“Five million dollars?” Lauren whispered catching my attention as she sat beside me. Her hands her hands curled into fists in her lap. She was trying to appear calm, but I knew better. Was it because of her ex-husband? I had seen what that bastard had done to her. How he had taken everything she had built and left her with nothing. Now, he sat across the room with his whore on his arm, acting as if none of it mattered. If he was here on behalf of the Riccardi family, there was no way I was going to let him leave with the painting. “Five million dollars,” The auctioneer announced. “Ten million,” Sylas said without hesitation, making the crowd gasp. He had doubled the price without hesitation which confirmed my suspicion. He was here for the Riccardi family. My eyes darted to Lauren and for the first time, I noticed how elegant and sexy she looked in the red dress she was wearing. Her silky vibrant red hair was styled in loose waves that cascaded over her shoulder. And that dress. The dress she is wearing was beyond beautiful, with slits by the side exposing her beautiful legs. Focus. “ Eleven million,” I said lazily, keeping my face unreadable as all eyes turned to me, including Lauren’s. The room fell silent, and I could see everyone staring at me, including Sylas, as he studied me. It was obvious he had not been expecting competition from me so I knew he was going to fall into the trap. “Twenty million,” Sylas countered immediately making me look up. His eyes held a silent, daring gaze, making me chuckle. He had no idea who he was messing with. “Forty million,” I said watching as everyone’s breath hitched in the room. I turned to stare at Sylas watching as his confidence faltered for a second. It was brief but I had caught it. Lauren’s sister, Taylor, silently tugged on Sylas’s arm as if warning him to stop, but he shrugged her off. From what Lauren had told me, Sylas was a man with a lot of pride. Bastardó didn’t know when to back down from a losing battle. I opened my mouth, wanting to push even further when I felt Lauren’s hand suddenly touch my leg under the table. My eyes turned to her immediately feeling the effect of her touch as it made my blood alive. “What are you doing?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “Fifty million. What do you say now?” Sylas asked confidently chuckling. A smile formed on my lips as I saw him. How did the Riccardi family get such a useless associate? The auctioneer stared at me, and I silently nodded, expressing my defeat. Sylas beamed as he saw me. His smug expression shone as the auctioneer cleared his throat.“Is that the last bid? Going in 3….2…1. The painting has been sold to Mr. Freeman!” The auctioneer announced.
Lauren got up from her seat immediately leaving as Sylas stood up basking in his victory while others clapped for him. Poor fool. He had no idea that he had fallen into my trap. Watching as he continued to laugh, I picked up my drink about to raise it to my lips when Stefano, my most trusted Captain approached my table.
“Boss, everything is ready.” He said nodding his head.
“And the governor?” I asked.
“He’s awaiting your orders,” Stefano said smirking as I swirled the amber liquid in my glass before taking a slow sip.
My eyes darted to Sylas as he sat down whispering something to Taylor who immediately darted her eyes to me but I pretended not to notice. Lauren’s earlier exit had not gone unnoticed and as much as I wanted to go after her, I forced myself to remain calm. From the corner of my eye, I watched as Taylor got up heading in the same direction as Lauren had gone earlier.
“Good,” I murmured. “Let’s give Mr. Freeman a night to remember.”
Stefano chuckled under his breath and slipped away, vanishing into the crowd like a shadow. Meanwhile, Sylas turned to me with an arrogant smile as he raised to me. I smirked, lifting my glass in return.
“Mr. Enzo, I didn’t think you’d give up without a fight. What? Did you think I wouldn’t call your bluff?” Sylas asked as he walked up to me staring at me with disgust.
I let out a low chuckle, swirling the liquid in my glass before taking a slow sip. “A bluff?” I repeated, tilting my head as if amused by his ignorance. “Oh, Mr. Freeman, you give yourself too much credit.”
“I have done my own research about you. I thought you were powerful but you’re nothing but the CEO of a struggling company. For your own good, you better not mess with me.” Sylas said arrogantly.
“What are you doing, Sylas? Stay away from Enzo,” Lauren said, her voice echoing and catching my attention.
My eyes narrowed as I saw Lauren confront Sylas. This was the first time a woman had stood up for me.
“Stay away from Enzo? What? Are you defending him now that you’re f**king him, you slut? I can’t believe” Sylas spat making me clench my hand into a fist.
“Be careful of what you say, Sylas” I warned, my voice deadly calm.
From the corner of my eye, I watched as Stefano stood up, his hand resting slightly on his gun. As much as I wanted to shoot several bullets through his skull, the governor’s house was not the most ideal place to make a ruckus and reveal my identity as the Mafia boss of the Santoro family. Shaking my head, I signaled Stefano to remain calm.
“Not everyone is as shady and pathetic as you, Sylas,” Lauren said, her voice bold as she held Sylas’s gaze.
The tension in the room became high and all eyes were suddenly on us as the music stopped playing. Suddenly, Taylor sneaked up from behind Lauren shoving her. My eyes widened as I saw Lauren fall forward while Taylor stood on her dress. Pressing the button on the armrest of my wheelchair, I moved quickly wrapping my arm around her and pulling her towards me.
“Aaah!” Lauren gasped as she fell onto my lap.
Lauren clutched my shoulders, her breath warm against my neck as the room around us stood still. I could feel the quick rise and fall of her chest, the way her fingers dug into my suit jacket as she steadied herself. Her eyes met mine and suddenly, all I could think about was one thing.
Her.
ENZO-One month laterI felt like the f**king happiest man in the world. Three weeks after Don Alonzo got shot, he tried to escape and Rafael had tried to chase him. Unfortunately, Don Alonzo ended up falling off a cliff ending his life instead of facing the consequences of his actions. His body was found a few weeks later. The toughest battle had passed and all the old men in the mafia surrended the moment they heard Don Alonzo was dead. Now I had one more important task. “ You shouldn't be here.” Lauren whined as I stood outside her dressing room waiting for her. Today was the most important day of our lives. Our wedding. Yesterday, I skipped the mafia bachelor's party just so I could get up early to have a peek of Lauren in her dress but my plan failed. Her best friend, Samantha was here guarding the door with her life and even refused to move when I threatened her with my gun. “ If you lay one hand on my best friend, I might have to become a widow even before I reach the altar
“How?” Stefano asked as he stared at Enzo in shock. “Don Santoro. Boss, please spare me.” He begged as Enzo walked closer to him with his men. I scoffed at his pretense. There was no fear in him, just the fear of consequences. The kind that came too late.Enzo didn’t slow down. His boots crushed several glass pieces on the floor but he didn't stop. “Spare you?” Enzo’s voice was ice. “You stood beside the man who wants me buried. You aimed a gun at what’s mine.”His grip on my wrist tightened for a second before he let go and stepped forward.Stefano dropped to his knees, hands in the air, shoulders hunched like he thought playing weak would save him now.“I didn’t mean for it to go this far,” he said quickly. “It was just a job. I didn’t know—”“You knew,” Enzo cut him off. “You chose. You chose to betray your brothers, your family. You shot me at the f**king neck so I wouldn't be able to speak again.” Enzo said turning to look at me. “Thankfully, mia gurriera saved me. If it wasn't
LAUREN The entire club was in chaos. Bullets being fired around like the rain and people screaming, running in every direction, tripping over shattered glass and overturned tables. My ears rang from the noise, but I didn’t stop. I ducked behind a booth, heart slamming against my ribs like it wanted to tear through my chest. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I was supposed to meet Rafael. But he wasn’t here. And now everything was falling apart.I pressed a hand to the side of my neck, trying to slow my breathing. My dress clung to my skin with sweat, my heels sticky with someone else’s spilled drink or blood. I didn’t want to look.A body dropped beside me, lifeless. I bit down on a scream and covered my mouth.Don Alonzo. This was his doing. It had to be.I looked around quickly. Men in dark clothes swarmed the place, shouting to each other in Italian, firing at anything that moved. I didn’t recognize any of them. They weren’t Enzo’s.They were hunting.Hunting me.I gritted my teet
DON ALONZO “ Boss, all of them are waiting.” My right-hand man said coming to fetch me. I stared at the door where all of them were gathered. Those old men were desperate and eager. It had not taken me much to get all of them on my side. Promise them with sweet words that the Italian mafia would remain the same. “ I'll be there soon.” I said turning back to my phone call. After a few seconds, I finally ended the conversation with Enzo's doctor and hung up. I fixed my cufflinks, smoothing down the front of my tailored suit as I stared at my reflection in the tall mirror. Age hadn't dulled my edge, it sharpened it. The lines on my face were marks of survival, carved by betrayal and fire.Enzo had always been a foolish boy. Too soft when it mattered. Too proud to bow his head. I had given him everything. My name, my legacy and the fool had dared to turn against me for a woman.A woman who didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as us.I stepped away from the mirror and moved toward th
“What do you mean he made her Giovanni's legal guardian? He can't do that!” Barbara screamed angrily in protest. I refused to give her any reaction as I sat down with my legs crossed. Earlier I had received a message from Enzo's lawyer. He said Enzo had made some arrangements for Aurora. I didn't need his money. My child didn't either. “ Giovanni is my child. There is no way I will let this tramp raise my son.” Barbara said with disgust as she stared at me. “Mind your language.” Lotus warned reaching for her gun already but I stopped her. There was no need to argue with a drug addict. “ Ms. Riccardi, you are not fit to take care of a child given your habits.” Enzo's lawyer said making Barbara clench her hand. “Mr. Santoro has given his permission for Ms. Bianchi to take care of the two children if anything were to happen to him. His properties and assets shall go to his two children equally. That is all.” He said. Barbara lunged to her feet, face flushed with rage. “You think yo
I barged into the door kicking it down as I entered with all my men behind me. The plate of the car that had been watching Club Solara belonged to the Morretti family, allies of the Riccardi family. It didn't take long for me to know that Dante was behind it. “ Don Santoro. Your visit is very disturbing. You came with guns. Are you trying to break the code and attack your own people?” Mr. Morretti asked. I didn’t answer immediately. The silence stretched, filled only with the creak of leather and the low clicks of safeties being switched off. My eyes swept across the room, landing on the man seated across the table. He was grey haired, arrogant, pretending like I hadn’t just caught one of his rats watching Lauren and my daughter. “I don’t ignore threats either. One of your men has been staking out Club Solara. Why?” I asked coldly. His lips twitched, eyes narrowing. “You stormed in here over a parked car?”I stepped closer, voice dropping. “Don’t insult me. You know exactly what I
