Chapter 2

Author: Reckless Breeze
Luna's POV

I crawled to my feet and silently patted the dirt from my clothes. My eyes were stinging terribly, but I did everything that I could to hold back my tears, not daring to let them fall.

Mom once told me that I was incredibly irritating and looked hideous when I cried. She already had a hard time hearing my voice. I didn't want to give her the impression that I was an annoying crybaby.

I only made it to school after walking for over an hour. When school ended, I stuck close behind Stella the whole time because I was scared Mom would leave me behind again.

On the way home, Mom gently asked Stella how her day was in school. Eventually, Stella got bored of describing her day. She turned her head away and stopped responding to Mom.

My eyes lit up. I carefully said, "My teacher praised me today, Mom. I also received a certificate for being a model student."

But Mom's ears seemed to stop working again. My voice was the only one in the car

In the end, Stella snapped, "Shut up, Luna! You're being so annoying!"

Only then did Mom speak again. "Be quiet, Luna. Don't bother your sister."

I blinked, feeling stunned. Was Mom's hearing working again? I wondered if she heard what I told her earlier.

I was just about to ask her when I remembered that she had just told me to be quiet. I immediately zipped my mouth shut.

I basked in happiness the entire car ride because Mom had finally spoken to me. But when we made it back home, I seemed to become invisible again.

Mom didn't call me for dinner, for bedtime stories, or for any of the time we usually spent together. For three days, she ignored every word I said, refusing to speak to me unless she had to.

I finally realized what the problem was when Stella walked in and pouted at the three drops of oil on her carpet.

I didn't sleep that night as I searched online for different ways to clean the carpet. Finally, I managed to clean the oil stains.

The next day, I had dark bags under my eyes. I ran up to Mom, excited, and exclaimed, "I've cleaned the oil stains on Stella's carpet, Mom."

Mom finally responded this time. She looked at the clean carpet, raised her hand, and ruffled my hair. She finally smiled and said, "You're amazing, Luna."

I looked up proudly. The exhaustion from lack of sleep seemed to disappear in that moment.

…

Fear surged back the moment my thoughts returned to the present. Last time, three drops of oil on the carpet meant three days of silence. Now that I'd spat an entire mouthful of blood onto it, was Mom going to ignore me for the rest of my life?

Panic gripped my heart at the thought, and my body felt even worse as the terror spiked. In the end, I couldn't even wipe the blood off the carpet before I retched up another mouthful, this time mixed with something dark and filthy.

At that point, it was impossible to clean the carpet.

I was frozen to the spot, feeling cold all over. Shockingly, the chilly sensation even overpowered the pain in an instant.

Luna's POVMom's smile stiffened when I subconsciously floated backward. She sounded a little choked up when she said, "I'm sorry, Luna. I'm so sorry. Please don't hate me."I didn't say a single word."I've learned my lesson, Luna," Mom said in a panic. "I'll never pretend to be deaf again. I let you down in this life. Please be my daughter again in your next life. I promise that I'll always listen to you. Alright?"I didn't know what to say or how to answer her. I didn't want to upset her, but I also didn't want to be her daughter again in my next life.Truth be told, it had been incredibly upsetting whenever I was ignored. When I was younger, I had even thought that I would be better off as an orphan. I wouldn't yearn for Mom's love if I was an orphan. I also wouldn't get upset over her hearing that would occasionally stop working. However, I would think that I was being utterly heartless whenever she cared for me or suddenly showed me her gentle side. She was already going th

Luna's POVI felt a little dazed as I stared at the man who looked a little like me. From the moment I understood what was going on, I knew that Mom hated Dad with every fiber of her being. She hated him so much that she still cursed him out whenever she got drunk, even though they had been divorced for over a decade.I didn't want to upset Mom, so I never asked her anything about Dad. I never would have guessed that I would see him for the first time at my funeral.Mom lost it the moment she saw Dad. She snatched up a shovel and swung it at his head, screaming, "How dare you show your face here, George Woodson? Leave. Leave right now! Don't disturb Luna's rest."Dad's eyes were bloodshot, but they also burned with anger. "Your emotions were so sensitive when you were pregnant with Luna, Laura. You insisted that I had cheated on you, and refused to believe me no matter how I tried to explain myself. You even used Luna to threaten me into agreeing to a divorce."I agreed because I

Luna's POV"Happy birthday, Luna! Mom granted Stella's wish on her birthday. I have a birthday wish too. I want Mom to give me a kiss, but I don't think that she heard me."Happy birthday, Luna! Stella secretly gave me candy today. It was so sweet! I'm going to earn a lot of money when I grow up and buy Stella all the tastiest candy."Happy birthday, Luna! My stomach hurt a lot, too. But Mom and Stella are away on a trip. What should I do? Am I going to die? Will Mom and Stella be sad if I died?"Happy birthday, Luna! I earned 5 dollars and 30 cents today after selling the bottles and scrap that I collected for three months."Stay strong, Luna! You'll earn enough money soon. I'm going to buy Mom a hearing aid so her hearing gets better. I'm also going to buy Stella a pair of earrings from the store. The other female students in her class have them. Stella needs to have them too."My neat handwriting suddenly turned wonky on the last entry. The page was also stained with dried blo

  • Cured Mom's Selective Hearing With My Life   Chapter 8

Luna's POVMom was numbly making breakfast in the kitchen.Stella hesitated for a long time before returning to her room and pulling out a pink dress. I recognized that dress. She had to save her New Year money for three years before she was finally able to afford it.Stella stood in front of the mirror after she put it on for the first time. She really looked like the princesses on television.I felt incredibly envious and kept stealing glances at her. When Stella noticed what I was doing, she let out a haughty scoff and said, "Stop looking, Luna. You won't become a princess even if you put this on with that shriveled body of yours. You'll just look like an ugly duckling at most."I foolishly smiled and said, "You're right. You're the most beautiful princess, Stella."Stella scoffed again, but she stopped saying mean things to me.That night, I found a bowl of cherries in my room. I picked up the bowl and washed them before putting one in my mouth. The sweet taste tasted as

Luna's POVMom was always spending time with Stella, taking her out to play and going on trips with her. Even when she was at home, she spent most of her time in Stella's room.I felt incredibly envious as I watched them, so when it was my birthday, I asked Mom, "Can you sleep with me tonight, Mom? I want to hear you sing a lullaby too. I want you to lull me to sleep just like how you lull Stella to sleep. Is that okay? I've never heard you sing a lullaby for me even though I'm grown up now."Mom was knitting a scarf for Stella at the time. She didn't react at all to my words. I thought that her hearing wasn't working again, so I raised my voice and repeated my requests several times.Mom finally opened her mouth after I repeated myself for the third time. She stared at me with confusion as I looked at her with anticipation welling up in my chest, asking, "What did you say, Luna? My hearing isn't very good. I didn't hear you."I was just about to repeat myself when Stella made a s

Luna's POVMom couldn't say a single word. Both her lips and her hands were trembling. A long time passed before she finally forced a smile on her face, asking, "Are you angry at me for not taking you out, Luna? Is that why you're playing a prank on me?"Silence descended upon the room.My body had turned cold and stiff a long time ago. My chest lay flat and showed no signs of movement.Panic began to color Mom's tone. There was even a hint of pleading mixed in. "I want to apologize to you, Luna. I wronged you in the past. Don't scare me, okay?"Mom finally lost it when I still didn't respond. She hugged my body and let out a loud wail. "Luna! Open your eyes and look at me, Luna…"Stella had jolted awake from the noise. She impatiently ran to my room and snapped, "It's the middle of the night, Mom. Why are you being so noisy?"She noticed my stiff body as Mom was clutching me to her chest the next second. She subconsciously retreated a couple of steps before snapping to her sens
