Chapter 3

Author: Mohini
Cameron's POV

I stood there in a daze, my vision going black around the edges. The marriage certificate I had kept carefully tucked away in my bag all this time had been fake.

Even now, I could still remember how she had cried like a little kid, overwhelmed with happiness, when she proposed to me.

And yet she had given the three most important things in a person's life—our son, our wedding, and our marriage—to Thomas.

The pedestrians on the street outside began to blur and warp before my eyes. Unable to hold myself up any longer, I passed out.

When I opened my eyes again, upbeat music was drifting up from downstairs. Still groggy, I forced myself to get up.

The house was packed with guests, celebrating Noah's third birthday.

April and Thomas stood together, holding Noah between them, posing for photos like a real family of three.

When the guests saw me stumble down the stairs looking completely disheveled, whispers broke out around the room.

"He hasn't been a father to that child for even a single day, and he still has the nerve to show up to his birthday party?"

"He ruined a perfectly good family. Who knows? He'll probably have another episode later. What if he hurts someone?"

Hearing them, April glanced over at me, her expression complicated.

"Cameron, you just woke up, and you're still weak. Go back upstairs. Come back down when the party's over."

Thomas came over to persuade me as well.

"If Noah starts crying again, you might have another episode. We're only watching out for you."

As he stepped closer, I noticed the heirloom ring on his finger—the one reserved especially for the Carter family's son-in-law.

April had once put that ring on my finger. But later, she told me she was afraid I might scratch myself with it during one of my episodes, so she took it back for safekeeping.

As it turned out, it had been on Thomas' finger the whole time.

Tears welled up in my eyes, but when I spoke, my voice was utterly calm.

"The two of you got married a long time ago, didn't you?"

Thomas froze for a moment before reaching for my hand, trying to explain.

"Cameron, we did all this because we were trying to—"

I smacked his hand away, hard. To my surprise, he fell backward without warning.

"Cameron Getz!" April shrieked.

She pulled Thomas into her arms before turning to look at me with pure disgust.

"You've completely lost your mind, Cameron!"

There wasn't the slightest trace of guilt in her eyes for deceiving me. No, there was nothing but heartache for the man in her arms.

Cradling his scraped knee, Thomas shook his head weakly.

"I was the one who decided to throw a birthday party for Noah. It's only natural for him to blame me. Haven't we all gotten used to him acting like this by now?"

As he spoke, he casually exposed his arms, causing the crowd around us to gasp in shock.

His arms were covered in ugly purple and blue bruises.

One glance was enough for April's heartache to show plainly on her face. When she looked at me again, all I saw was disappointment.

"Thomas has given you his absolute all. He's always tried to protect you whenever you try to kill yourself. And this is how you repay him?"

How could those pathetic-looking bruises compare to the five years I had spent being lied to? How could they compare to the three years I had spent trapped in agonizing illness?

"I didn't touch him!" I practically roared.

The next second, April lunged forward, grabbed my wrist, and dragged me back to the bedroom.

"Isn't ruining my whole life enough for you? Can't you just let us have a moment of peace?"

The words had just barely left her mouth when I heard the door being locked shut.

My claustrophobia immediately kicked in. I pounded on the door desperately, screaming until my throat was raw.

"April, we're done!"

Her footsteps paused outside for three seconds, followed by a cold scoff.

"It's always either a suicide attempt or a divorce threat from you. Are you really not tired of playing these games yet?"

I slowly slid down to the floor. "I mean it this time."

"Mr. Balfour collapsed! He was saying that his head was hurting earlier!"

My words were drowned out by the shouting from downstairs.

April's hurried footsteps gradually faded into the distance.

Meanwhile, my breathing grew weaker and weaker.

Just when I thought it was all over, the smartwatch on my wrist—the one linked to Noah—suddenly began blaring an alarm.

Cameron's POVDuring my time at the rehabilitation center, my mood gradually became better. I made crafts with other patients, and we sat around bonfires, singing and dancing together.Slowly, I came to understand that committing suicide wasn't the answer to my problems. The answer was to find a new path forward, even if that meant just changing one's surroundings. When April tracked me down again, she was carrying bags of gifts in both hands."Cameron, I don't mind you living here, but please don't make me leave. I just want to spend time with you. And I hear a child's cries coming from the pool every single day. I'm going out of my mind."Only then did I notice the dark circles beneath her eyes. She even had antidepressants poking out of her pocket. But by then, I couldn't bring myself to pity her anymore."You brought this on yourself."April stiffened, then picked up the paper crane on the desk."I used to fold paper cranes with you, too. That was the only time you'd ever

I can't lose you too…"At the mention of our son, tears slipped from the corners of my eyes. I had watched him take his last breath—watched him stop struggling—right in front of me. And I had been powerless to do anything. As his mother, April was indirectly responsible for his death, too.She wiped her tears as she continued to ramble on, "I had no idea Thomas was such a person. I did indeed have feelings for him five years ago, but that was then. I finally understand now that you're the person I love most. I never thought of you as a burden…"I had no interest in listening to any of that anymore. Still out of it, I drifted back to sleep. When I woke up again, Lucas was standing beside my bed."Cameron," he sobbed uncontrollably. "

"After Mr. Balfour took Noah away, I never saw him again. I wanted to take him out to play just now, so I searched the whole house. I… I finally found him here…"At those words, April's bloodshot eyes fell on Thomas."It was you? It really was you?"She recalled how Cameron had so desperately tried to get to the backyard, screaming that he needed to find Noah.As it turned out, he hadn't been crazy at all.Thomas immediately denied it. "It wasn't me! He might have wandered into the pool on his own. I honestly don't know what happened."April didn't waste another word and ran straight to pull up the surveillance footage.Thomas moved to stop her, but Lucas stepped in front of him."Thomas, I can't bring myself to trust you anymore either."When the surveillance footage st

Third-Person POVCameron was lying in bed, his face deathly pale, the blood at the corner of his mouth already dried."Cameron!"April rushed to his side, her fingers trembling uncontrollably. "How could this happen?"Before she could process what was happening—and just as she reached for her phone to call 911—Lucas walked in."How much longer are you going to keep falling for his tricks? The lunatic has been playing you for a fool. Have you ever stopped to think about Thomas? He's the one who's been pushed past his breaking point!"April froze with her phone in her hand and looked at the man on the bed."He's faking it?""What else?" Lucas said with a scoff. He yanked the covers off Cameron and shoved him hard. "Get up! Can you stop with the act already? Haven't April and Thomas suffered enough because of you? Can't you be reasonable for once?"The next second, April shoved him back hard."Why are you saying all that to him?"She stepped closer to him, her voice turning co

Cameron's POVWhen I finally managed to break the door down, I found April in one of the guest bedrooms downstairs, taking care of a barely conscious Thomas. The moment her gaze landed on me, the corner of her mouth twitched into a subtle smirk. It was as if she were convinced that I was somehow admitting my mistake and regretting my decision to end things earlier. But she was about to be disappointed.I walked right past her and headed straight for Thomas."Where's my son?" I asked, my voice trembling.A flicker of guilt crossed his eyes."Why are you asking? He's asleep with the nanny."April stepped in front of him protectively, her eyes filled with impatience."You already made Thomas so mad that he fainted, and now you're trying to stir up more trouble? Can you stop with the act? When have you ever cared so much about Noah?"I froze, unable to believe those words had come out of her mouth. But I had no time to argue with her. The alarm on my watch was blaring nonstop, an
