Mr. Armani lets out a harsh scoff as he stares at the cheque again. Irritation and disbelief twist his face. “What do you think you’re doing? Trying to deceive and defraud me just like your father?” He glares at me. Mom leans closer and whispers, her voice shaking with shock. “Brooklyn, where did you get this kind of money from?” “I’ll explain everything when we get home.” I whisper back. Even though disbelief still fills her eyes, she pulls back and stays quiet. I turn my attention back to Mr. Armani. Seeing him like this almost makes me want to laugh. He should be happy his money is finally coming back, but instead he looks pissed. Of course. This was never really about the debt. It was about using it to control and crush my family. Well, that bullshit ends today. I didn’t sell my soul to the devil for nothing. “Why would I try to deceive you, Mr. Armani?” I ask, keeping my voice calm and light. A small, teasing smile curves my lips. The kind I know will piss him off. “What? You think it’s fake? Want to check?” He stays silent for a moment, eyes darting between me, the cheque, the confused Captain, and back to me. His face hardens, darkness flashing across it. Then, he points the cheque at me, his voice low and threatening. “I’ll have my secretary call the bank right now to verify it. And trust me, we’ll get the answer while we’re still standing here.” His teeth flash. “God help you if this cheque is fake. Because if it is, I swear I’ll throw you in that filthy cell for a little family reunion with your thieving father.” Hearing this, Mom leans in again, fear all over her face. But I speak before she can. “Sure. Let’s do it. I don’t have all day.” Mr. Armani scoffs like I’ve lost my mind. The air in the office grows thick with tension as they start the verification process. Mr. Armani calls his secretary in: a sharply dressed middle-aged man who follows orders like a trained dog. The Captain just sits there, clearly biased because of the Armanis’ power in this city. Corrupt bastard. We watch as the secretary snaps a photo of the cheque and sends it. Minutes later, the bank calls back. Mr. Armani puts the call on speaker, a dark, triumphant look on his face. The bank employee’s voice fills the room. “We’ve verified the details, Mr. Armani. The cheque is authentic and the funds are available. Would you like us to deposit it immediately?” The color drains from Mr. Armani’s face instantly. He turns pale as a ghost. Mom lets out a heavy breath of relief and almost collapses. I quickly wrap my arm around her to hold her steady. Tears stream down her cheeks as she pants. Mr. Armani stares at me like he’s seen a ghost. For me, it feels like a massive stone finally lifts off my chest. Honestly, for a second I was terrified Izaac had played me and the cheque was fake. Thank fuck it wasn’t. “I… I can’t accept this,” Mr. Armani stammers, still shaking his head. “There’s no way you could have raised this amount…” “What matters is that the debt is cleared,” I reply, letting the smile return to my lips. “You don’t need to worry about how I got the money. Just stop messing with my family. Or you’ll have to deal with me directly.” His face turns red with rage. “You little brat. You think paying this tiny amount gives you the right to speak to me like that?!” I ignore him and look at the Captain, who is now avoiding my eyes, shame written all over his face. “Now that the debt is settled,” I say with a sharp smile, “I believe my father will be released immediately. Right, Captain?” “R-right…” he stutters, clearing his throat. He grabs the desk phone. “I’ll have the officers release him right away.” “Thank you.” I keep the smile on my face. “My mother and I will wait outside.” With my arm looped around my mom’s hand, I lead her out of the office. The moment we sit on the bench in the lobby, she turns to me and starts firing questions. “Half a million dollars, Brook!” she whispers, eyes wide. “Where did you get that kind of money? Are you hiding something from me? I’m worried sick. What’s going on?” I sigh and take her hands, squeezing them gently. “I know you’re scared and overwhelmed. But I need you to trust me, Mom. I’ll explain everything once we get home with Dad. This isn’t the right place to talk.” She still has a thousand questions in her eyes, but thankfully, she nods. I pull her head gently onto my shoulder as we wait. My mind drifts back to Izaac, my stomach knotting tightly as it does so. I agreed to pretend to be his fiancée for a few months. Just long enough for him to find a real wife before his deadline so he can inherit the company. Simple exchange. He pays the debt, I play the part. But he has no idea what he’s done. He has no fucking idea that he’s just gave his greatest enemy full access, close proximity, and the perfect position to destroy him and his entire family from the inside. And I can’t wait to start.[ IZAAC ]“Izaac!” Mother’s shrill voice slices through my sleep like a knife. The bedroom door flies open, followed by the sharp click of angry heels storming across the floor.I groan, bury my face deeper into the pillow for half a second, then force my eyes open. Bright morning sunlight cuts through the sheer curtains, blinding me.“What the hell am I hearing about you and that Wheeler girl?” she snaps. “You better get up and tell me it’s not true!”I sit up slowly, dragging a hand through my messy hair. Paris stands beside her, arms folded, one perfectly arched brow raised at me like I’m on trial.“This is what I get for spending the night here?” I mutter, voice still rough with sleep.“Quit playing games, Izaac. Explain this right now.” Mother shoves her phone in my face. “Tell me this isn’t you!”I focus on the screen. A blurry but unmistakable photo stares back at me.Me. Brooklyn. In my car. Lips locked in a kiss.Well… almost locked. It was staged, of course. Right after

[ BROOKLYN ]For almost a full minute, I just stare at Izaac, wondering if this man has completely lost his mind. He’s the biggest playboy in Miami. He can have any woman he wants with a snap of his fingers. So why the hell is he standing here, offering to wipe out half a million dollars in debt just to make me his wife? This is way too fishy. He’s a fool if he thinks I’ll fall for it.“You really are a mad man, aren’t you?” I snap, snatching my arm away from his grip and stepping back to put space between us. I shake my head in disbelief and drag my fingers through my hair. “You know what? Forget this. Get out, or I’ll call the cops on you right now.”“Fine then,” he replies with a casual shrug, like none of this matters. “I already thought you might turn me down. So I came prepared with a simpler option.”I stare at him, still shaking my head.“You’re sick. Why the fuck would I agree to anything with you?”“Well…” He slips his hand back into his pocket and starts pacing slowly th
[ BROOKLYN ]“So sorry I have to run, hunnie. I hate that I have to leave you to handle all this alone.”Carmen steps out of the cafe and joins me on the sidewalk where I am unloading fresh pastries from the delivery van. She looks polished as always in her fitted skirt and blouse.“That’s okay, Miss Cooper. You don’t have to apologize. This is my job.” I offer her a polite smile, balancing two warm, bulky boxes of croissants in my arms while keeping my composure.“Come on, Brooklyn. I’ve told you already. Call me by my first name, okay?” She pats my arm teasingly.“Right. Carmen.” I smile and nod.“That’s what I’m talking about.” She laughs softly, then leans in and plants a light kiss on my cheek. “See you later, Brook.”With that, she hurries off toward her car parked nearby, stilettos clicking sharply against the pavement. She flashes me one last bright smile through the rolled-down window before driving away.I stand there for a few seconds, watching her car disappear down the s
[ IZAAC ]The tires hiss against the curb as Russell’s car roll to a stop in front of my apartment building. I shove the door open and step out into the cool night air, my shoes hitting the pavement hard. Russell’s voice cut through the darkness behind me.“Izaac, wait—”But I don’t stop. I storm toward the entrance, shoulders tight and my jaw locked. All through the drive he kept asking why I’d walked out of the skating rink looking pale and shaken as if I’d seen a ghost? If only he knows how close he was to the truth.I never answered him, but the silence only made him push harder. And right now the last thing I need is anyone near me.“You should head back home, Russell,” I say without turning around, my voice flat and final. “I want to be left alone.”Behind me, his footsteps slow down, then stops completely.I push through the glass doors of the building, letting them swing shut with a heavy thud. Inside, the quiet hit me like a wall. I head straight for the bar in the livin
[ IZAAC ] A WEEK LATERThe sharp crash of files and office supplies hitting the floor splits the air, followed immediately by Father’s furious voice, barking over Mr. Wheeler’s strained protests.“Don’t fucking tell me you don’t know what your daughter did or why she did it!” Father storms closer to Nolan, jabbing a finger into his face, his skin flushed red with rage. “You expect me to believe this wasn’t planned? That you and your precious daughter didn’t strike some filthy deal with the paparazzi to humiliate us in public?”“We’ve been friends for over a decade, Odion,” Mr. Wheeler says, his voice low and heavy with shame and desperation. “You should know me better than this. I told you… I’ll speak to Brooks. I’ll make her see reason—”“It’s been a damned week, Nolan!” Father roars, grabbing a chair and hurling it across the office. It crashes against the wall, splintering on impact. “A whole week, and you’ve done nothing! Do you have any idea what that marriage clause means to
[ BROOKLYN ]If Izaac is surprised by the way I say his name as if we’ve known each other before this moment, he doesn’t show it. Instead, he simply stops in front of me and takes my hand. His touch is gentle and careful in a way that causes the heat on my skin to rise. The kind that might've swep
[ BROOKLYN ]“What have you done?!” I scream, my voice breaking as tears spill freely down my face. My heart feels like it’s tearing itself apart, bleeding out inside my chest. My eyes flick back to the window, to the body lying unnaturally still on the ground below.I want to believe that isn’t my
[ BROOKLYN ]“Who did you say is responsible for your pregnancy?”My mother’s voice trembles as she asks the question. She sits across from me on the bed, her face drained of color. From downstairs, the muffled sounds of laughter, music, and clinking glasses drift up. The Armani anniversary party i
