The Jacket

Author: Emma L
Ava’s Perspective

Luck was not on my side. Bill was already home.

My feet hadn’t even crossed the door before the shouting started.

And of course, Alexander’s suit jacket, the one I was planning to hide, had already been found by Bill and was lying on the floor, stomped on like trash. Bill’s face twisted in anger as he pointed at me.

“You bitch! Bringing men home like this—do you think I’m dead?”

My chest tightened. The room went quiet except for the sound of my heartbeat hammering in my ears. He hit the nail right on the head, and it made my stomach drop.

Because the truth was, accidental or not, Alexander had been here, and I had let him in. And the things that happened between us weren’t innocent at all. Thinking about it now made me feel sick with guilt, and I just stood there stamped, not even knowing how to open my mouth to explain myself in a way that wouldn’t make me sound even more suspicious.

Julian, who had just been standing there like a bystander, suddenly decided to jump in. She slid closer to Bill, tugging at his arm like she was the one who could calm him down, and in that fake soft voice of hers said, “Bill, don’t be upset. Who knows, maybe that coat in Ava’s room was just left behind by some guest.”

Her tone was light, but her eyes cut to me like she knew more than she should—or maybe she just enjoyed that I couldn’t say a damn thing to defend myself right now.

Then she turned all the way toward me, laying it on thick with that fake sweetness. “I should also apologize, Sister-in-law. Please don’t blame me for calling Bill away last night. I wasn’t feeling well—I had a stomachache. I didn’t mean to disturb you two.”

Yeah right. Didn’t mean to disturb us, just meant to steal the groom for yourself.

I forced a smile, keeping my voice steady even though my chest felt tight. “It’s fine. You two are such a close brother and sister—how could I possibly blame you?”

The words burned coming out, but I said them anyway. Better to swallow it than hand her more ammo.

“I know it’s not easy for you, Sister-in-law, but you really shouldn’t blame Bill. He just worries about me so much, and I didn’t have anyone else to call except him that time. You understand, right?”

What bullshit was she even talking about? When did I ever blame Bill?

Before I could respond, Bill’s voice exploded. “Why are you even explaining yourself to her? Taking care of my sister is my duty—I don’t need you, bitch, telling me what to do!”

The sudden shout made me flinch. He snatched the coat off the floor and hurled it straight at me.

The heavy fabric hit my shoulder before sliding down, the familiar scent wrapping around me instantly. My stomach twisted. Every delusion I had of it maybe being the wrong jacket vanished in the air.

“You’re going to give me an explanation today!” Bill roared.

The jacket stank of Alexander, sharp and male, mixed with the perfume I had sprayed on myself last night. And worse—God, worse—it carried that smell, the one that couldn’t be mistaken for anything else. Sex.

My stomach twisted. Could Bill smell it too? Could he tell?

I forced myself to glance at him and almost choked on air. His expression had changed. The rage that had just been burning in his face slipped, and now there was something else—confusion, suspicion. His eyes narrowed at the jacket like it was holding secrets only he could see. His hand froze mid-motion.

Panic shot through me.

Without thinking, I gripped the coat tighter, my knuckles going white.

Why was he staring at it like that? Did he see something? A smudge? A mark? God forbid, a stain?

He doesn’t recognize the jacket… does he?

My throat went dry. A thousand excuses tried to form in my head but died before I could piece them together.

God. I’m finished. I’m doomed.

  • Crossing Lines with My Ex’s Mafia Brother in Law   Bill Slipped His Hand Inside Julian's Clothes

Ava's PerspectiveWhen I made my way down to the ground floor, the first thing I noticed was Eddy’s teasing grin. It made my stomach tighten with embarrassment, and I couldn't help but explain myself. "I've bandaged it up, so I'll be heading out now," I said, lifting my arm to show him the dressing.Eddy nodded, still wearing that grin. “Thanks for handling the girl,” he said, his voice warm but with a curious edge. “How’d you know she was lying?”His question made me feel a little better, giving me an excuse to focus on something else. I shrugged casually, though I didn’t feel quite as calm as I tried to seem. “Her first reaction when she came in wasn’t to look for somewhere to hide—it was to observe me. Even when someone knocked on the door a few minutes later, she didn’t flinch. No sign of fear at all. That’s when I knew everything she’d said was a lie.”Eddy raised his eyebrows, clearly impressed. “That’s sharp. You’ve got good instincts, Ava.”I gave him a small smile in acknowled

  • Crossing Lines with My Ex’s Mafia Brother in Law   This Isn't Quite Right

Ava's PerspectiveBut whichever request I made would expose my current identity as an imposter.Alexander wasn’t just any man. He was unpredictable, dangerous, and worst of all—powerful. He’d said he’d help me, but even the Godfather couldn’t control him. So what made me think I could? That I could lean on him and not pay the price later?A gift that couldn’t be repaid was just a noose tied with a pretty ribbon.I stared at him, still lounging on the sofa, cigarette balanced between two fingers, looking at me like he had all the time in the world. His generosity should’ve felt comforting, thrilling even. And for a moment, it did. But the longer I looked, the more I realized: this wasn’t safety. This was temptation. And I couldn't afford to fall for it.After a long silence, I finally said it."Our relationship can't continue any longer."The words dropped between us like a stone in still water.I didn’t dare look at him immediately. My hands clenched in my lap.He didn’t move. Didn’t s

  • Crossing Lines with My Ex’s Mafia Brother in Law   The Truth Behind the Mafia’s Persecution of Ava’s Family

Eddy’s PerspectiveThe elevator hummed as it climbed. I kept my eyes on the floor numbers, reporting what I knew. “We’ve got a man stationed on the top floor. He can handle the girl.”Alexander didn’t respond. He just stood there, cigarette in hand, calm as a storm that hadn’t decided when to break. Then, without looking at me, he said, “Ava’s still upstairs.”The words hit harder than they should have. My throat tightened. I hadn’t thought about her in the equation. If that girl was armed or desperate, she could’ve been holding Ava hostage by now.I glanced at him. “You think the girl’s got her?”He exhaled smoke, eyes fixed on the glowing floor display. “If she does, it won’t matter.”That was it. No edge in his tone, no urgency—just cold certainty. Like he was talking about furniture, not a person.Something about that unsettled me. I’d always figured Ava mattered to him in some twisted way—he’d never said it, but the way he looked at her sometimes made it obvious. Now, though, I wa

  • Crossing Lines with My Ex’s Mafia Brother in Law   I Don't Want to Be a Prostitute

Alexander's PerspectiveThe room was a goddamn mess.Broken glass crunched under my boots. Furniture overturned. Blood smeared across the marble like some deranged artist got creative. My men stood frozen, faces pale, eyes avoiding mine."How many?" I asked, voice cold.Silence. Then Eddy stepped forward. "Four. Two stabbed. Two strangled."I let the numbers sit for a beat. Four men. Dead. In my building. On my watch.I turned slowly. "All this," I said, gesturing at the wreckage, "for one woman?"Eddy swallowed hard. "She was trained. Military or something like it. Moved fast. Precise."I stared at him. "If she was that good, she'd be long gone by now. But she’s not. You know why?"No answer.I stepped in closer. "Because she’s not running. She’s hiding."Something shifted in Eddy’s posture. I watched it click in his head.I narrowed my eyes. "If she wanted out, she wouldn’t be dragging this out. She’s circling. Waiting. She’s after something—or someone."Eddy grabbed his walkie-talki

Ava's PerspectiveHis eyes pinned me in place. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. He crossed the distance slowly, each step a deliberate invasion. When he finally stopped in front of me, the air between us felt thin. His hand rose, rough knuckles grazing my jaw as he tilted my face upward. The pad of his thumb brushed the corner of my mouth.“You look like you’re about to cry again,” he murmured, voice low, a thread of amusement curling through the words. “Did my baby miss me that much?”I could only nod. The faintest smile touched his lips before he whispered, “Say it.”“I… missed you.” The confession trembled out of me.“Good girl.”The praise came soft but final, striking deeper than any command. My knees weakened. He drew me into his arms, the movement so effortless it felt inevitable. My cheek pressed to his chest; the steady thud beneath my ear grounded me even as the scent of him—smoke, gun oil, and something darker—pulled me apart. His shirt was thin, the warmth of his body

  • Crossing Lines with My Ex’s Mafia Brother in Law   The Deal with the Devil

Ava's PerspectiveI firmly believe Father wouldn't have taken his own life without reason. And even though I hated how Jasper had shut me down, told me to stop asking, I couldn’t ignore the truth sitting just beneath the surface.I remembered how the mafia and the Quinn family had backed us into a corner—tightened the noose until we had no options left. Maybe Jasper was protecting me. Maybe the truth was worse than I imagined.Either way, I understood it now: to save my brother from that same fate, I had to trade my own future. My freedom for his. That was the only deal left on the table.I never imagined this would be my life. I used to be a pampered little princess—naive, soft, stupid. Now, I was someone else entirely. I had to be. The kind of girl who measured risks, made trades, calculated gains like a player at a poker table. After everything with Jasper, I didn’t want to go back to Bill’s place and ruin what was left of my mood. I sat in the car for a while, just staring. Then I
