Chapter 2

Author: Glutinous Yellow
It was already 1:00 am by the time I returned to my rental apartment.

I sat on a folding chair with the unwrapped lingerie set, a needle, thread, and tweezers spread across the table.

I picked up the needle and thread and sewed the camera into the space between the padded cups and the lace.

After finishing the last stitch, I held the lingerie up to the light and inspected it. It looked untouched.

I folded the lingerie, placed it back in the gift box, and tied the satin ribbon into a bow. Then I looked up at the framed photo on the wall.

Scarlett was grinning from ear to ear in it, holding up peace signs with both hands as she leaned against my shoulder.

Back then, we had to squeeze into a basement apartment near our college. She used to tell me that as long as I was with her, even instant noodles tasted sweet.

I reached out, took the photo off the wall, and flipped it over. A folded bank statement was taped to the back, hidden beneath a strip of tape.

It documented all illicit transactions Zachary had made through Scarlett's account to offshore shell companies over the past six months. I stuffed the bank statement back in and laid the photo facedown on the table.

Then I picked up my phone and sent Sabrina an encrypted text message. "The bait is set. I'll deliver it tomorrow."

Three seconds later, she replied with a single word.

"Attaboy."

…

Early the next morning, I took the gift box to the office. Zachary's office was on the 26th floor, and his driver and right-hand man, Christopher Wright, was stationed outside the door year-round.

When I knocked on the door, Christopher sized me up before jerking his chin toward the office. "Mr. Trent is busy right now, so you'll have to wait for a while."

I stood in the hallway for 20 minutes. The door swung open, and Scarlett strutted out in her high heels. Her lipstick was smudged.

When she spotted me, she didn't bother to cover up, either. She simply wiped the corner of her lips with the back of her hand. "Well, aren't you early?"

She accepted the gift box, unboxed it, and took a quick look before nodding. "Nice color. Mr. Trent will like it."

A metallic tang rose in my throat, but I forced myself to swallow it down. "In that case, I'll head inside and deliver my report."

Zachary was reclining in his executive chair, his shirt collar hanging wide open. Two used glasses and a plate of half-eaten cherries sat on the desk. He didn't invite me to sit, so I stood before him.

"How long have you been following up on the final payment for the southern city's redevelopment project?"

"Six months, Mr. Trent."

He picked at his teeth and answered without even lifting his gaze. "In that case, you don't need to follow up on that project anymore. Hand it over to Scarlett. She'll get the commission on the final payment, too."

I'd spent half a year wining and dining clients, drinking through more than 50 dinners to secure that final payment. The commission alone was worth almost 80 grand.

"Mr. Trent, what about my commission—"

At last, he looked up at me. "Your commission? James, you need to look at the bigger picture. If you spend all your time obsessing over your own little patch of ground, how are you ever going to make something of yourself?"

He slapped the desk. "Young man, keep your eyes on the horizon. I won't treat you unfairly."

My hands balled into fists at my sides. "You're absolutely right, Mr. Trent. I've been too narrow-minded."

After emerging from his office, I chugged three glasses of water in the pantry.

Scarlett followed me in and leaned against the water dispenser with her arms crossed over her chest. Tears welled up in her eyes. "James, are you mad at me?"

"No."

She tugged at my sleeve. "Cheer up. I'm entertaining Mr. Trent for our future. Once I've established myself in the company, he's promised to promote you to assistant manager. Then we can buy a house, get married, and set ourselves up for life in one go!"

When she uttered the words "for our future", her lips still carried the smell of Zachary's cigarettes.

I looked into her eyes.

"Scarlett." I took her hand, and my Adam's apple bobbed. "It's my fault. I'm sorry for putting you through so much."

Her eyes misted over, and she reached out to pat my cheek. "So long as you know that. From now on, don't talk back to Mr. Trent. Just do as you're told."

The moment she turned around, I withdrew my hand from her coat pocket. Her work phone was now unlocked, and a mirroring app was running silently in the background.

I watched her hips sway as she walked into Zachary's office. Then the door closed behind her.

I pulled out my phone and sent Sabrina six words. "The fish has taken the bait."

Ten seconds later, she replied. "11:00 pm, our usual spot."

Scarlett froze. "James, you—" I cut her off. "Mom ended up in the clinic because of you, yet you're still wearing a fake baby bump to deceive a 60-year-old woman. Do you have no conscience?" "I wasn't lying! I just wanted her to know that you abandoned—" "Shut the fuck up!" I took out my phone and pulled up a document. "Between the online loans and personal loans in your name, plus the cash advances you took out on credit cards using my ID, you owe a total of 876,300 dollars. "I've already hired a lawyer to dispute and freeze all the loans taken out using my identity. The bank has opened an investigation into the credit cards you obtained with forged signatures. Not a single cent of this debt will land on my shoulders. It all stays under your name." Scarlett blanched. "876 grand? That's impossible! I didn't borrow that much! The interest... It must've snowballed because of the interest..."I sneered. "When you were spending my money at nightclubs, why didn't you calculate th

Three days after the books were handed over, the FBI reopened its investigation into Zachary's case. The charges against him continued to pile up. Zachary went from being questioned as part of the investigation to being formally arrested and taken into custody. His legal team's request for bail was denied. On the fourth day, Sabrina took me to the detention center. The interrogation room was separated by a pane of glass. Zachary sat on the other side, his hair disheveled and stubble covering his jaw. His eyes were sunken. The moment he saw Sabrina, he leaned forward and braced his hands on the table. "Sabrina... you're my wife... We're married... You can't do this to me..." Sabrina leaned back in her chair and looked at him. "Married, you say?" Sabrina pulled out a divorce agreement demanding that Zachary surrender all his assets and pay compensation, pressing it against the glass. Zachary's eyes widened. "12 million dollars? Have you lost your mind? Where am I supposed t

I parked my car at the entrance to the alley and walked into the flea market alone. The construction supply store at the end of the alley had its metal roller shutter pulled down. The sound of chips clacking came from inside. I slipped inside. Four men were gathered around a table, gambling. The heavyset man seated at the head of the table had a scar on his face. He was none other than Zachary's cousin, Gabriel Scott. He looked up at me with a cigarette dangling from his lips. "Who the hell are you?""Mr. Trent sent me to pick something up." Gabriel's eyes shifted as he exchanged a look with the men beside him. Two thugs stood up and blocked my path.Gabriel blew out a ring of smoke and sized me up. "Didn't you hear? Mr. Trent's been arrested. Are you a cop, or did Zachary's wife send you?" "Neither. I'm James. I took over Zachary's position." Gabriel let out a derisive chuckle. "So you're the guy whose chick Zachary stole."The men beside him burst out laughing. I di

The security guards closed the door, and silence returned to the hallway. Sabrina wiped her fingers with a handkerchief and tossed it into the trash. "James," she called out, leaning against the desk and looking at me. "Zachary's position is vacant now. The company can't go a single day without someone in charge." Right after saying that, she pulled an envelope out of her bag and handed it to me. I opened it and found an official appointment letter naming me Deputy CEO of Ruth Construction Engineering Group, complete with the company's seal and all the necessary signatures. "As of today, Zachary's office, his authority, and his client connections are all yours." Sabrina gazed at me.I folded the appointment letter and slipped it into my inner pocket. By the time I left the dressing room, the news had already spread. The managers and team leaders all kept their heads down at their cubicles. I pushed open the office door. The ashtray and cups were still sitting on the desk.

Silence settled over the dressing room.Zachary slumped on the floor, his lips quivering. "W-What did you just say?"Without sparing him a glance, Sabrina turned her head and wiped the wine stain from the corner of my lips with her thumb. "You've spent half a year playing his obedient little lapdog. Thanks for all your hard work." Zachary scrambled to his feet, pointing at me with his trembling hand. "James Harrison, you son of a bitch! How dare you—"I let go of Sabrina and turned around to face him. "Let's get one thing straight, Mr. Trent. I didn't seek out your wife—she chose me to go undercover and planted me in your company as her mole."I shifted my attention to Scarlett, who was cowering in the corner. "I deliberately sent her to your bed. When you were having the time of your life, did you ever stop to think about the price you'd have to pay?" Zachary gulped hard, his eyes bloodshot. "T-That's impossible! Scarlett came on to me… She was the one who threw herself at me!

I pretended to hesitate. "Mr. Trent..." "Stop stalling." He tapped the utility knife with his finger. "Even if you don't sign it, your signature is still on those invoices. Do you think I'll put in a good word for you when the FBI comes after you? You're expendable. If I were you, I'd spend a few years behind bars in exchange for your family's safety."As soon as his words fell, Scarlett dropped to her knees in front of me. She wrapped her arms around my legs and bawled her eyes out until her makeup was running and her face was a mess of tears and snot. "James, I'm begging you, you have to save Mr. Trent!"Scarlett slammed her forehead onto the concrete floor with a dull thud. "I... I'm pregnant with Mr. Trent's child! You can't let this child lose his father before he's even born!" Zachary cocked his brow before curling his lips. Scarlett cried even louder. "Think about it, James. I've been with you for seven years. Have I ever asked you for anything? Please help me out just
