ARIA'S POV

The forest blew with me.

I felt it with every breath—as it hit the bush alive and consciously. Twilight intensified around me, enveloping the shady trees that stretched like fingers to the moldy earth. The air brought that sacred silence that wounded his skin and silenced his heart; everything was waiting, even the wind held its breath.

I was in the middle of the forest, pushing my bare feet to the ground as if I could anchor my heartbeat down. Wolves have gathered around me: some in human form, others in their natural state. Their eyes reflected the light of the silver moon as if the stars had landed between us.

But they weren't alone.

They were here: the elders, the guardians of the earth, the spirits, intertwined with roots and rivers, memories and myths. I felt them at the edges of the cleaning, floating in this space between shape and deformation. Some took the form of creatures submerged in shells and starlight, others moved like fog. They weren’t strangers. Somehow,

The shadows moved. What had seemed forest shadow mere moments ago now writhed and twisted into impossible forms—creatures of living nothing that seeped along the periphery of the grove like oil in hatred. They were led by Draven, who cast aside any semblance of humanity. His form towered over his minions, hemmed about by darkness that devoured light, and where he stepped upon consecrated earth, blades of grass turned to ash.Aria planted herself smack in the middle of the line, magic crackling around her like some kind of cosmic warning sign. Luna power—full-on silver, lighting her up against that blood-red moon. On both flanks, her pack lined up, all tough stares and squared shoulders, but come on. She could smell it—fear, sharp as pennies—hiding under their bravado. No amount of training wipes that away when you’re staring down a nightmare."Wards holding!" Elena cried from her position by the eastern anchor stone, though worry furrowed each line of her weathered face. "But they're

The moon bled. Not a metaphor. In reality, it bled, dripping red into the dusk as if the sky had taken a punch it couldn’t shake off.Aria leaned over the edge of the old watchtower, fingers digging into the stone so hard her hands probably looked like bone claws. The moon above? It was wrong. Too big, too raw, spilling red where silver should’ve been. Like some cosmic crime scene, and everybody knew what that meant, wolves especially. Blood moon: you might as well shout “run,” because nothing stays the same after a night like this.Tonight, it wasn’t just about monsters in the woods. The real monster was the thing clawing at Kale’s soul.“It’s starting early,” Elena puffed as she made her way up, every step careful, like she was rationing strength for a fight she knew she’d lose.“Old texts say it shouldn’t kick off till the moon’s at the top.”Aria didn’t blink. “The old texts never had a volunteer.” Her gaze was glued to the bleeding sky. “Kale wants this, and that’s sped it all up

Sleep, at last, came, but was not serene.Aria stood between waking and sleeping, where grove paths were geometry that hurt the eye to behold. The Great Oak towered over her, but its bark had been mended with moving shadows against the grain, and its leaves whispered secrets in tongues more ancient than man. The wind had the taste of copper and smoked age, thick with the weight of future destruction. She was aware that it was a dream, yet knowledge brought no solace. Dreams could be controlled, molded, used to attack one who was naive enough to believe sleeping provided immunity from paranormal attacks."Luna." The voice seemed to be everywhere and nowhere, humming down her spine like the distant rumble of thunder. "How nice, finally, to meet in person."Shadows under the Great Oak grew darker, taking on the form of man, but in it the empty hungers of the antique vacuum. Tall and graceful, nose and eyes and lips that had once been pretty before ambition had consumed that still humane

The war council convened at midnight, the moon a silver crescent over the grove and shadows privy to too many confidences. Aria sat on the great oak table, running her fingers over the grooved grain where the generations of leadership had lain down choices that determined the fate of their folk. The allied alphas formed a circle around her, faces set with the tension of the day's discoveries—the extent of Draven's army, the unearthly make of his forces, and the unnerving element that their first attack had been more probing than full assault. It was, however, Kale's development that had put them off the most.He sat to the right of her, as he tended to, but the gaze of every other alpha's eyes inevitably tracked to him. The fire, as before, no longer glowed visibly beneath his skin, but the warmth persisted, as well as the subtle offness to his scent that sent every wolf's hackles up. Magnus Ironfoot had been scowling since his arrival, his scarred face distorted in something like sus

The battle's aftermath felt stranger than the battle itself. Where Draven's disciples had died, ash and the pungent scent of burnt nightmares lingered. The grove defenders moved through the injured in silent proficiency, but Aria sensed under the trained strokes the strain which existed. They had weathered the initial attack, but they were well aware it had been but a test of defenses.Draven himself disappeared as quickly as he came, back into the trees after that terrible staring contest at Kale. His words lingered in the morning air like a curse: *I've been looking for you for so very long.*Aria kneeled next to new scout young Tomás, whose side was torn across by claws that looked almost like acid. The cut was clean but deep, and she could see the fear in his eyes when she treated the injured tissue with herbs."Will I be alright, Luna?" he queried, little more than a whisper."It'll be okay," she reassured him, allowing magic from Luna to flow

Invasion was heralded with the first pale light of morning, when mist yet clung about the grove like ghostly sentries that would not quit their charge. Aria was early-risen, wandering about the peripheries with tense vigor that testified to sleepless vigil and accumulating fears. Enemy scouts, after being spotted, had retired within the forest’s amicable shade, but the warning was enough in plain text: the rapture of waiting was nigh its end.She crouched upon the twisted watchtower that perched upon the highest point of the grove, sharp senses stiff against the predawn darkness. The camp below her seethed with the schooled enthusiasm of warriors on the eve of battle. The oil-smeared steel and pine resin smoke merged with the acrid flavor of fear-sweat, its aroma filling her nostrils with the flavor of war’s concord."Malamatash movement in the easter
