Chapter 4

Autor: South Twig
The next evening, I prepared a whole range of dishes for dinner.

Gunther paused as he came through the door. "Why did you suddenly cook?"

"I wanted to have dinner with you," I said.

He looked at me, then pulled out a chair and sat down, something he rarely did. I served him a bowl of tomato beef stew. He took a spoonful, and his brow relaxed a little.

I studied his face, then suddenly asked, "Gunther, if someone calls you tonight, can you not go?"

He paused with his spoon still in his hand, his expression hard to read. "I'm not going anywhere tonight."

Something in my chest loosened a little.

Then, his phone rang, and Chloe's name appeared on the screen. He glanced at it but did not answer. It rang a second time, then a third.

Finally, he picked up and asked, "What is it?"

A sobbing voice came through the phone. Within ten seconds, Gunther's expression went from calm to tense. "Stay where you are. I'll be right there."

His chair screeched across the floor. "She's having an allergic reaction. She can't get a cab."

I stared at him. "You just promised me."

His hand with the coat stopped, then impatience flashed in his eyes. "She's alone and in danger. You're safe at home. It's different."

"Gunther!" I almost cried out.

"Nicole, stop being unreasonable," Gunther said as the door closed.

The stew on the table was still steaming. I stayed in my chair without moving.

An hour later, he sent a message: [I'm at the emergency room. I'll be back soon.]

Another hour passed.

Another message came: [The doctor wants to keep her under observation. I'll stay with her a little longer.]

At one in the morning, another message arrived: [It's getting late. I'll just get a room nearby. I'll be back tomorrow.]

I stared at that last message, then put my phone facedown on the table. I stood up, walked into the bedroom, and opened the closet. My clothes occupied only the left third.

Two cardigans that were not mine hung on the right. The last time Chloe had said she was cold, Gunther had told her to take them from our home.

A strawberry lip balm sat beside my toothbrush on the bathroom counter.

On the second shelf of the bookcase, my books had been pushed into the far corner. In their place sat a pink planner and a stack of polaroid photos.

I looked through them one by one. Every photo had been taken by Chloe in this house.

The living room, the kitchen, the balcony, the bedroom's bay window. The earliest photo was dated the day after I left on my last business trip. I put them back where I had found them.

I felt no anger. There was only the peace of knowing a decision had been made. I went to the vanity and took off the wedding ring I had worn for three years.

I laid it on the polaroid photos with the divorce agreement I had signed some time ago. Then I took a piece of paper and wrote:

[Gunther, I've stepped outside your boundaries, just as you wanted. I've signed the agreement. I hope you find your freedom.]

I pulled out my suitcase and looked back one last time.

The warm yellow light, a spacious living room, the elegant furniture.

After three years, nothing here held any of the warmth I had brought to it. I closed the door and pushed the key back through the gap beneath it. It struck the floor with a clear echo.

We owed each other nothing.

A cab was waiting downstairs.

"Eastport International Airport, please," I said to the driver as I changed my booking to the earliest flight.

Four hours later, the plane was washed in the first light of dawn as it accelerated and lifted off, climbing into the clouds.

I looked at the faint mark my ring had left around my finger. I had never felt so calm. The boundary that had stood in my way for three years finally dissolved in the wind.

I was free.

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 11

Three months later, I returned to Oceanton to settle the last of the settlements. Gunther arranged to meet me at a quiet cafe. That day, he wore a clean white shirt, and his hair was cut short. He looked much fresher, though a lingering weariness remained around his eyes. He pushed a folder toward me. "This is the loan for the thirty thousand dollars your father needed. No need to pay it back anymore." He paused, then added, "I've also bought Mountains in Fall in my own name from the company and donated it to the city art museum. The donor's name...is yours." I opened the folder and glanced inside. I nodded before accepting it. "Thank you." He looked at me in silence for so long that I thought he would not speak again. "I've figured out a lot these past years." His voice was dry when he finally spoke. "You installed the motion sensor lights at home because I kept bumping into table corners when I got up at night. You kept gastric medicine in the study and wrote reminder

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 10

Three years later, I was at the Oceanton Fashion Week. As an emerging designer of Kentran descent, I presented my graduation collection, "Boundary," in the closing show. When the last model finished walking the runway, the lights went dark, leaving a single spotlight on the runway entrance. I slowly walked out in a pure white asymmetric gown I had designed myself. My design statement appeared on the large screen behind me. [This collection is dedicated to every woman who has been hurt in love and finally chosen to let the other person keep their boundaries while she keeps her freedom.] As the statement ended, thunderous applause filled the room. I stood in the center of the runway, smiling as I bowed to the audience. My gaze swept across the seats, and I paused briefly. Gunther sat in the middle of the front row. He had lost a lot of weight. His once sharp features had softened, and he stared straight at me with red eyes. In his hands was a large bouquet of white roses in f

Gunther returned home alone. He shut himself in the study for three days and nights, seeing no one. On the fourth day, he stumbled over to the desk and opened the drawer he had once forbidden me to touch as though remembering something. At the very back lay an old iron box covered in dust. He opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a thick stack of diaries. He opened one of the diaries to the first page. [September 15, 20XX. Sunny. I saw the senior Gunther in the library again today. He seemed to glow as he sat reading by the window. I didn't dare go up to him. I could only watch him in secret.] [June 22, 20XX. Rainy. Gunther graduated. I watched him from the crowd. He shone so brightly, and I felt so small. Congratulations on graduating, Gunther.] [March 8, 20XX. Cloudy. I heard our family is arranging a marriage with the Lane family. I couldn't sleep all night. Will they choose me? Will it be me?] He read page after page, year after year. There was that distant a

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 8

Nicole's POVThe sky over Lumiville was always so blue. I had just finished a full day of classes, carrying a bolt of traditionally dyed satin I had just bought. I left the academy to look for inspiration by the Sein River when suddenly, a black Bentley stopped in front of me. The door opened and a familiar figure rushed out, though he somehow seemed like a stranger. It was Gunther. He was a complete disaster. His expensive suit was wrinkled, as though he had not changed it in days. Dark stubble covered his jaw, and his bloodshot eyes were fixed on me. He practically ran over, opening his arms and wanting to pull me into an embrace. Instinctively, I turned aside and stepped back, holding my fabric and avoiding his touch. His arms froze in midair, and so did the urgent, elated look on his face. "Nicole..." His voice was raw, with a fragile note of disbelief. "Come back with me." I looked at him quietly and said nothing. He stepped forward, his voice urgent and pleadin

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 7

Nicole's POVMy life in Lumiville was busy and fulfilling. The academy's schedule was packed. Every day, I soaked up everything I could learn about design, fabrics, and tailoring. By day, I went back and forth between fabric markets full of beautiful materials and pattern rooms, my hands stained with paint and chalk dust. At night, I returned to my small rented apartment and sketched designs as I watched the twinkling stars outside my window, working until morning. I had not thought about Gunther in a long time. Occasionally, his face would flicker through my dreams, blurred as if I was seeing him through a layer of mist. One day, I had just left the studio when Nate from back home called. "Nicole, how have you been? Are you settling into Lumiville?" "I'm doing well, Nate. Thanks for asking," I said. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking hesitantly. "Well... Mr. Lane contacted me a few days ago. He asked for your contact information." My hand tightened around t

Mrs. Watson hesitated, as if she had more to say. "She has gone out to take care of something," Gunther cut her off coldly and bit into a slice of toast. It tasted like cardboard. He picked up his phone, opened Messenger, and found his conversation with Nicole. He typed: [Where are you?] Then he gave it another thought. Reaching out first would make him seem too eager, as if he cared. Gunther deleted the message, put his phone down with a blank expression, and drove to the office. He was feeling off all day at work. During a meeting with senior management that morning, he paused halfway through speaking. Out of habit, he waited for someone to bring him a cup of coffee served at precisely the right temperature. However, the conference room door stayed closed. He waited a few seconds. No one came in. The room was silent, and every member of management looked at him in confusion. He frowned, cleared his throat, and continued, but his thoughts were a mess. Just then,
