Chapter 3

Author: Glutinous Yellow
Our usual spot was my rental apartment, which cost 1,200 dollars a month. At 11:00 pm on the dot, a black van pulled up downstairs.

Sabrina wore a beige trench coat, her sunglasses sitting low on her nose, and climbed the six flights of stairs to my apartment in her high heels. There was no elevator.

Her brows drew together when she crossed the threshold, taking in the mildewed walls and rusted pipes. "It's been half a year, and you're still living in a place like this?"

"I've given her my payroll card. Where else can I live?"

Without another word, she walked straight to my computer, sat down, and adeptly pulled up the mirrored data from Scarlett's phone. As she looked at the screen, her expression darkened.

There were chat histories, bank transfer screenshots, and offshore accounts that Zachary had opened under Scarlett's identity.

"These are enough." Sabrina closed my laptop and spun the chair around to face me.

Only a single table lamp was on in the living room. Sitting in the shadows, she looked at me. "James, do you hate him?"

"With a passion."

"To what extent?"

"Enough to stomach all this degradation for half a year."

Sabrina stared at me for what felt like an eternity, then rose from her seat and closed the distance between us. Her fingertips trailed down from my collar and came to a rest at my collarbone.

"Hang in there for a few more days. Give it a week, tops, and his entire fraudulent invoicing operation on the southern city's redevelopment project will come to light. When that time comes, the FBI will step in."

Her fingernail left a red mark on my skin. "However, I need you to do one last thing."

"What is it?"

"He'll definitely look for a scapegoat, and you're his best option. He'll force you to sign a confession. I want you to let him force your hand. Make sure all the evidence is captured and preserved at that exact moment."

"And then?"

"Then I'll lead my men in, kick down the door, and catch him red-handed."

I fell silent for a few seconds. "What if he pulls a knife on me?"

Sabrina lowered her head and chuckled. Then she pulled a metal box from her trench coat pocket and opened it. It contained a tracking chip and a communications earpiece.

"Do you honestly think I'd let my own man go in there as cannon fodder?" She slipped the earpiece into my ear and pinched my earlobe. "James, if you die at his hands, where am I going to find another weapon as useful as you?"

…

Three days later, IRS agents suddenly raided the company and seized all the hard drives in the finance department.

That same day, the FBI's White-Collar Crime Division sent Zachary a formal notice requesting his assistance with their investigation.

The amount involved totaled a staggering 17 million dollars. The charges included fraudulent tax filings and tax evasion.

Zachary locked himself in his office for an entire day with the curtains drawn.

At 6:00 pm, Christopher sought me out. "Mr. Trent wants to see you."

I followed him into the elevator.

When we reached the 26th floor, he turned a corner and led me into a dressing room behind the executive office. The room was small and windowless, with nothing but a single ceiling light.

Zachary sat on a folding chair, his tie askew and his eyes bloodshot. Scarlett stood behind him, clutching a document.

"Close the door," Zachary rasped out. Christopher locked the door behind me.

Zachary gazed at me before pulling out a silver utility knife from his pocket. With a sharp click, he flicked the blade out and slammed it onto the table in front of him.

"James, you've been working under me for three years, so you're practically family. Now that the company's in a tight spot, I need someone to step up and take the fall. You're the project lead, and you handled all the sign-offs and final inspections.

"I want you to go to the FBI and tell them you acted alone and that the company had nothing to do with it."

He pointed at the document in Scarlett's hands. "I've already drafted your confession. You'll be sentenced to three to five years at most. Once you're released, I'll give you a million dollars to get back on your feet. Then, you'll never have to worry about money for the rest of your life."

He'd stolen 17 million dollars, and he thought he could buy someone's life with a million dollars.

I looked at the confession. My name—James Harrison—was already printed in the signature field, with spaces marked for the date and my fingerprint beside it.

Scarlett froze. "James, you—" I cut her off. "Mom ended up in the clinic because of you, yet you're still wearing a fake baby bump to deceive a 60-year-old woman. Do you have no conscience?" "I wasn't lying! I just wanted her to know that you abandoned—" "Shut the fuck up!" I took out my phone and pulled up a document. "Between the online loans and personal loans in your name, plus the cash advances you took out on credit cards using my ID, you owe a total of 876,300 dollars. "I've already hired a lawyer to dispute and freeze all the loans taken out using my identity. The bank has opened an investigation into the credit cards you obtained with forged signatures. Not a single cent of this debt will land on my shoulders. It all stays under your name." Scarlett blanched. "876 grand? That's impossible! I didn't borrow that much! The interest... It must've snowballed because of the interest..."I sneered. "When you were spending my money at nightclubs, why didn't you calculate th

Three days after the books were handed over, the FBI reopened its investigation into Zachary's case. The charges against him continued to pile up. Zachary went from being questioned as part of the investigation to being formally arrested and taken into custody. His legal team's request for bail was denied. On the fourth day, Sabrina took me to the detention center. The interrogation room was separated by a pane of glass. Zachary sat on the other side, his hair disheveled and stubble covering his jaw. His eyes were sunken. The moment he saw Sabrina, he leaned forward and braced his hands on the table. "Sabrina... you're my wife... We're married... You can't do this to me..." Sabrina leaned back in her chair and looked at him. "Married, you say?" Sabrina pulled out a divorce agreement demanding that Zachary surrender all his assets and pay compensation, pressing it against the glass. Zachary's eyes widened. "12 million dollars? Have you lost your mind? Where am I supposed t

I parked my car at the entrance to the alley and walked into the flea market alone. The construction supply store at the end of the alley had its metal roller shutter pulled down. The sound of chips clacking came from inside. I slipped inside. Four men were gathered around a table, gambling. The heavyset man seated at the head of the table had a scar on his face. He was none other than Zachary's cousin, Gabriel Scott. He looked up at me with a cigarette dangling from his lips. "Who the hell are you?""Mr. Trent sent me to pick something up." Gabriel's eyes shifted as he exchanged a look with the men beside him. Two thugs stood up and blocked my path.Gabriel blew out a ring of smoke and sized me up. "Didn't you hear? Mr. Trent's been arrested. Are you a cop, or did Zachary's wife send you?" "Neither. I'm James. I took over Zachary's position." Gabriel let out a derisive chuckle. "So you're the guy whose chick Zachary stole."The men beside him burst out laughing. I di

The security guards closed the door, and silence returned to the hallway. Sabrina wiped her fingers with a handkerchief and tossed it into the trash. "James," she called out, leaning against the desk and looking at me. "Zachary's position is vacant now. The company can't go a single day without someone in charge." Right after saying that, she pulled an envelope out of her bag and handed it to me. I opened it and found an official appointment letter naming me Deputy CEO of Ruth Construction Engineering Group, complete with the company's seal and all the necessary signatures. "As of today, Zachary's office, his authority, and his client connections are all yours." Sabrina gazed at me.I folded the appointment letter and slipped it into my inner pocket. By the time I left the dressing room, the news had already spread. The managers and team leaders all kept their heads down at their cubicles. I pushed open the office door. The ashtray and cups were still sitting on the desk.

Silence settled over the dressing room.Zachary slumped on the floor, his lips quivering. "W-What did you just say?"Without sparing him a glance, Sabrina turned her head and wiped the wine stain from the corner of my lips with her thumb. "You've spent half a year playing his obedient little lapdog. Thanks for all your hard work." Zachary scrambled to his feet, pointing at me with his trembling hand. "James Harrison, you son of a bitch! How dare you—"I let go of Sabrina and turned around to face him. "Let's get one thing straight, Mr. Trent. I didn't seek out your wife—she chose me to go undercover and planted me in your company as her mole."I shifted my attention to Scarlett, who was cowering in the corner. "I deliberately sent her to your bed. When you were having the time of your life, did you ever stop to think about the price you'd have to pay?" Zachary gulped hard, his eyes bloodshot. "T-That's impossible! Scarlett came on to me… She was the one who threw herself at me!

I pretended to hesitate. "Mr. Trent..." "Stop stalling." He tapped the utility knife with his finger. "Even if you don't sign it, your signature is still on those invoices. Do you think I'll put in a good word for you when the FBI comes after you? You're expendable. If I were you, I'd spend a few years behind bars in exchange for your family's safety."As soon as his words fell, Scarlett dropped to her knees in front of me. She wrapped her arms around my legs and bawled her eyes out until her makeup was running and her face was a mess of tears and snot. "James, I'm begging you, you have to save Mr. Trent!"Scarlett slammed her forehead onto the concrete floor with a dull thud. "I... I'm pregnant with Mr. Trent's child! You can't let this child lose his father before he's even born!" Zachary cocked his brow before curling his lips. Scarlett cried even louder. "Think about it, James. I've been with you for seven years. Have I ever asked you for anything? Please help me out just
