MEEKA'S POV::

A hollow laugh catches in my throat, sounding way too loud in the quiet room.

God, what the hell is actually wrong with me?

This is exactly what I’ve been begging for ever since I walked out of his apartment, right? I wanted space, and total silence. I wanted him to just leave me the hell alone.

So why does finally getting exactly what I asked for feel so much like losing something I can't afford to lose?

I stare back down at my computer screen, watching the numbers on the spreads

    MEEKA'S POV::“No, no, stop. Move it maybe three inches left.”The girl standing by the front display completely freezes up, her palm glued to the dummy's fiberglass shoulder. She blinks at me like she's waiting for the punchline.“The mannequin?”“The whole setup.”She looks out toward the glass, then back at me. “Wait, why?”“It’s swallowing all the natural light coming through the window.”“Oh..... got it, got it.” She instantly digs her heels in and starts dragging the entire heavy rig over.I stand there, arms crossed, watching the carpet bunch up under her sneakers for a second before I finally nod. “Yeah. Exactly like that. Perfect.”The whole space is absolute chaos around me right now. Over by the back wall, somebody is blasting a silk gown with a hand steamer, choking on the exhaust. Two guys are shoving a pair of clunky chrome garment racks into position while another girl leans half off a stepladder, endlessly adjusting a row of leather clutches on the display shelf.Under

  • Craved By My Fiance's Brother   Chapter 121: It Doesn't Matter

    Because somewhere deep down in the quietest corner of my heart, a stupid, foolish little part of me had always held onto the hope that if I ever truly needed her, she would choose me over the money. But today proved I’ve been waiting for a fantasy.I take a ragged breath. “I know you’re angry.”“You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself,” she snarls.I stare right back at her, but the words don't sting anymore. The armor is finally up. I’ve heard too many of her insults over the years for them to draw blood anymore.“I’m not,” I say softly.Her brows knot together. “What?”“I’m not ashamed.” I turn my eyes toward the grand staircase. “I am terrified. I’m confused as hell. And I have absolutely no clue what happens tomorrow.” I look back at her one last time. “But I am not ashamed.”Her lips part, but I cut her off before she can spit out another word.“I spent my entire life doing everything expected of me,” I say, swallowing hard. “I’m done.”“Meeka—”“Stop interrupting me, Mom! I

  • Craved By My Fiance's Brother   Chapter 12: My Very Own Mother

    Total silence hangs between us as she says nothing.I stand there, waiting, but she still doesn’t say a word.My eyes burn with hot, stinging tears, but I refuse to let them fall yet. “When?”Still, absolute silence.The pain nested deep inside me for decades comes pouring out like a broken dam.“You never asked me!” My voice climbs higher, shaking with years of built-up rage. “You never cared enough to ask!”“That is not fair, and it is not true!”“It is true!”She actually flinches back, but I’m done backing down.“You cared about what looked good on paper! You cared about what the neighbors and the country club members would say behind our backs! You cared about having the right shiny last name attached to ours! You cared about saving Dad’s falling business, and you cared about making sure I was the perfect little trophy daughter you could show off at galas!”“That isn’t why I pushed for—”“But you never gave a single damn about whether I was actually happy!” The words tear straigh

  • Craved By My Fiance's Brother   Chapter 119: What I Wanted

    I stop at the very bottom of the staircase, my shoes sinking into the heavy carpet as I take a breath to steady my racing pulse.Of course. I should’ve known she wouldn’t give me even five minutes to breathe before pouncing. My mother comes storming right out of the sitting room, still wearing that impossibly elegant silk gown she picked out for the wedding. Her hair is a little loose now, stray dark strands framing her face, and her makeup isn’t quite as pristine as it was when we pulled up to the church steps an hour ago.Honestly, I’ve never seen her look this furious.“Do you have any actual idea what you’ve just done?” she screeches, her voice echoing off the high ceilings.I just stand there and stare at her.For some strange reason, I feel this bizarre, heavy calm washing over me. Maybe it’s because I’ve already cried so much inside my own head today that my tear ducts are completely dry. Or maybe it’s just because there’s simply nothing left inside me to break.“I called off

  • Craved By My Fiance's Brother   Chapter 118: Just Drive

    MEEKA'S POV::Everything is a total blur. I honestly don't even remember walking out of those heavy wooden doors, and I definitely don't remember who called out my name first.I have no idea how many camera flashes are blinding me, or how many frantic voices are trailing behind me as I hurry down that endless aisle, my heart hammering like crazy against my ribs.All I know is that I just keep walking.I walk right past all the shocked, gaping faces. Past the furious, suffocating whispers floating through the pews. I walk past every single person in that room who spent the last several months thinking they had my entire life mapped out, convinced they knew exactly how my story was supposed to end.I just keep moving my feet until I finally reach the exit doors. I grab the handles, heave them open, and throw myself into the open air.The second I step outside, a blast of cool wind hits my face fair and square, causing me to freeze.For one breathless second, I just stand there on the t

  • Craved By My Fiance's Brother   Chapter 117: Is That Fear?

    NATHANIEL'S POV::By the time I pull up to the venue, the place is already completely overrun.Honestly, calling it a wedding venue feels like a stretch right now. It isn’t about love or romance or any of that—it’s just a sea of people. Wall-to-wall business associates, old family friends, bloodthirsty reporters, heavy-hitting investors, and politicians. Basically, every opportunistic climber who’s spent the last decade trying to crawl close enough to the DeWitt name to catch a stray crumb of influence.It’s an absolute circus, which means it's exactly the kind of crowd my father wanted.And, truth be told, it’s exactly what I expected.I open the car door, swing my legs out, and take a quick second to smooth down the cuff of my jacket. The moment my shoes hit the pavement, a barrage of flashbulbs goes off, blinding me for a fraction of a second.“Nathaniel! Over here!”“Look this way, Nathaniel!”“Congratulations, man!”I don't lose my composure for a second. I instantly flash them

    The drive to Meeka’s place is even quieter than the night itself.She’s slumped in the passenger seat, buried in the jacket I practically forced onto her the second she stopped shaking enough to walk. Her hands are tucked deep into the sleeves, like she’s trying to disappear inside the fabric. Sin
