Cozying Up With the Enemy

Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Glass Kettle
I fell asleep amid the pain of multiple fractures throughout my leg, all while listening to the flirting coming from the hospital ward next door.

In my semi-conscious state, I seemed to see Christian Goodman pacing back and forth next to my hospital bed.

Later on, a banging on the door woke me from my sleep.

"Pack your things and follow me back to Rivera Manor, Raelyn. Grandpa wants to see you."

That was my boyfriend Johan Rivera's voice. He had always been so impatient with me.

I forced myself to get out of bed and open the door for him.

Upon opening the door, I was greeted with his disdainful expression.

"Would you look at that? You can still get out of bed and walk around," he said in annoyance. "I guess the car accident wasn't serious, and you're just faking it."

I frowned subconsciously, wanting very much to vent my anger on him.

There was a sudden scream from the ward next door. "Ouch! My leg hurts, Johan!"

Johan immediately became nervous, and he didn't even try to hide his reaction from me.

A moment later, I watched blankly as Johan came out of the ward next door with his first love, Lucy Sherman, in his arms.

"Didn't I tell you not to get out of bed and move around recklessly? I can just carry you wherever you want to go instead," Johan admonished her.

As the two of them passed me, Lucy smiled with a gentle look in her eyes. "Johan always spoils me like this, Raelyn. Sorry for making such a fool of myself in front of you."

Johan hugged her tightly upon hearing this and said coldly to me, "Hurry up and pack your things. I'm heading back to the manor first, so just hail a taxi later. Lucy's always been afraid of the cold, so I don't have the time to spare waiting for you."

I stood alone in the corridor for a long time. It wasn't until a burst of cold air blew past that I came back to my senses.

I shivered before forcing myself to hobble back into the hospital ward and sit down. I honestly didn't have the strength to pack my things.

Memories flashed through my mind, making my head hurt.

I recalled the first time I ever met Johan, when he smashed everything in Rivera Manor to pieces.

The sight of him behaving so hysterically had frightened me so much that all my hair stood on end. I would never forget the sight, especially the moment he turned to glare at me with bloodshot eyes.

Back then, he had fallen out with Scott Rivera—his grandfather—and sworn a vicious oath. "I'll never marry Raelyn Kirchner! If I ever do, I'll die a terrible death!"

He was a man who was practically favored by the gods, so he probably thought that he and I were far too different from each other.

The Kirchners and the Riveras used to be old-time acquaintances. After a huge fire had taken my family from me, it was Scott who took me in and raised me.

The engagement between Johan and I had been arranged by our families long ago, but now, it seemed like we weren't a good match for each other.

From the age of 18, I had lived under their roof for five whole years.

I sighed, not wanting to continue putting up with my situation anymore.

Suddenly, my phone rang—Christian was calling me.

He and I were high school classmates, and he had been pursuing me ever since he first became my deskmate.

However, due to my engagement to Johan, Christian had constantly been at odds with him.

Whenever I got just a little too close to Christian, he would suffer bullying and oppression from Johan due to his status as a poor student.

Because of that, I had always chosen to keep my distance from Christian.

It wasn't until our last class reunion that Christian, who had already evolved from a poor student to a new upstart in the business world, said something to me after getting drunk.

His eyes were shining when he told me half-jokingly, "Since you haven't gotten married to Johan even after being engaged to him for so many years, how about you enter into a contract marriage with me?

"It'd be perfect to curb my parents from urging me to get married."

I came back to my senses right then. Even though I was still hesitating, my hand had already reached for my phone.

"Is your leg injury better now?" asked Christian on the other end.

His voice was as charming as ever, and his first concern was my injury.

Not long afterward, he appeared in the doorway of the hospital ward I was in.

There was snow piled up on his head, but there was also a layer of sweat on his forehead. It was obvious that he had hurried all the way here.

When I agreed to enter into a contract marriage with him, he looked as happy as a child who had just received a birthday gift.

The text message began, "Dear Raelyn, by the time you're reading this, I will no longer be of this world."Where will you be as you read this? Will you be at your most precious company, or in Christian's arms? Or will you be in front of my grave? Will you come and visit me? No, I'm probably flattering myself again."I already expected you not to answer me that night. I'm sure you resent me, and you should. I still remember how much of a scoundrel I was back then. Just thinking about it now makes me want to slap myself."The message—or perhaps it was far more fitting to call it a farewell letter—continued, "The first time I met you, you were huddled in a corner of Rivera Manor and looking at me with fear in your eyes. You looked just like a frightened rabbit."At that time, I wanted to explain to you that you weren't the one I was angry at, so you didn't have to act like that. But just as I was going to speak up, you secretly wiped away your tears, which startled me so much I didn't

The next time I heard about Johan turned out to be news of his death.I was dazed for a moment, and the ringing in my ears persisted for a long time. I simply couldn't believe it.According to medical staff, Lucy hitting him in the head with the flower vase before had resulted in a cerebral hemorrhage, but he continuously refused treatment.I was deeply confused by his suicidal, self-destructive behavior. Why would such an arrogant person who cared so much about his own life do this to himself? My confusion persisted until I heard what Johan's lifelong best friend, Hank Falkner, had to say.It turned out that Johan hadn't been refusing treatment, and it wasn't because of the company's security guards that I escaped abduction that day.On the contrary, it was because Johan had overheard Edwin and Alice's plans to kill me out of revenge. He had snuck out of the hospital to find me a security guard, which caused him to miss the critical time window for treatment. An unpleasant feel

Alice's voice rang out from my phone. "Johan's in very bad condition, Rae, but he's refusing treatment. Can you come over and talk some sense into him?"It turned out that the woman who used to be so dismissive of me and frequently yelled at me could do a complete 180 and speak to me in such a soft tone.I glanced at Christian before turning down her request. It was about time I properly severed ties with certain people and matters.Half a month passed by quietly. During that time, I started up my own design company and became a rising star in the industry.I had loved drawing since I was a child, so I had now more or less fulfilled my childhood ambition.Just when I thought I had already gotten my life in order, one of my newly designed products was accused of plagiarism. For a while, I was doxxed by netizens and suffered verbal abuse online.Strangely, no matter how I looked into the incident, I couldn't determine who was responsible for this malicious setup. In fact, I was

In the end, Lucy was imprisoned for intentional injury while Johan remained in a coma at the hospital. The reputation of Christian's company was immediately restored, and it became the only one left standing of the three business giants.I was at the police station to give my statement and hand Scott's documents over to the police.Christian had finished his press conference and was currently waiting for me at the police station's entrance. The moment I walked out of the police station and caught sight of him, I realized that I didn't know how I should face him.He turned to face me, still wearing that reassuring smile of his, and smoothly stepped forward to take my bag from me.When he saw my upset expression, he gently stroked my face and asked, "What's wrong?"I shook my head and sighed, then replied, "Sorry for making you experience such a terrible wedding. It looks like I'm just as the Riveras said—a jinx. I bring trouble wherever I go, and now I've caused you trouble as we

Our wedding was held as scheduled the next day, and it was celebrated with great fanfare. The venue was packed with reporters, which made it look rather like a professional press conference. As I looked at Christian, who was fixing his clothes in the dressing room, I felt a twinge of dismay.Getting married was a major life event, after all, not to mention the fact that Christian was a rather well-known public figure. However, I was using the wedding as an excuse to publicly expose Rivera Group's scandal. It might be beneficial to Goodman Group, but I still felt guilty toward Christian for doing this.At present, I was already standing on the red carpet outdoors, walking forward step by step. Christian was gazing at me with eyes filled with love. The moment we exchanged rings, an uninvited guest burst in, stirring up a commotion. The reporters on the scene quickly swarmed the newcomer.Everyone knew of the usually frivolous and wanton Johan Rivera. The reporters continued to s

I couldn't help but sneer at Johan's condescending look. He was looking at me as if he were doing me a favor."I don't owe you anything, Johan, so don't look at me like that. Also, why should I go with you?"Johan's expression, which was usually high-spirited, changed slightly. It showed some gentleness for once. "I know that you're angry at me, but you don't know a thing about Christian's background. Aren't you afraid of marrying him? Come with me, and I can pretend that none of this happened."I looked at him quietly for a moment before sighing. "Shouldn't I be more afraid of being around you? I'm afraid that you'll come up with ways to humiliate me again the moment I do something that isn't to your liking."I'll remember the times you helped me, but I'll also never forget the times you bullied me. I won't go with you, so please leave."Johan's eyes became downcast. There was a hint of guilt on his face, and he looked at me as if he were at a loss. The sky was overcast, and I c
