Chapter 3

Autor: South Twig
The banquet hall was brightly lit.

Kate came over and looked critically at my empty hands. "What did you get Gunther this year?"

I thought of the custom tie I had cut apart the night before and silently took out the limited edition watch I had personally commissioned in Alpsland.

She glanced at the box and frowned deeply.

"Another watch? Can't you put some thought into it? All you do is buy things off the shelf. You have no idea of what is expected of you as my son's wife!"

She pushed the gift box aside and waved dismissively.

"Put it over there. Leave room for the food."

Friends and relatives at nearby tables turned to look at me, their expressions full of sneer. I gripped the box until my fingertips went white.

The year before, I had designed a pair of black onyx cufflinks and spent six months polishing them by hand, leaving my hands covered in cuts. Kate had tossed them aside in the same way, calling them embarrassing and accusing me of making no effort.

I knew the truth better than anyone.

She did not dislike the gifts; she simply disliked me.

"Mom, this is a good watch." Gunther spoke in his usual cool voice. I had not noticed his approach. "I really appreciate the thought Nicole put into it. Stop picking on her."

I went still, suddenly fighting back tears. In three years, this was the first time he had defended me in front of other people.

Just then, a commotion broke out near the entrance.

Chloe walked gracefully into the hall in an evening dress colored like champagne and stiletto heels. She carried a painting in an ornate frame and said, "Happy birthday, Mr. Lane!"

Smiling brightly, she revealed the painting. It was "Mountains in Fall," an original by the renowned painter Julian. Gunther had spent three years searching for it.

Its market value started at eight figures.

Kate's eyes lit up, and she hurried over. "Oh! Gunther's been looking for this painting for years! Chloe, how did you get it?"

Chloe lowered her head shyly. "Gunther mentioned it once. I happened to know the collector, so I swallowed my pride and begged him for it for years..."

I looked at the painting. Three months earlier, his secretary had mentioned that Gunther had authorized using company funds to approach the collector.

So, the company had paid for the painting. Yet the purchase had gone through Chloe.

The warmth inside of me suddenly vanished as Gunther walked toward her. He took the painting with a rare smile. "That was thoughtful of you."

Kate beamed and deliberately raised her voice. "You're so thoughtful. Much better than some people who've been married for years and still don't know what their husband likes."

"Exactly. Young women pay attention to these things." Several wealthy women glanced my way.

Chloe moved closer, touched my arm, and lowered her voice. "Nicole, please don't take this the wrong way. Gunther and I really are just..."

Before she finished, her wineglass suddenly tilted. The entire glass of red wine spilled onto my dress.

"Oh! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Chloe shrieked and stepped back.

Then, her ankle twisted, and she fell backward. Gunther lunged forward and caught her around the waist.

"Are you okay?" His voice was tense as he bent to examine her ankle.

Meanwhile, I stood there with my skirt soaked in red wine. He did not look at me once.

"Gunther," I called his name.

He did not even look up as he said, "Chloe hurt her ankle. Behave."

Chloe leaned against his chest, her eyes turning red as she spoke softly. "It's my fault for being so careless. I'll pay for Nicole's dress..."

Gunther frowned and finally turned to me. He was not concerned about me. "Nicole, do you need to put on that face in front of everyone?"

I looked down at his hands that were carefully supporting Chloe's ankle, and smiled. "You're right. My apologies. I'll leave you all to it."

No one asked me to stay. Kate even sighed with relief.

I walked down the corridor and pushed open the banquet hall's side door.

I glanced back at the warm yellow light spilling from the hall. Inside, laughter and clinking glasses mingled with Chloe's bright, clear voice.

I turned and walked into the night, never looking back again.

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 11

Three months later, I returned to Oceanton to settle the last of the settlements. Gunther arranged to meet me at a quiet cafe. That day, he wore a clean white shirt, and his hair was cut short. He looked much fresher, though a lingering weariness remained around his eyes. He pushed a folder toward me. "This is the loan for the thirty thousand dollars your father needed. No need to pay it back anymore." He paused, then added, "I've also bought Mountains in Fall in my own name from the company and donated it to the city art museum. The donor's name...is yours." I opened the folder and glanced inside. I nodded before accepting it. "Thank you." He looked at me in silence for so long that I thought he would not speak again. "I've figured out a lot these past years." His voice was dry when he finally spoke. "You installed the motion sensor lights at home because I kept bumping into table corners when I got up at night. You kept gastric medicine in the study and wrote reminder

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 10

Three years later, I was at the Oceanton Fashion Week. As an emerging designer of Kentran descent, I presented my graduation collection, "Boundary," in the closing show. When the last model finished walking the runway, the lights went dark, leaving a single spotlight on the runway entrance. I slowly walked out in a pure white asymmetric gown I had designed myself. My design statement appeared on the large screen behind me. [This collection is dedicated to every woman who has been hurt in love and finally chosen to let the other person keep their boundaries while she keeps her freedom.] As the statement ended, thunderous applause filled the room. I stood in the center of the runway, smiling as I bowed to the audience. My gaze swept across the seats, and I paused briefly. Gunther sat in the middle of the front row. He had lost a lot of weight. His once sharp features had softened, and he stared straight at me with red eyes. In his hands was a large bouquet of white roses in f

Gunther returned home alone. He shut himself in the study for three days and nights, seeing no one. On the fourth day, he stumbled over to the desk and opened the drawer he had once forbidden me to touch as though remembering something. At the very back lay an old iron box covered in dust. He opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a thick stack of diaries. He opened one of the diaries to the first page. [September 15, 20XX. Sunny. I saw the senior Gunther in the library again today. He seemed to glow as he sat reading by the window. I didn't dare go up to him. I could only watch him in secret.] [June 22, 20XX. Rainy. Gunther graduated. I watched him from the crowd. He shone so brightly, and I felt so small. Congratulations on graduating, Gunther.] [March 8, 20XX. Cloudy. I heard our family is arranging a marriage with the Lane family. I couldn't sleep all night. Will they choose me? Will it be me?] He read page after page, year after year. There was that distant a

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 8

Nicole's POVThe sky over Lumiville was always so blue. I had just finished a full day of classes, carrying a bolt of traditionally dyed satin I had just bought. I left the academy to look for inspiration by the Sein River when suddenly, a black Bentley stopped in front of me. The door opened and a familiar figure rushed out, though he somehow seemed like a stranger. It was Gunther. He was a complete disaster. His expensive suit was wrinkled, as though he had not changed it in days. Dark stubble covered his jaw, and his bloodshot eyes were fixed on me. He practically ran over, opening his arms and wanting to pull me into an embrace. Instinctively, I turned aside and stepped back, holding my fabric and avoiding his touch. His arms froze in midair, and so did the urgent, elated look on his face. "Nicole..." His voice was raw, with a fragile note of disbelief. "Come back with me." I looked at him quietly and said nothing. He stepped forward, his voice urgent and pleadin

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 7

Nicole's POVMy life in Lumiville was busy and fulfilling. The academy's schedule was packed. Every day, I soaked up everything I could learn about design, fabrics, and tailoring. By day, I went back and forth between fabric markets full of beautiful materials and pattern rooms, my hands stained with paint and chalk dust. At night, I returned to my small rented apartment and sketched designs as I watched the twinkling stars outside my window, working until morning. I had not thought about Gunther in a long time. Occasionally, his face would flicker through my dreams, blurred as if I was seeing him through a layer of mist. One day, I had just left the studio when Nate from back home called. "Nicole, how have you been? Are you settling into Lumiville?" "I'm doing well, Nate. Thanks for asking," I said. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking hesitantly. "Well... Mr. Lane contacted me a few days ago. He asked for your contact information." My hand tightened around t

Mrs. Watson hesitated, as if she had more to say. "She has gone out to take care of something," Gunther cut her off coldly and bit into a slice of toast. It tasted like cardboard. He picked up his phone, opened Messenger, and found his conversation with Nicole. He typed: [Where are you?] Then he gave it another thought. Reaching out first would make him seem too eager, as if he cared. Gunther deleted the message, put his phone down with a blank expression, and drove to the office. He was feeling off all day at work. During a meeting with senior management that morning, he paused halfway through speaking. Out of habit, he waited for someone to bring him a cup of coffee served at precisely the right temperature. However, the conference room door stayed closed. He waited a few seconds. No one came in. The room was silent, and every member of management looked at him in confusion. He frowned, cleared his throat, and continued, but his thoughts were a mess. Just then,
