Jules hurried into the elevator and down to the lobby, her legs working faster than her brain as she fought to catch up with Nolan.

‘You have nothing to explain to him, Jules. You didn't pass the judgement. You have no hand in this,’ the voice in her head whispered, but she gave it no audience as she pushed open the front door of the building.

There was no sign of him out front, so that left only one place—the parking lot.

She rushed down there, smoothening her silk blouse and office pants.

He wasn't hard to spot, as he stood a few feet away from his car, his phone in his ear as he spoke smoothly, his back to her.

Jules reduced the haste in her steps, only just realizing she had nothing in mind to say to him.

“Nolan." She called softly, moving closer.

Nolan turned around, the sight of her bringing a frown to his face.

"I'll call you back.” He ended the call and slid the phone into his pocket. "I don't have much time. What do you want?”

Jules ignored the edge in his voice and stepped

Nolan clutched the basket's handle tighter, like that was the source of his problem. This was the second time since he moved here that he was walking within hospital walls—for the same person.Only this one was worse, and he was pissed. He kept replaying the scene he was shown on the house cameras. And though it was clear Jules hadn't even as little as touched her, he just couldn't shake the feeling that wanted it to be Jules. And he just didn't know why.His heart ached each time the image of Evie's unconscious body on the floor flashed in his mind. There was this feeling of guilt—no, not guilt. Something deeper, with a mix of hate brewing in his chest that he was starting to embrace. He never should have agreed to that stupid dinner, which he still didn’t understand the point of. But of course, he was just trying to be supportive—trying to look “happier” about the wedding. But see where it had gotten him.Now he was walking down the hall to meet her for the first time since she was

“I’m glad I didn’t insist on going with them,” Colton said, leaning against the counter, a cup of steaming hot coffee in his hand.“I don't think they'd have let you come even if you insisted.” Cassie said and chuckled lightly, the sound of spoons and plates drowning it a little.Colton only smiled. “I would have been there if I wanted to." He paused. “I hope her baby's okay though”"Jules told me she tried to grab her. On heels.” Cassie spun around, the washing sponge in her hand, her bum short and tank top clinging to her body."Who told pregnant women they could wear heels?" “She wasn't that pregnant." Cassie shot him a look."You know what I mean.” He said with a smile.Cassie just turned back to her washing, letting a brief pause settle. "Was she always like that? Arrogant and annoying?” Colton blew on his coffee and took a sip. “Evie is a sweet girl, really. She's just a little too proud and selfish." “How was it? I mean, you both dated for real, right?" Cassie asked, round

In a blink of an eye, Evie was face down on the ground, and Jules didn't realize till about a second later. She frowned and paused in her tracks when she heard the thud. Then she turned. Her heart dropped. There, behind her, was Evie lying face down on the ground. She didn’t make a sound or speak.Jules' breath shook and all the reflexes in her body seemed to turn off as she just stood there, staring. Then Evie moved—just a little. More like a flinch.Jules took a step forward too. “Evie?" She whispered."Evie?” Nolan called from the dining room.Evie suddenly moved, letting out a moan, before raising her eyes to look at Jules. There was a frown on her face, the one that spelled out pain. She tried to push herself off the ground—but the second she did, a sharp pain ripped through her body.“Fuck!" she muttered.“Don’t move,” Jules said, trying to be useful through her astonishment as she stepped closer. Then she saw it.‘No.’ She screamed, startling even Evie.Feet hurried from every

“What is it, George? You don't get to call me whenever you wish. I thought I made that clear,” Ethan said into the phone, standing by a window beside the door. A slight frown settled on his face as he listened to George apologize and ramble. “I told you to let it be for now. It’s not needed yet. When I need you to pick the case back up, you will. Let Jules win for now, am I clear?” “You seem pissed." Maggie said, appearing from behind, arms folded, a smirk on her lips as her eyes roamed his back view. Ethan almost rolled his eyes. “Goodbye, George." He hung up and turned around, the most genuine smile spreading across his face. “Maggie! What's up?" “Oh, nothing.” She took a step forward, her smile staying. “Just remembered you never honoured my invitation.” Ethan just watched her and smiled. He'd always known Maggie had her eye on him. He just didn't know she was this desperate and shameless about it. “I didn’t get a house address,” Ethan replied gently, folding his arms acros

There were a total of eight people at the table—Jules and Ethan, Nolan and Evie, Kai, the two gossiping girls, and a middle-aged female who looked like Maggie's age mate. Maggie's friend, maybe. All the other guests were strangers to Jules—and probably to themselves. But what Jules knew for sure was they knew her, because they all had TVs in their houses. Nolan's announcement had brought a frown on all their faces, but none of them were as irritated and annoyed as the two girls, and of course Evie. “Nolan, you know I always use my phone." She argued calmly, still frowning. Nolan's voice was still calm. “Yes, I know. But please just for a few hours, Evie. You can live through that." Evie stared at him for a while, her lips twisted grudgingly as she looked at Nolan's palm, which he had stretched out. Then finally, after what seemed like a long time, she handed it over, and everyone took a breath. Evie's smile returned brighter than before, and she tucked her hair behind

The call pulled to a halt just in front of the large building, and Jules couldn't deny she was impressed. The compound had enough space to host a party, and it carried a quiet, beautiful serenity.Ethan got out of his side of the backseat and circled to her side, opening the door for her.A gush of wind blew her way as she stepped out, declining Ethan’s hand and pulling her coat tighter around her body.“I really don't want to tell you, Jules. Please don't make me." She remembered his words last night when she'd asked him what Nolan had done to him.So once again, she’d slept on the same bed with someone she knew nothing about—someone she just discovered had a criminal tag to his name. She just walked towards the entrance of the building, leaving him with the guard who handled the gifts she'd hurriedly picked out on their way, to wish them conjugal bliss and a safe delivery. She wasn't mad at Ethan though, she was just disappointed. But why wasn't she angry??Gently, she pushed the d
