~YVONNE POV~

I got off the floor.

My legs felt like they were made of water, but I forced them to hold me up. I wiped my face with the back of my hand, smearing tears and snot across my cheek.

Pathetic. I was so pathetic, but I didn't move toward Arthur, I couldn't, not yet. Every time I blinked, I saw them. Arthur's hands in Holly's hair. Her lips on his neck. The way he looked at her.

My fists clenched at my sides.

The stranger stood behind me, so close, I could feel the heat of him at my back, reliable and steady. Like a wall I could lean against if I wanted to but I didn't lean.

Arthur's eyes flicked from me to the stranger, then back to me. His jaw tightened.

"Who is he?" Arthur asked. His voice was strong, controlled, like he was the one who had the right to ask questions right now. I almost laughed, almost.

"That's what you want to ask me?" My voice came out rough. Broken. "That's what you want to talk about right now?"

Arthur's face didn't change. "Yvonne…."

"Do you even feel guilty?" The words spilled out before I could stop them. "Do you feel anything at all?"

For a second…just a second….something flashed across his face, maybe guilt or regret? It was gone before I could be sure. He stretched his hand toward me. Palm up. Like he was offering me something.

"Come here," he said, softer now. "Let's talk about this. Just the two of us."

I stared at his hand. I should've been angry. I should've screamed at him. Thrown something. Slapped him across the face and walked away.

But I didn't.

I couldn't. Because a part of me….the stupid, desperate, naive part….wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe there was an explanation. That maybe it wasn't what it looked like. That maybe he still loved me.

My feet moved before my brain could catch up, one step, then another, I reached for his hand. Behind me, the stranger laughed. It wasn't a happy laugh. It was low and harsh and mean. The kind of laugh that made your skin crawl.

I froze. My fingers hovered inches from Arthur's. I turned my head to look at the stranger. He was smiling again. That same dangerous smile from before. But now there was something else in his eyes. Something darker.

Entertainment. No….contempt.

Arthur's face went red. "What the hell is so funny?"

The stranger tilted his head, hands sliding into his pockets, in a relaxed way, like he had all the time in the world. "You haven't changed a bit, big brother," he said, his voice smooth and cold. "Still the same jerk you've always been."

The air left the hallway.

Arthur's hand dropped. His eyes went wide. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Liam?" Arthur's voice cracked on the name.

Liam.

Liam.

I blinked, my brain scrambling to catch up.

This was him? Arthur's stepbrother? The illegitimate one he always complained about? The one who thought he could steal Arthur's birthright, who didn't know his place, who should've stayed overseas where he belonged?

I looked at Liam again. He didn't look like someone who'd been sent away in shame. He looked like someone who owned the room, the building and the whole damn world.

Arthur took a step back. His confident disguise broke down just a little. "What are you doing here?"

Arthur's voice was tight now and weakened.

Liam's smile widened.

"I came back." He paused, letting the words sink in. Then his eyes slid to me, slow and intentional. "And it looks like I got here just in time." His gaze dropped to my hand….still halfway stretched toward Arthur.

"Tell me, Yvonne," Liam said, my name rolling off his tongue like he had said it a thousand times before. "Does he even know your favorite color? Or is he too busy with blondes to notice?"

My stomach twisted.

Arthur's jaw clenched. "Liam, I swear to God…."

"Relax." Liam's voice was ice. "I'm not here to ruin your fun. I'm here to take back what's mine." He stepped forward and closer, close enough that I could smell his cologne…woodsy, expensive, nothing like Arthur's.

Close enough that when he leaned down, his lips were right next to my ear.

"Starting with her."

~YVONNE POV ~The cab driver kept glancing at me in the rearview mirror.I dragged the red dress down for the hundredth time. It didn't budge. Still sat just above mid-thigh, still showed more leg than I had ever shown in public."You sure this is the right address, miss?"I looked out the window at the street. Broke down pavement. Graffiti on the walls. A guy pissing against a dumpster twenty feet away.847 W Randolph."Yeah," I said. "I am sure." He pulled over. I paid him and got out.The dress rode up immediately.I yanked it down, my heels clicking on the dirty sidewalk as I stood there like an idiot, staring at the building in front of me.It didn't look like anything. Just a brick wall. A single door. No sign. No windows. This had to be a mistake.I pulled out my phone, checked Liam's text again.'Liam: 847 W Randolph. 8 PM. Wear the red dress. Don't be late.'I looked at the building again. Then at the street. A homeless guy was snuggled in a sleeping bag across the road. Two

~YVONNE POV~I wasn't used to this. To being looked at. To have my body on display. It took me six months before I could stand naked in front of Arthur. And even then, he would turn off the lights.Said it was more romantic that way. I had believed him. Told myself it was sweet. Intimate. Now I wondered if he just didn't want to look. But with Liam, it was different. He made me feel like a woman. Not the right kind. Not the kind he wanted. But a woman.Arthur always said I had the body for it. Average-big chest. Hourglass shape. A face people called pretty when they were being nice.'Those looks are wasted on you,' he had told me once. 'You don't know how to use them.' And he was right.I did not. But standing there in front of Liam, I wondered what it would feel like to learn. The last dress was wine-colored. It was short, tight. Bodycon, Monica called it.I got it over my hips, but the zipper was in the back and I couldn't reach it. I twisted. Stretched. My fingers brushed the pull

~YVONNE POV~Liam pulled up in front of a boutique I had never noticed before. All glass. Clean white walls. The kind of place where nothing had a price tag because if you had to ask, you couldn't afford it.The kind of place Arthur probably took Holly. I stared through the windshield, my bag squeezed tight in my lap.He turned off the engine."What are we doing here?""Shopping." He opened his door and got out, but I did not move.He walked around to my side, pulled open the passenger door, and looked down at me. His face gave nothing away. Not impatience. Not annoyance. Just expectation."Come on.""I can't afford—""I didn't ask if you could afford it." His voice was flat. "Rule number one: you do what I say."He walked toward the boutique entrance without checking if I followed. I sat there for another three seconds, my hands squeezing my bag so hard my knuckles turned white. My pulse hammered in my throat. This felt wrong. All of it. But I couldn't name why. Then I got out.The s

~YVONNE’S POV~The mirror showed me a coward.Black jeans I had bought two years ago and never worn because the waistband sat too low on my hips. An off-shoulder cardigan that kept sliding down my arm no matter how many times I yanked it back up.I looked stupid. My closet was a graveyard behind me....every hanger bent under the weight of gray, beige, black. Safe colors. Invisible colors. The kind Arthur never complained about because he never looked at me long enough to notice.I had ripped through all of it this morning. Every drawer. Every shelf. Searching for something...anything...that didn't scream "please don't see me."This was all I had.Tight jeans and a cardigan that wouldn't stay put.Uncomfortable, Liam had said. Wear something that makes you feel exposed. I tugged the fabric back over my shoulder. It slipped down. Again.God, I hated this.My phone sat face-up on the bed.Liam: "The corner of Michigan and Oak. 11 AM. Don't be late."Ten minutes. I had ten minutes to walk

~YVONNE’S POV~ The car was way nicer than anything I had ever been in. Leather seats, windows so dark you could barely see outside. The ride was so quiet and smooth, it barely felt real. I sat there, stiff as a board, hands clamped in my lap, doing my best to focus on the road ahead and not freak out. Meanwhile, Liam drove like he was totally in control, looking like the car was made just for him, like the whole road was his. "Where are we going?" I tried to sound normal, but my voice sounded smaller than I meant. "Somewhere private." He didn't look at me. Just kept his eyes ahead. "Arthur can't find out about this, right?" My stomach twisted. What was I thinking? Seriously, how did I get here - sitting in a stranger's car, letting him take me who-knows-where, all because he said he would show me how to hold onto my cheating boyfriend? When did things get so embarrassing? "Relax," Liam said, like he knew I was about to panic. "I am not going to hurt you." I didn't respon

  • Craving the wrong brother : His obsession    005

~YVONNE’S POV~ I went back to work, pretending nothing had happened. What else was I supposed to do? Arthur told me we were fine. He said he forgave me for overreacting, that things would be okay as long as I stopped making such a big deal out of it. So I did. I got dressed. Fixed my hair. I tried to hide the circles under my eyes with concealer, but honestly, it didn't fool anyone. Then I headed in. The office felt off. Or maybe it was just me. I sat at my desk right outside Arthur's door, pretending to read emails. The words kept sliding around - ten minutes staring at the same one, not a clue what it said. Across the room, Holly strolled by. She didn't look at me. Didn't even fake it. But I caught the corner of her mouth curling up over her coffee, that smug little smile she tried to hide. My stomach clenched. Did she know I'd figured it out? Had Arthur told her I caught them? Maybe they laughed about it - maybe I'd never really know. I forced myself to stare at my comp
