The Court's Doubts

Chloe's POV

The next morning, I felt the weight of every gaze.

I walked through the Shadow Court with Sera at my side, and everywhere we went, people stared. Whispered.

"Ignore them," Sera said quietly.

"Hard to ignore when they're so obvious."

We reached the great hall, where Theron was meeting with his advisors. I hesitated at the entrance.

"You belong here," Sera said. "Remember that."

I squared my shoulders and walked in.

The conversation stopped the moment I appeared.

Theron looked up, his expression softening. "Chloe. Come."

I crossed to him, acutely aware of the advisors watching my every move.

"We were just discussing last night's event," Lord Darius said, his tone neutral.

"Event?" I repeated.

"The power surge," Marcus clarified. "It happened behind closed doors, but those of us old enough to remember what this bloodline's magic used to feel like noticed anyway. It moved through the whole keep, faint as it was."

Heat crept up my neck.

"The ritual is progressing well," Theron said firmly. "That's all they need to know."

"With respect, Your Majesty," Kael said, "they need more than that. They need to understand what she is. What she's doing to you."

"She's saving me," Theron said, his voice hard. "That's what she's doing."

"Is she?" Kael's gaze fixed on me. "Or is she binding you to her? Making you dependent?"

My temper flared. "I'm not binding him to anything. The ritual requires both of us. Equal participation."

"Does it?" Kael challenged. "Because from where I stand, you're the one with all the power. You're the one channeling lunar energy. You're the one he can't seem to function without."

"Enough," Theron said, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl.

But Kael wasn't finished. "The court is divided, Your Majesty. Some see her as our salvation. Others see her as a threat. A wolfless Luna with no pack loyalty, no bloodline ties. What's to stop her from using you and leaving?"

"I would never..."

"Wouldn't you?" Kael interrupted. "Your own pack cast you out. Why should we trust you won't do the same to us?"

The words landed like a blow.

Theron was on his feet in an instant, his hand at Kael's throat. "You will not speak to her that way."

"Your Majesty," Darius said carefully. "Kael speaks harshly, but he's not wrong. The court needs reassurance."

Theron released Kael, but his eyes blazed with fury. "What kind of reassurance?"

"A formal bonding," Marcus suggested. "Make her your mate. Officially. That would silence the doubters."

My heart stuttered. "Mate?"

Theron turned to me, his expression unreadable. "It's a political move. A way to legitimize your position."

"Is that all it would be?" I asked quietly. "Political?"

Something flickered in his eyes. "No. It would be more than that."

The advisors exchanged glances.

"We'll discuss this later," Theron said. "Privately."

He took my arm, leading me from the hall. We walked in silence until we reached his chambers.

The moment the door closed, Theron pulled me into his arms.

"I'm sorry," he said. "Kael was out of line."

"He was honest." My voice was small. "They don't trust me."

"They will. In time."

"What if they don't?" I looked up at him. "What if I break the curse and they still see me as an outsider?"

Theron cupped my face. "Then we'll leave. Together. Build our own court. Our own pack."

"You'd do that? Leave everything?"

"For you?" His thumb brushed my cheek. "Yes. Without hesitation."

The declaration stole my breath.

"But it won't come to that," Theron continued. "Because you're going to prove yourself. Not to them, but to yourself. You're going to show them exactly what a wolfless Luna can do."

"How?"

"By being exactly who you are." He kissed me softly. "Strong. Brave. Powerful."

I wanted to believe him. But doubt lingered.

"What about the bonding?" I asked. "The formal mate bond?"

Theron was quiet for a moment. "Do you want that?"

"I don't know." I was being honest. "Everything is happening so fast. A week ago, I was dying in the borderlands. Now I'm here, breaking curses, channeling lunar power, and they want me to become your mate?"

"Only if you want to," Theron said. "I won't force you into anything."

"But it would help. Politically."

"Yes."

I stepped back, needing space to think. "Can I have time? To decide?"

Pain flashed across Theron's face, but he nodded. "Of course. Take all the time you need."

But even as he said it, I could see the hurt in his eyes. And I hated myself for putting it there.

Chloe's POVI spent the next two days proving myself.I attended court sessions, listening to disputes and offering insights. I trained with Theron in the gardens, honing my lunar channel. I even helped Sera organize the household staff.Slowly, grudgingly, the court began to respect me.On the third day, a crisis emerged. Two noble houses, House Nightshade and House Thornwood, were on the brink of war over a territorial dispute that had been simmering for months.Theron called an emergency council meeting."This is unacceptable," he said, his voice hard. "We're already weakened by the curse. We can't afford internal conflict.""House Nightshade has encroached on our lands," Lord Thornwood said, his face red with anger. "They've built settlements on territory that's been ours for generations.""The territory was unclaimed," Lady Nightshade countered. "Abandoned after the curse took your people. We simply filled the void.""You stole it!""We claimed it!"The argument escalated, voices

Chloe's POVHe came to my room three nights later, and he knocked, which I had not expected."You can come in," I said.He did not, at first. He stood in the doorway with his shoulder against the frame and looked at me for a while."Marcus says the third mark is ready to go," he said. "He says the attunement work has taken us as far as it can. After this it needs the rest of it.""I know what it needs.""I want to hear you say it anyway."I put down the book I had not been reading. Chloe's POVI gave Theron my answer on the third evening, and I gave it badly, because I had rehearsed it and the rehearsal did not survive contact with his face."I will do it," I said. "With conditions."He had been standing at the window with his back to me. He did not turn around straight away, and when he did, whatever had been on his face was already packed away."Name them.""You do not lie to me. Not to protect me, not to spare me, not because you have decided I have had enough for one week." I kept my voice level with some effort. He came away from the window. "What else.""You stop the moment I say stop. Not the moment you agree with my reasons. The moment I say it."Something moved behind his eyes. Chloe's POVI did not give Theron an answer that night, and by morning I had decided I was not going to give him one until I understood what I would be agreeing to.Which is how I ended up in the archive at an hour when only servants and insomniacs are awake, being told no by a man who was too polite to say it."The lower shelves are open to you," Marcus said. "Anything above the second gallery requires the King's word.""He carried me across a border. I assume that counts for something.""It counts for a great deal. It does not count as the King's word." You have been on your feet for a day and a half.""And in that day and a half I have been asked to hand over my body and my blood to a curse nobody will describe to me in plain language." I let that sit. "You keep the histories. I am asking the man who keeps the histories for a history."Something worked behind his face. He was, I

  • Cursed Bonds:The Wolflees Luna's Redemption    Welcome to the Shadow Court

Chloe's POVI woke because someone was arguing about me.Not near me. Below me, somewhere down through the floor, two voices going back and forth in the particular rhythm of people who have been having the same argument for some time and are no longer enjoying it.I lay still with my eyes shut and did what I had been taught to do since I was nine years old, which is find out where you are before anyone knows you are awake.First thing I noticed was the warmth all the way through.Linen against my skin, and good linen. A fire somewhere to my left, well banked. The smell of stone and cold iron and something faintly resinous underneath it.And silence where my wolf had been. That last landed the way it had every morning since the council chamber, sharp and sudden. You do not get used to it. You only get better at not making a sound about it.I opened my eyes.Black stone, vaulted, high enough that the ceiling went into shadow. Tall windows with snow light coming through them. A bed I coul
