Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
Garrett didn’t come home that night.

The messages I sent disappeared into silence, and after a while, I stopped trying.

Early the next morning, I went to the hospital to see my sister.

A bone marrow match had finally been found, and her surgery was scheduled for two days later.

She’d had leukemia since she was a child. Our parents walked out on us years ago, and all this time, she had been my last remaining family.

She lay in her hospital bed, surrounded by softly beeping machines.

The moment she saw me, her eyes lit up.

“Jade!”

Then she noticed the bandage wrapped around my forehead and froze.

“What happened to your head? Were you hurt?”

I set the fruit I’d brought on the side table and answered lightly, “It’s nothing. I took a bad fall, that’s all.”

She nodded, still a little uncertain, but her excitement quickly took over.

“Jade, the doctor said I can have surgery in two days. Does that mean I’m finally getting better?

“After I recover, will you take me to the capital? Please?”

I rubbed her hair gently, a dull ache rising in my chest.

She was seventeen this year.

She had spent more than seven years in a hospital bed.

Never mind the capital—she'd almost forgotten what this city even looked like.

If her surgery succeeded, I would take her anywhere she wanted to go.

“Garrett hasn’t come to see me in a while. Has he been really busy lately?

“I already finished that book he bought me last time.”

She clung to my arm and kept talking, one thought tumbling into the next.

She really liked Garrett.

She had always hoped I would marry him someday.

Watching her smile, my thoughts drifted far away.

If not for Sienna, Garrett and I probably would have been happy.

Back when we first got together, he treated my sister like she was his own.

Whenever he bought something good, he always thought of her too.

Her medical bills now, the private room, even finding the bone marrow match—

Garrett had helped make all of it happen.

I was grateful for that. Grateful enough to promise myself that if I ever got married, it would only be to him.

But little by little, he changed.

He started bringing Sienna everywhere, and what had once been a life for two became a life for three.

Garrett always told me, “Sienna’s autistic. You can’t hold it against someone who’s sick.”

Because of my sister, I kept yielding.

Again and again, I lowered the line I swore I’d never cross.

And all I got in return was humiliation that only got worse.

I used to think everything would be fine once Garrett and I made it official.

But every time we were on our way to sign the papers, Sienna would have an episode and everything would be called off.

After enough times, I stopped having the courage to try.

There were countless moments when I wanted to break up with him.

Garrett had always seemed sure of one thing—that I would never walk away while my sister still needed him.

But after ten years, I had had enough.

I was just about to tell my sister that I was planning to leave Garrett when my phone rang.

It was him.

I paused, then stepped into the hallway to answer.

His voice came fast and sharp.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital.”

“What are you doing at the hospital?!”

Garrett’s voice shot up so suddenly it made my ears ring.

“Sienna’s in trouble. She’s having an episode, and no one can stop her…”

He didn’t need to finish.

I already knew what he wanted.

He wanted me to be the clown again, the punchline, the spectacle—anything to make Sienna smile.

I took a slow breath.

“Jasmine’s surgery is in two days. I don’t have time.”

The second the words left my mouth, his tone turned cold.

“What exactly do you mean by that? Think carefully.”

In ten years, this was the first time I had ever refused him.

I didn’t answer.

I just hung up.

When I returned to the room, my sister was still chatting with her nurse.

The sight of her smiling eased some of the tension locked in my body.

Then, just then, her attending physician asked me to come to the office.

He slid the completed surgical paperwork across the desk.

“Ms. Sterling, there’s something I’m not sure how to tell you.

“The donor family who agreed to the match has changed their mind.”

The smile on my face froze.

My mind went blank.

“How can they just back out now? The surgery is already scheduled.

“My sister’s body can’t hold on much longer. We worked so hard to find a match…”

I couldn’t force out another word.

The doctor looked at me with quiet regret.

“There’s nothing we can do.”

Jade’s POVI saw Garrett Logan again three months later. My sister’s ashes had long since been laid to rest.I never expected him to find me.And I certainly never expected to see him kneeling in front of my sister’s headstone.“Jasmine… I’m sorry. It's all my fault.”Over and over, he bowed his head, begging for her forgiveness.I stood behind him and felt nothing but bitter disbelief.“She’s dead. What’s the point of apologizing now?“Jasmine died in agony because she never got that surgery. I hope you never come here again for the rest of your life. I won’t let you stain her grave with your presence.”I said every word clearly, one by one.The second Garrett heard my voice, he turned around. He got to his feet and walked toward me.“I’m sorry. I… I really didn’t know it would turn out like this. I thought it would be okay.”He tried to explain himself, but even he seemed to realize there was nothing he could say. Both times Jasmine’s surgery had fallen apart because of him. There wa

“We only went to such extremes because Sienna likes you.”The moment Mrs. Yates said that, Garrett let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. From the very beginning, he had only ever seen Sienna as family. They had grown up together.Known each other all their lives. He never imagined that, in the end, that history would become the very thing they used to guilt him into staying.“Mrs. Yates, I’m not coming back after this. I have a girlfriend, and we were supposed to get married soon.”With that, Garrett left the Yates house. On the way out, he thought of Jasmine still lying in the hospital, still waiting for a bone marrow transplant. The last time, he had wanted Jade to give in.So he had bribed the donor to back out. That was why Jasmine had missed her chance. But this time, he wanted to make up for it.The thought hit him hard enough that he immediately started making calls, trying to find another bone marrow match as fast as possible. Then he got in the car and drove straight to the hos

Garrett shot to his feet.Staring at the chat window, he sent several messages in a row, unable to believe what he was seeing. It felt like a stone was pressing down on his chest, making it hard to breathe. He started calling Jade’s friends one after another.“Have you seen Jade?”“What? Jade? I was actually going to ask you. No one’s been able to reach her for days.”When the call ended, Garrett stood there in a daze.He and Jade had been together for ten years. From eighteen to twenty-eight.There had been several times when they were supposed to make it official. But every single time, something involving Sienna got in the way.Even so, Jade had never once brought up breaking up.Garrett refused to believe she would really leave him.So what if he had used the money from her account? Was that really enough to end a relationship over?He couldn’t make sense of it.And he didn’t want to believe it.As if trying to prove himself right, he turned on every light in the apartment. That wa

Third-Person POVWhen Garrett got Jade’s call, he assumed she was calling to apologize. That was how it had always gone before. Every time they fought, she was always the first one to soften, the first one to say sorry. So this time, he thought it would be no different.Instead, the first thing out of Jade’s mouth was a demand. It instantly put him in a bad mood.At that moment, he was still with Sienna, watching fireworks. His good mood was shattered on the spot.“Garrett, was that her? Did she need something?” Sienna asked.Hearing her voice, Garrett shook his head, ended the call, and cut off every line of communication Jade had to him. They had been giving each other the silent treatment for two weeks. Using the money from her card had been his way of forcing her to reach out first. He just hadn’t expected Jade to speak to him like that. After he turned his phone off, the fireworks ended too.But he felt distracted, restless. The joy he’d had a moment ago was completely gone.Sienn

Garrett and I fell into a full-blown cold war.For the next two weeks, I never went home once.I stayed at the hospital instead.Because the surgery had been delayed, my sister’s condition spiraled further and further out of control. She had grown so thin she was almost nothing but skin and bones, her cheekbones hollow and sharp.“Jade… am I going to die?”She lay in the hospital bed, speaking so softly her voice barely seemed to hold together. My sister wasn’t stupid.“The person who was supposed to donate… did they back out?“Maybe we should just stop. I’m so tired.”At her words, my eyes burned red with tears. I choked back a sob and gripped her hand tighter.“Don’t say that. You’re going to be okay. Trust me.”I stayed with her until she fell asleep, then turned and went straight to her attending physician’s office.“Doctor, you said there was someone else who matched. Do you have a way to contact them? My sister can’t wait any longer.”After hearing my plea, the doctor gave me the

I didn’t even know how I made it out of the doctor’s office.I’d finally had hope in my hands, and now it was gone. When I got back to the room, my sister looked up at me.“Jade, what did the doctor want with you?”I looked at her face, slowly regaining some color.Ever since she found out they’d found a match, there had been hope in her eyes again.Hope that she might actually live.So how was I supposed to tell her the truth?“...The doctor said you’re still a little weak right now, so surgery isn’t a good idea yet.“They pushed it back for a while.”She froze for a second, but still gave me a sweet, obedient smile.I didn’t dare stay long. After saying a few comforting words, I left the hospital. And on the way home, one thought kept pounding through my head:Other than Garrett, no one else could have done this.He was the one who had helped arrange the bone marrow match.Which meant he was also the one with the power to take it away. The moment I got home, I heard crashing.Sienna
