Strategic Moves

Chloe's POV

I spent the next two days proving myself.

I attended court sessions, listening to disputes and offering insights. I trained with Theron in the gardens, honing my lunar channel. I even helped Sera organize the household staff.

Slowly, grudgingly, the court began to respect me.

On the third day, a crisis emerged. Two noble houses, House Nightshade and House Thornwood, were on the brink of war over a territorial dispute that had been simmering for months.

Theron called an emergency council meeting.

"This is unacceptable," he said, his voice hard. "We're already weakened by the curse. We can't afford internal conflict."

"House Nightshade has encroached on our lands," Lord Thornwood said, his face red with anger. "They've built settlements on territory that's been ours for generations."

"The territory was unclaimed," Lady Nightshade countered. "Abandoned after the curse took your people. We simply filled the void."

"You stole it!"

"We claimed it!"

The argument escalated, voices rising. Theron's jaw tightened, and I could see his frustration mounting.

I stood. "May I speak?"

The room fell silent. All eyes turned to me.

"You may," Theron said.

I took a breath. "The territory in question, it borders the Moonlit River, correct?"

Both nobles nodded.

"And the river provides water for both your lands."

"Yes," Lord Thornwood said warily.

"Then the solution is simple." I looked between them. "Share it. Divide the territory equally, with the river as the boundary. Both houses get access to water. Both houses get land. No one loses."

"That's..." Lady Nightshade started.

"Fair," I finished. "It's fair. And fairness is what this court needs right now. Unity, not division."

Lord Thornwood frowned. "And if we refuse?"

"Then you're putting your pride above your people," I said bluntly. "And that makes you unworthy of leadership."

Shocked silence.

Then, slowly, Lady Nightshade nodded. "She's right. I accept the compromise."

Lord Thornwood looked like he wanted to argue, but finally, he nodded too. "Agreed."

Relief swept through the room.

Theron stood, his eyes on me. "Well done."

The pride in his voice made my heart soar.

After the meeting, Theron pulled me aside. "That was brilliant."

"It was obvious," I said, though I was pleased.

"Not to them." He kissed my forehead. "You have a gift for seeing solutions others miss. The court is starting to see it too."

"Good." I smiled. "Maybe now they'll stop whispering about me."

"Oh, they'll still whisper." Theron's smile was wicked. "But now they'll whisper about how impressive you are."

That night, we celebrated. Theron took me to his private dining room, where a feast was laid out: wine, roasted meat, fresh bread, and desserts that made my mouth water.

"This is too much," I said.

"Nothing is too much for you." Theron pulled out my chair. "Sit. Eat. Enjoy."

We ate and talked, the conversation flowing easily. I found myself laughing more than I had in years.

"I like this," I said. "Just being with you. No ritual. No curse. Just us."

"Me too." Theron reached across the table, taking my hand. "I wish it could always be like this."

"It will be. Once the curse is broken."

"And after?" His thumb traced circles on my palm. "What happens after?"

I met his gaze. "I don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead."

"I have." His voice was soft. "I've thought about it constantly. About what our life could be. Together."

My heart stuttered. "Theron..."

"I know you need time," he said quickly. "I'm not pushing. I just want you to know. I'm not just doing this for the curse. I'm doing it for us."

The sincerity in his eyes undid me.

"I know," I whispered. "I feel it too."

Relief flooded his expression. "You do?"

"Yes." I squeezed his hand. "I'm scared, Theron. Terrified, actually. But I feel it. This connection between us. It's real."

"It's more than real." He stood, moving around the table to me. "It's everything."

He pulled me to my feet, his hands framing my face. "I'm falling for you, Chloe. Hard and fast and complete."

Tears pricked my eyes. "I'm falling too."

He kissed me, and it was different from before. Softer. Sweeter. Full of emotion rather than just desire.

When we pulled apart, both of us were breathing hard.

"Take me to bed," I whispered. "Not for the ritual. Just for us."

Theron's eyes darkened. "Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything."

Chloe's POVThe next morning, I felt the weight of every gaze.I walked through the Shadow Court with Sera at my side, and everywhere we went, people stared. Whispered."Ignore them," Sera said quietly."Hard to ignore when they're so obvious."We reached the great hall, where Theron was meeting with his advisors. I hesitated at the entrance."You belong here," Sera said. "Remember that."I squared my shoulders and walked in.The conversation stopped the moment I appeared.Theron looked up, his expression softening. "Chloe. Come."I crossed to him, acutely aware of the advisors watching my every move."We were just discussing last night's event," Lord Darius said, his tone neutral."Event?" I repeated."The power surge," Marcus clarified. "It happened behind closed doors, but those of us old enough to remember what this bloodline's magic used to feel like noticed anyway. It moved through the whole keep, faint as it was."Heat crept up my neck."The ritual is progressing well," Theron

Chloe's POVHe came to my room three nights later, and he knocked, which I had not expected."You can come in," I said.He did not, at first. He stood in the doorway with his shoulder against the frame and looked at me for a while."Marcus says the third mark is ready to go," he said. "He says the attunement work has taken us as far as it can. After this it needs the rest of it.""I know what it needs.""I want to hear you say it anyway."I put down the book I had not been reading. "You want to sleep with me.""I want you to decide whether I do." He came in and shut the door. "Those are not the same thing and I would like us to keep them separate for as long as we possibly can.""You have said something like that before.""I will keep saying it." He sat down on the end of the bed, which put him further from me than he needed to be, and I understood that was deliberate. "There is no part of this I am comfortable with. I am asking a woman who has lost everything to give me one more thin

Chloe's POVI gave Theron my answer on the third evening, and I gave it badly, because I had rehearsed it and the rehearsal did not survive contact with his face."I will do it," I said. "With conditions."He had been standing at the window with his back to me. He did not turn around straight away, and when he did, whatever had been on his face was already packed away."Name them.""You do not lie to me. Not to protect me, not to spare me, not because you have decided I have had enough for one week." I kept my voice level with some effort. "If something in your histories says this costs me, you tell me the same day you learn it.""Done.""You did not think about that.""I have been thinking about it for four days." He came away from the window. "What else.""You stop the moment I say stop. Not the moment you agree with my reasons. The moment I say it."Something moved behind his eyes. "That one is harder.""Then it is the one I need most.""Yes," he said. "It is." He was quiet for a m

Chloe's POVI did not give Theron an answer that night, and by morning I had decided I was not going to give him one until I understood what I would be agreeing to.Which is how I ended up in the archive at an hour when only servants and insomniacs are awake, being told no by a man who was too polite to say it."The lower shelves are open to you," Marcus said. "Anything above the second gallery requires the King's word.""He carried me across a border. I assume that counts for something.""It counts for a great deal. It does not count as the King's word." He did not move from where he was standing, which happened to be between me and the stairs. "Lady Chloe. You have been on your feet for a day and a half.""And in that day and a half I have been asked to hand over my body and my blood to a curse nobody will describe to me in plain language." I let that sit. "You keep the histories. I am asking the man who keeps the histories for a history."Something worked behind his face. He was, I

  • Cursed Bonds:The Wolflees Luna's Redemption    Welcome to the Shadow Court

Chloe's POVI woke because someone was arguing about me.Not near me. Below me, somewhere down through the floor, two voices going back and forth in the particular rhythm of people who have been having the same argument for some time and are no longer enjoying it.I lay still with my eyes shut and did what I had been taught to do since I was nine years old, which is find out where you are before anyone knows you are awake.First thing I noticed was the warmth all the way through.Linen against my skin, and good linen. A fire somewhere to my left, well banked. The smell of stone and cold iron and something faintly resinous underneath it.And silence where my wolf had been. That last landed the way it had every morning since the council chamber, sharp and sudden. You do not get used to it. You only get better at not making a sound about it.I opened my eyes.Black stone, vaulted, high enough that the ceiling went into shadow. Tall windows with snow light coming through them. A bed I coul
