One wrong word and his whole world would come crashing down.

Dane wiped the sweat from his face as he stepped into the quiet locker room after morning practice. The team had already cleared out, their laughter fading toward the mess hall. He tossed his gear into his locker and reached for a clean shirt when the door clicked shut behind him. Heavy footsteps echoed on the tile.

“Well, well. If it isn’t the big hero himself.”

Dane turned fast. Ezra Kane leaned against the lockers, arms crossed, that smug grin fixed on his face. His green eyes locked onto Dane with predatory focus.

“What do you want, Kane?” Dane asked, voice steady despite the spike in his pulse. “Practice is over. Go bother someone else.”

Ezra pushed off the lockers and stepped closer. “Oh, I think you’ll want to hear this, Wilder. Or should I say, the guy who can’t even shift on a quiet night in the woods?”

Dane’s stomach dropped. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Ezra shot back, grin widening. “Last night. I was running the trails after my second-place finish. Heard noises in the clearing. Saw you on your knees, groaning, begging your wolf to come out. It never did.”

Dane’s hands clenched into fists. “You were spying on me?”

“Spying?” Ezra laughed sharply. “I was just running. You’re the one putting on a show. The great Dane Wilder, academy golden boy, can’t shift. How long have you been faking it? All those wins, all that talk about pack strength—lies.”

…

“Keep your voice down,” Dane hissed, stepping chest to chest with him. “You don’t know what you’re messing with.”

Ezra didn’t flinch. “I know plenty. I saw you fail twice. Your body locked up. The things you said—‘My parents trusted me,’ ‘I can’t keep faking it.’ Pathetic.”

Dane’s face burned. He wanted to swing but held back. “What do you want? Here to ruin me? Go ahead. Tell everyone.”

“Not yet.” Ezra’s eyes sharpened. “Meet me tonight. Hidden clearing behind the old storage sheds. Nine sharp. We train. I help you figure out why your wolf won’t show. You show up, or I start talking. One word to the coach or the team chat, and your captaincy is gone by lunch.”

Dane swallowed hard, pride twisting painfully. “You think I’d trust you? My rival?”

“You don’t have a choice,” Ezra replied with a shrug. “Come alone. Or tomorrow the whole academy knows the truth.”

The silence stretched. Dane’s mind raced, but he had no escape. “Fine,” he growled. “I’ll be there. But if this is a joke, you’ll regret it.”

“Threats from the guy who can’t shift?” Ezra chuckled. “Cute. See you tonight, Wilder.”

He sauntered out, leaving Dane to slam his locker shut. His hands shook as he changed. He had worked too hard to build this image—now this arrogant rival held it all in his grasp.

The day dragged through classes and meetings, but Dane’s thoughts stayed fixed on the night ahead. By nine, he slipped out of the dorms and made his way to the hidden clearing, tucked behind thick brush and old trees. Moonlight barely pierced the canopy.

Ezra waited, leaning against a tree with a duffel bag at his feet. “You showed. Smart.”

“Let’s get this over with,” Dane said sharply. “What training can a track guy offer?”

Ezra unzipped the bag, revealing resistance bands and weighted vests. “Library research on old techniques. Forcing the shift through stress and movement. Start with ten perimeter runs at full speed. Then push-ups. Focus on your wolf the whole time.”

Dane eyed the gear skeptically but complied. They ran hard, feet pounding the dirt. Ezra kept pace, barking encouragement. “Faster! Picture the wolf breaking free—claws, fur, power!”

“Easy for you,” Dane panted. “You shift whenever you want. This isn’t working. I feel nothing but tired.”

“Again,” Ezra ordered. “Drop for fifty push-ups. Eyes closed. Breathe deep. Let it rise in your chest.”

Dane hit the ground, arms burning. Sweat poured down his face. “This is stupid. Nothing’s happening.”

“Keep going,” Ezra said, crouching nearby. “I saw you last night—you were close. What does it feel like?”

“Fire in my bones. Everything locks up. No release.” Dane pushed through the reps. “Why do you care? You hate me.”

Ezra laughed. “I like winning. Beating you fairly beats holding this secret. Talk. When did you first realize you couldn’t shift?”

“I was fourteen,” Dane grunted. “Full moon ceremony. Everyone changed easily. I froze. Dad covered, said late bloomer. It never came.”

“Harsh,” Ezra muttered. “My family pushes me hard too. Always first. Get up—jumping jacks, high knees. Drive it!”

They moved through more drills: burpees, sprints, resistance work. Ezra’s commands filled the clearing. “Harder! Use that fire from leading the team!”

“It’s not the same,” Dane shot back, chest heaving. “This is chasing something missing. You’re enjoying this too much.”

“Maybe,” Ezra admitted with a smirk. “But I’m helping. Fifty more.”

The session intensified, but the final sprint went wrong. Dane’s leg cramped violently. He stumbled and crashed to the ground.

“Get up,” Ezra said.

“Back off,” Dane growled, sitting up. Anger boiled over. “This isn’t working. You’re making it worse. I shouldn’t have come.”

Ezra threw up his hands. “Fine. But remember, I can still talk. We try again soon.”

Dane stood slowly, body aching, pride in ruins. “Trusting you was a mistake. Stay out of my business, Kane.”

He grabbed his things and stormed out, branches snapping underfoot. The walk back felt endless. His muscles screamed, but his mind churned louder. Had he handed his rival the perfect weapon to destroy him? Or was there a slim chance this could actually help?

Either way, sleep would not come easy tonight.

Night fell on the same sheltered place and the long walking finally came to rest.Dane and Ezra remained where they had spent the day. They did not pack the blanket. They did not rise to search for farther ground. The open land lay quiet around them as the last light left the grass and the first stars took their places in the sky.Ezra spoke first, his voice low and steady. “The long walking has reached its natural end. I can feel it settling in my body the same way the dark is settling on the land.”Dane nodded in the gathering night. “So can I. There is no more need to keep moving without end. The drive that once pushed us has gone quiet.”“We chose this life. The freedom. The open ground. Each other. That choice still sits true between us.”“We did choose it. And it was enough. It is still enough. Nothing more is required.”They sat close under the blanket while more stars appeared. The sheltered place held a little of the day’s warmth. The wind had eased until it was almost nothin

The day settled around us in one sheltered place and the walking slowed almost to nothing. I woke to the soft light and felt no urge to rise and pack. Ezra lay still beside me. We stayed under the blanket longer than we had in many days. The sheltered hollow held the quiet like a cupped hand. Ezra spoke first. “We are not moving today. Not far, anyway.” “No. The walking has slowed almost to nothing. It feels right.” “After all the days and nights outside, I keep asking what we have become.” “I ask the same question. The answer sits quiet and clear now.” We rose slowly. Spread the blanket again in the same sheltered place. Sat close. The long grass stood around us like low walls that did not close us in. The sky stayed open above. Ezra looked at his hands. “What we have become is simpler than I expected. Less driven. More settled inside the freedom.” “We have become people who no longer need the constant motion to prove we are free.” “Yes. The open land did that work o

Morning came soft on the gentle rolling stretch and something inside me had already begun to settle.I woke before Ezra. The long grass held the last of the night’s cold. I lay still and felt the change before I could name it. The drive that had pushed us for so many days sat quieter than before. Not gone. Just resting.Ezra stirred beside me. We rose without hurry. Packed the blanket the same way we always had. Then we started walking. The distance we covered felt shorter than usual. Neither of us spoke about it at first. Our steps simply slowed on their own. After a while Ezra said, “The long wandering is coming to rest inside me. I can feel it settling like dust after a long wind.”I kept my eyes on the soft rise ahead. “I feel it too. The need to keep moving without end has loosened its grip.”“Not gone completely. Just quieter.”“Quieter is enough for today.”We walked on through the gentle rolling land. The grass brushed our legs in long soft strokes. The sky stayed pale and ope

Late light found us on a gentle rolling stretch where the grass grew long and soft and the wind finally eased its long push.I slowed my steps. Ezra slowed beside me. Our boots sank a little into the thicker grass. The sky held the last quiet color of day like it was reluctant to leave. We spread the blanket across the ground and sat close, shoulders touching, the open ground falling away in soft waves on every side.Ezra spoke low, almost part of the soft wind. “There is a quiet joy in this life that needs no arrival and no return. I feel it sitting deep in my chest.”I looked out across the long grass and nodded. “I feel it too. The joy does not ask for anything more than what is already here. It does not need a place to finish.”“I can no longer picture any ending that would feel right. Every time I try, the picture breaks apart before it can form.”“The only rightness left is the next step and the night that follows it. That is all the rightness I need now.”We sat while the light

Morning came cold and bright on the wide open plain and the light felt like it belonged only to the two of us.I woke with Ezra’s arm across my chest. We stayed still under the blanket for a long time, sharing a quiet closeness that needed no words. His breath warmed my neck. I turned and kissed his shoulder. He made a soft sound and pulled me nearer before we finally rose.Ezra sat up and looked out across the endless grass. “The open land has rewritten the meaning of home inside me completely.”I nodded while I shook the frost from the blanket. “I feel it too. Home is no longer a place we left. It is the ground under every step we take.”“The body now resists even the memory of walls. When I try to picture them my chest tightens.”“Those memories have no place left to live. The body already knows they do not belong here.”We packed the blanket and started walking once more across the wide plain. The air was sharp and clean. The steady wind pushed against us without anger. The horizo

Late light found us on a wide open plain where the wind moved without obstacle and the sky felt larger than any sky we had known.I slowed my steps. Ezra slowed beside me. Our boots stopped in the open grass. Nothing stood between us and the far edge of the world. The light was soft and low, spreading gold across the endless stretch of land. We spread the blanket across the ground and sat close, shoulders touching, the wide plain falling away on every side.Ezra spoke soft, almost part of the wind. “This life of walking has become the only life I want to keep. I know that now without any doubt left in me.”I looked across the open land and felt the truth of his words settle in my chest. “I know it too. Everything else has fallen away cleanly. Only this remains. Only the walking and you and the ground.”“I can no longer imagine choosing walls again. The thought itself feels strange now, like it belongs to someone else.”“The open land has already claimed us in a way no house ever could
