In the Alpha’s private chambers, a single fire guttered in the hearth, casting a restless orange glow across the walls.

Kael sat slouched in the high-backed chair by the table, a half-emptied decanter of strong, spiced liquor within reach. The haze of drink dulled his thoughts, though not enough to let his guard drop completely.

Rheya, draped in a gown of silken black, leaned against the table. “You’ve been drinking,” she murmured, pouring another glass before he could refuse. “It’s been a long day, Alpha. Let me make it better.”

His eyes narrowed on her. “ Better how? I don’t need you to make anything better, Rheya.”

Still, he took the glass. The burn in his throat was like pain, but a slower, more dangerous warmth pooled low in his stomach. He knew better than to Rheya when she insisted they have a drink together after they'd spoken about a deal with their neighboring pack.

“I heard you sent for Nyra earlier,” Rheya said lightly, pretending casual interest. “Why?”

Nyra descended the staircase slowly with her chin held high though her heart hammered against her chest. Her bare presence shifted the air in the hall, drawing every gaze in the room. She stopped directly in front of Kael, her stance unwavering though her insides quivered.“I am the one,” she repeated, her voice firm.Lord Renek froze, his sword halfway raised. His eyes bored into her, disbelief visible across his features. The weapon slipped from his grip, clattering against the floor. He shook his head slowly, as if denying his own vision.“No, it can’t be you,” he rasped.Kael’s frown deepened. “What do you mean by that?” he demanded. “Why stop now? What do you know?”But Renek’s jaw locked, refusing to explain. His silence fractured in a violent roar as he swung his glare back to Nyra. “Enough! Guards or no guards, I want her executed this instant. Do it now!”Nyra almost flinched, her body stiffening. What had she expected from the man who'd killed her mother? In as much as she'

Nyra didn’t know how it happened. Only that the moment her fingers touched Kael’s burning skin, the storm inside him began to calm. The violent glow coursing through his veins dulled, the red in his eyes softened, and his breath, though ragged, but eventually steadied.Kael’s chest heaved as he straightened slowly, regaining control. Their closeness lingered, their gazes locked in silence. Not until the door slammed wider, jolting them out of it.“What the hell is going on here?” Kendall’s voice rang, laced with fury. Her eyes darted from Nyra’s hand on Kael to the flicker of tension between them. She stormed in fully with her heels striking against the marble floor, her face twisted with rage.“Don’t you dare touch him, bitch!” she spat, reaching for Nyra. But before her hand could make contact, Kael seized Kendall’s wrist, his grip stronger and with an unexpected twist, he flung her across the room. She hit the floor hard, wincing from the impact.Nyra gasped, her eyes widening, but

Kael returned to the hall with his strides rigid, his composure an unyielding mask. Marcus was already waiting, leaning casually against the long table, a glass of wine in hand.“Why do you look like that?” Marcus asked, one brow raised. “What happened with the so-called girl called Kendall?”Kael poured himself a drink, the liquid sloshing harder than it should have. “Nothing,” he said flatly. “I handled it.”Marcus tilted his head, studying him. “You sure? Because you don't look like it.”Kael’s jaw clenched. “Drop it, Marcus.” He raised his glass, forcing the bitter burn down his throat. But the taste did nothing to cleanse the words he had spat at Nyra. Fiancée. Mate. He’d seen her face—the way it broke though she tried to hide it. And the memory gnawed at him.How could he undo the lie he had told?Kendall was no damn mate to him.Marcus shrugged his shoulders. “Suit yourself. But there’s something else you need to hear.” His voice hardened. “Lucian is closing in on you. He’s not

Kael said nothing as he escorted Nyra back to her chamber, his strides long and forceful. His hand never once left hers, though his grip was tight, restrained, as though he was holding himself back from tearing the walls apart with his bare hands. When they reached her room, he finally released her. The sudden absence of his touch left her Nyra's skin tingling, but his words that followed were enough to stop any lingering warmth.“Do not misunderstand,” Kael started, his voice low. “I brought you here only to keep you from bleeding all over the damned hall. Nothing more. Whatever you think this is–it isn’t.”Nyra froze where she stood, his words digging deeper than any shard of glass could.A part of her chest twisted, but she lifted her chin, masking the sting with a brittle coldness. “Don’t flatter yourself, Alpha. I wouldn’t mistake your pity for anything else.”The door opened then, and a maid entered quietly with a small kit. She bowed quickly and handed it to Kael before walking

A few minutes later, Alaric returned to Kael’s chambers, his footsteps brisk yet careful. The moment he entered, Kael’s eyes snapped to him.“Why the hell did you allow her into my castle?” Kael demanded, his voice thunderous. The air seemed to thicken, charged with his fury.Alaric’s composure didn’t falter, though his jaw tightened. “I didn’t. She walked in of her own accord. I had no notice of it.”Kael’s hands curled into fists against the edge of his desk. His voice lowered, more dangerous than the roar that had come before. “Do you take me for a fool, Alaric? You think Kendall dares to barge in here without someone opening the doors for her?”Alaric’s eyes darkened, but he didn’t yield. “If you suspect me of betraying your word, then say it, Alpha. But I have no reason to side with her. We both know who pulled the strings. Lord Renek.”Kael’s jaw clenched so tightly it ached. His father. Of course. “She is not my mate,” Kael spat, his voice trembling with restrained rage. “And

Days had passed but Nyra had seen little of Raina except when the she walked quietly into her chamber with trays of food. It felt like she was avoiding her. When a sudden knock sounded at her door that morning, Nyra rose cautiously. One of the maids stood with her head held high. Not a single sign of respect on her expression.“You are summoned for breakfast downstairs.”Nyra hesitated. It had been days since she had taken any meal outside the confines of her room. Still, she followed. Her steps echoed down the grand staircase into the long dining hall. The scent of roasted meat and fresh bread welcomed her first and her stomach growled. But then she noticed Kael's chair stood empty.Instead, Alaric occupied his space, already seated with a dish before him. His eyes lifted as she entered, the faintest flicker of acknowledgment crossing his stern features.Nyra moved quietly to her seat. The maids began to serve her, but she did not lift her utensils. She sat with her hands folded, her
