going to die soon. Do you believe me?" My tone was colored by despair as I pointed at the medical record placed on the bedside cabinet.

Andy was stunned for a moment before he gave me a once-over. He scoffed and sneered, "No one would believe you after all your lies, Winter.

"A person with stomach cancer should be taking care of themselves. They wouldn't work in a bar in a Playboy Bunny costume."

Sherman and Jimmy had just made it to my bed, and they glared daggers at me as if I were their sworn enemy.

"You're nothing but a liar, Winter. Did you really think you could swindle us out of our money by pretending to be ill? I'll have you know that you won't be getting a single cent of our family's fortune."

Sherman was wearing a steely expression. He poked my back and even shoved me forward. Fortunately, I was supporting myself against the wall. I would have fallen if I hadn't.

"The Lewis family doesn't need a useless piece of crap like you! You're simply getting your just desserts if you die.

"How dare you try to trick us with your medical records? You're way out of line," Jimmy said coldly.

He ripped the medical record off the clipboard. He didn't glance at the contents even once before tearing it to shreds, letting the scraps flutter to the ground.

Andy shook his head and sighed. He wrapped one arm around Summer's shoulders. "Go home by yourself. It's Summer's coming-of-age party today. You better not have that long face when you show up."

Sherman and Jimmy trailed after them. I watched as my brothers orbited around Summer as they took their leave before sighing deeply.

"But I'm really about to die," I murmured.

When Kenneth, Autumn, and Andy transported my corpse to the funeral parlor, Andy forced Summer and Frank to come along. Sherman and Jimmy had also abandoned their work to accompany me for my last journey. On the way there, Andy switched on my phone and found the messages I had left in the family group chat. He read the messages aloud."Dad, Mom, Andy, Sherman, Jimmy, I wonder if you know that I love all of you a lot. But you always despised me because you thought I was an embarrassment to the family. "You always assumed I only knew how to lie and be stubborn. I was nothing, so I was useless."I didn't deserve to be your daughter. I didn't deserve to be your sister. Truth be told, I also thought of myself as unworthy. "Although you didn't love me very much and always trusted Summer blindly while scolding me, I always thought it was a wonderful feeling to have a family."I was very happy during the last eight years. Will you come to see me when you find out that I'm dead? You sho

Andy stood before the entrance to the morgue in the hospital. He didn't dare go in. His hands were quivering violently along with the rest of his body.An hour ago, he had arrived at the hospital to look into my condition. It was only then that he learned that I, his biological sister, who he had loathed for a long time, had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. I had been at the mercy of my illness for more than 100 days. He had been blinded by Summer's intentional distractions, so the window of opportunity to save me had closed for good. The nurse told him that I was always alone when I came for my check-ups, and she had always felt great sympathy for me."She didn't have money for the treatment. She called her family a few times to tell them she was sick, but her family would always scold her. They were so loud that their voices would echo all around the ward."She was hurting so much. She needed treatment, but nobody was willing to help her. "Near the end, she turned to paink

The video was broadcast on television. It opened with a scene of a dark, underground room. I was being crushed under a fat woman with tattoo-covered arms as she slapped me over and over again. We were surrounded by a few other women who repeatedly smeared glue all over my body.Summer stood a short distance away, cackling arrogantly at the predicament I was stuck in. "Dad and Mom know all about your scandal with the teacher, Winter."I struggled as hard as I could, trying to break free from my confinement. But the women kept me pinned down and stopped me from escaping. The fat woman stuck her fingers into my mouth and pulled harshly. I was in so much agony, my pained cries coming out muffled. The fat woman only got off me after I stopped struggling.I stared at Summer, who was wearing a gleeful expression, and weakly muttered, "I'll tell them everything that happened here."Summer was completely unbothered by my threat and began to laugh sarcastically. "Go ahead! Even if I admit

Noticing the melancholy look on Andy's face, Kenneth grew displeased. "That's enough. There's nothing you can do if you can't contact her. If she wants to be bull-headed, just let her be. I don't believe that she won't show her face here again for the rest of her life."I'm going to teach her a lesson she won't forget once she shows up again. How dare she try to pull a disappearing act on us?""In the next two days, I'm also going to announce to the public that if she continues to stay missing, I'm going to disown her from the Lewis family. Let's see if she'll continue to be stubborn then."Autumn sighed repeatedly as disappointment flickered in her eyes. "Why does she have to make things so difficult for everyone? Today is Summer's wedding day, but she made everyone unhappy again."Seeing how Kenneth's and Autumn's hearts didn't soften despite learning of my disappearance, Summer breathed a sigh of relief.Meanwhile, Andy studied Summer's reactions closely. He didn't miss the g

My soul wandered back to the Lewis residence.Today was Summer's wedding ceremony, so the atmosphere was joyous. Everyone who was someone in the city had stopped by to give their blessings to the bride and groom. They were all seated in the hall. Since they were getting a little bored, they began gossiping among themselves. Everyone recalled that the Lewis family had another daughter, but when they searched for me, they realized I was nowhere to be found."Where did Winter go? Did anyone see her?""She was in a pitiful state the last time I saw her. I wonder what her circumstances will be like after Summer gets married.""I heard that she was chased out of the house!""That's right. The Lewises weren't fond of her and treated her like she was nothing more than a beggar, which is why we just have to get on Summer's good side."Upon hearing their words, an upset expression appeared on Andy's face, who was in charge of welcoming the guests. However, considering that the guests were

On the first day of the New Year, the temperature dropped drastically, and it began to snow.I snuck into an abandoned factory and found a hiding spot where I could curl up. Although I had already layered all the clothes that I owned on myself, I was still trembling violently from the cold. I had spent the last of my money on painkillers, so I didn't have enough to stay in a hotel.I was unwilling to accept Andy's credit card. After all, I was about to die. I didn't want to owe anyone anything. I desperately wanted to find a warm place to stay, but unfortunately, I wasn't lucky enough to have that privilege.Retrieving my outdated phone from my pocket, I typed out a long message with my frostbitten fingers. I wrote down all of my thoughts in the message before sending it to the family group chat. No one had spoken a single word in that group chat before I sent my message. Not long after, a searing pain shot through my stomach. It felt like it was being torn apart like there were wo
